The authors travelled more than 60,000 miles--all through New England, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and visited nearly 3,000 old burial grounds. Their photographs show details and full views of stones dating from 1664 to 1901, though most are from the 18th century, and beautifully recapture this vanishing art legacy.--back cover.

Book excerpt: In Puritan New England, with its abiding concern for things not of this world and its distrust of forms and ceremonies, one art flourished: the symbolic art of mortuary monument stonecarvers. This carefully researched, beautifully illustrated work was the first to consider this art in depth as a meaningful aesthetic-spiritual expression. It is reissued for today's readers, with a new preface outlining changes in the field since the book appeared in 1966.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries a sweeping movement in architectural and decorative taste dominated Western cultures. Known collectively by the descriptive term "Revival Styles," this phenomenon, which left a rich visual legacy upon the cultural landscapes of many nations, exhibited three primary manifestations: Classical (chiefly Greek and Roman), Gothic (or Medieval), and Egyptian (or Near Eastern). In America, for a variety of reasons, a significantly large amount of the creative energy inherent in the Revival movement was directed towards the conception and erection of spectacular monuments and memorials to prominent Americans. Frequently designed and executed by the leading architects and sculptors of the day, the great majority of these strikingly beautiful artifacts and structures were placed in the large "rural" cemeteries of American cities developed in the middle decades of the nineteenth century, where they remain for future generations to analyze and admire. In this richly illustrated volume, art historian Peggy McDowell and folklorist Richard E. Meyer blend their respective disciplinary perspectives, along with their shared long-standing fascination with cemeteries and funerary material culture, to provide a thoroughgoing descriptive analysis of this dramatic chapter in the history of American memorial art."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here lyes Buried the Body of MARTHA PERONNEAU...Departed This Life December Ye 14th 1746 Aged 13 Years." Such an inscription was typical of 18th century grave markers in Charleston, South Carolina. Many epitaphs went on to reveal much more about the deceased: personality, religious beliefs, career accomplishments and social position. Attention to social matters was a natural part of life in Charleston, where descendants of the city's 17th century British founders sought to recreate the class-conscious culture of aristocratic England. The merging of this culture with influences from French Huguenots, German Lutherans, Scottish Presbyterians and Spanish Jews led to funeral practices unique in the American colonies. Focusing on pieces created between 1695 and 1802, this volume offers a detailed examination of the tombstones and grave markers from 18th century Charleston. It discusses not only the general trends and the symbolism of the period's gravestone art--such as skulls, portraits, ascending souls and stylized vegetation--but also examines specific instances of these popular motifs. Tombstones from Charleston's oldest and most significant churches, including the Circular Congregational Church, St. Philip's Anglican Church, the French Huguenot Church and the First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, are explored in detail. The work looks at how Charleston gravestones differed from funerary art elsewhere in the American colonies and reveals them to be some of the earliest examples of American sculpture. A guide to colonial gravestone symbols and a glossary of relevant Latin terms are also included.

Book excerpt: No era in American history has been more fascinating to Americans, or more critical to the ultimate destiny of the United States, than the colonial era. Between the time that the first European settlers established a colony at Jamestown in 1607 through the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the outlines of America's distinctive political culture, economic system, social life, and cultural patterns had begun to emerge. Designed to complement the high school American history curriculum as well as undergraduate survey courses, "Colonial America: An Encyclopedia of Social, Political, Cultural, and Economic History" captures it all: the people, institutions, ideas, and events of the first three hundred years of American history. While it focuses on the thirteen British colonies stretching along the Atlantic, Colonial America sets this history in its larger contexts. Entries also cover Canada, the American Southwest and Mexico, and the Caribbean and Atlantic world directly impacting the history of the thirteen colonies. This encyclopedia explores the complete early history of what would become the United States, including portraits of Native American life in the immediate pre-contact period, early Spanish exploration, and the first settlements by Spanish, French, Dutch, Swedish, and English colonists. This monumental five-volume set brings America's colonial heritage vibrantly to life for today's readers. It includes: thematic essays on major issues and topics; detailed A-Z entries on hundreds of people, institutions, events, and ideas; thematic and regional chronologies; hundreds of illustrations; primary documents; and a glossary and multiple indexes.

In Wound Chevy at Wounded Knee (Best of the Best American Essays (1994)) Diana Hume Georgia recounts how she lived a trapped and futile life as a white teenage bride on an Indian reservation. As an adult she confronts drunken hunters outside her isolated cabin; she faces her fear of heights by climbing in the White Mountains; she unflinchingly delves into her long-standing engagement with Anne Sexton's poetry, and into her own father's suicide. Always she wonders: Can women learn to travel alone, on roads and in their daily lives, without fear.
