Excerpt: ...a Union Station could be built for the use of the Eastern and Boston and Lowell Railroads. The new terminus was so small that the locomotives drawing the trains did not enter it at all. About half a mile outside, the engine would be detached and switched off and the cars rolled into the station on their own momentum. This required good judgment and nerve on the part of the train crews, as the slightest miscalculation in applying the brakes might result in the cars crashing through the station into Causeway street. Strange to say, the practice continued for a great many years. The East Boston depot was given up almost entirely / to freight purposes (a few branch passenger trains were From a point a little northerly of the Charlestown State Prison, where the Boston & Maine freight yards now are, was then water and mud flats, which were not filled in until many years later. run for many years to East Boston from Lynn and Revere), and the stock in the East Boston Ferry Company was divided among the stockholders as a stock dividend. In 1854 the legislature of Massachusetts passed a law allowing railroad corporations to fund their floating debts by means of bond issues, and the stockholders of the Eastern Railroad accordingly authorized their directors to-issue bonds to an amount not exceeding 1,500,000.00, bearing six per cent, interest; of this $1,200,000.00 were sold at a rate averaging 83 1-3 per cent. In the meantime the Saugus branch was opened for.travel on February 1, 1853, its eastern terminus being Lynn Common, for its track did not join the main line of the Eastern at West Lynn. At its other end it connected with the Boston and Maine Railroad (main line) at Malden. The only intermediate stations at the beginning were East...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Railroad: A Historical Account of Early Railroading in Eastern New England Hampshire Telegraph of Nov 17, 1832, published at Nashua, N. H., is of interest The ship Choctaw, ' at Boston from Liverpool, has on board another Locomo tive Engine with apparatus complete intended for the Lowell Railroad. She has also brought for the same purpose about 2000 bars of railroad iron. The original sleepers on the Lowell road were of granite, but were soon done away with as they were found to make the track too rigid. At first the stage companies did not anticipate any very serious results from the new competition. A prominent stage proprietor in Providence, R. I., said, shortly before the Opening of the railroad Let the train run off the track when going thirty miles an hour and kill two or three hundred people a few times and people will be ready to stick to the stages. They knitted our expansive nation together and ably transported people, materials, supplies, goods, and mail. Literally hundreds, if not thousands, of railroads were built in the United States during the nineteenth century. Among the more colorful was the New York and New England Railroad, which connected Boston with the Hudson River via the uplands of Connecticut. If ever a company had its share of trials and tribulations it was this firm. Yet its fascinating, topsy-turvy past is today largely forgotten. This work brings to life how the New York and New England Railroad evolved from humble beginnings to becoming a potent transportation force. Meticulously researched with many period images and a lively text, our journey begins in the 1840s and lasts until the late 1890s. Climb aboard for a special trip into this unique chapter of American railroad history!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the New England Association, Railway Superintendents: Organized in Boston, Massachusetts, April 5, 1848, Dissolved October 1, 1857 Washington, D. C., April, 1910. At a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Eastern Railroad Association held March 10, 1910, attention was called to a manuscript book containing the original records of the "New England Association of Railway Superintendents," organized April 5, 1848, and dissolved October 1, 1857, which appears to have been the first railway association formed in this country having among its objects the protection of its members from unjust claims for infringement of patents. The book has been in the possession of the Secretary of the Eastern Railroad Association since early in 1875, when he obtained it directly from the widow of the Secretary who kept the records. It is therefore authentic, and contains much interesting information in connection with early railway matters, together with the names and signatures in facsimile of some of the leading pioneers in the railway business in this country. Believing that the preservation in permanent form, and the possession of copies of this book would be appreciated, the Committee ordered a limited number of copies to be printed in pamphlet form for the use of the Association. With the exception of the addition of indexes to facilitate the finding of names, or subject matter, the contents of the record book are herewith reproduced in original form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary disaster investigation reports into the Shuttle, Three Mile Island, or the World Trade Centre did not happen by chance, but were the result of an evolution of the discourse communities involved with investigating technological accidents. The relationships of private companies, coroners, outside experts, and government investigators all had to be developed and experimented with before a genre of investigation reports could exist. This book is the story of the evolution of these investigation discourse communities in published reports written between 1833 and 1879. Using the reports generated by seven different accidents on railroads and steamboats between 1833 and 1876, it is possible to observe the changes in how these reports interacted and changed over the course of the nineteenth century: The Explosion of the Steamboat New England in the Connecticut River, 1833; The Explosion of the Locomotive Engine Richmond near Reading Pennsylvania, 1844; The Explosion of the Steam Boat Moselle in Cincinatti, 1838; The Camden and Amboy Railroad Collision in Burlington, New Jersey, 1855; The Gasconade Bridge Collapse on the Pacific Railroad in Missouri, 1855; The Eastern Railroad Collision in Revere, Massachusetts, 1871; The Ashtabula Railroad Bridge Collapse in Ohio, 1876
