Book excerpt: The dynamic balance sheet management model formulated deterministically by Chambers and Charnes was extended stochastically by Cohen and Thore to a two-stage LPU2 model. This paper develops a chance-constrained model which compares well with the Cohen and Thore example but in addition is easily extendable to formulations of realistic size, as the C-T model is not, and with the availability of dual evaluators. Book excerpt: ALM Modeling and Balance Sheet Optimization is a comprehensive book that combines theoretical exploration with practical guidance and code examples on implementing a balance sheet optimization model. The book emphasizes the use of stochastic dynamic programming to develop a deep and holistic understanding of the banking problem. Encompassing the entire implementation stack – spanning from data layers to the specification of decision variables, business and regulatory constraints, objective functions, modeling strategies, solving techniques, debugging, and reporting – this book serves as a comprehensive guide for constructing highly effective balance optimization models from scratch, enabling the maximization of banking outcomes. Readers will learn how to build a mathematical model capable of generating projections for portfolios; balance sheet, income and cash flow statements; capital, and risk measures in real-world scenarios. This practical approach is particularly valuable for professionals involved in integrated stress testing, capital adequacy assessment, financial planning, and optimization tasks. In essence, the book offers valuable insights into the challenges of balance sheet optimization, providing readers with the necessary tools to build their own dynamic and comprehensive ALM models.

Book excerpt: This book, one of three volumes, showcases the effective transformation of companies providing banking and insurance services. This first volume gives a business-oriented introduction to the setting and the current challenges of fintech, regtech, and insurtech and provides an outlook on what will be needed in the future. Specific sub-departments in financial services are examined with a view to accounting, risk, and regulatory segments. The book also addresses the importance of cultural aspects of the coming digital transformation with an eye to requirements that will enable a digital bank or insurance company to thrive in 2025. The angle shifts over the volumes from a business-driven approach in “Disruption and DNA” to a strong technical focus in “Data Storage, Processing and Analysis”, leaving “Digitalization and Machine Learning Applications” with the business and technical aspects in-between.

Book excerpt: Theoretically optimal responses of banks to various liquidity and solvency shocks are mod- elled. The proposed framework is based on a risk-adjusted return portfolio choice in multiple periods subject to the default risk related either to liquidity or solvency problems. Performance of the model and sensitivity of optimal balance sheet structures to some key parameters of the model are illustrated in a specific calibrated setup. The results of the simulations shed light on the effectiveness of the liquidity and solvency regulation. The flexible implementation of the model and its semi-analytical solvability allows for various easy applications of the framework for the macro-prudential policy analysis.

Book excerpt: To stabilize and bring down nonperforming loans (NPLs) in the Italian banking system, the Italian authorities have been implementing a number of reforms, aimed among others at speeding up insolvency and enforcement proceedings, strengthening bank corporate governance, cleaning up balance sheets, and facilitating bank consolidation. This paper examines the Italian banking system’s NPL problem, which ties up capital, weighing on bank profitability and authorities’ economic reforms. It argues for a comprehensive approach, encompassing economic, supervisory, and legal measures. The authorities’ reforms are important steps toward this end. The paper describes measures that could further support their actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of Off-Balance Sheet Activities is to gain insights into, and propose meaningful solutions to, those issues raised by the current proliferation of off-balance sheet transactions. The book has its origins in a New York University conference that focused on this topic. Jointly undertaken by the Vincent C. Ross Institute of Accounting Research and New York University's Salomon Center for the study of Financial Institutions at the Stern School of Business, the conference brought together academic researchers and practitioners in the field of accounting and finance to address the issues with the broad-mindedness requisite of a group whose approaches to solutions are as different from each other as their respectively theoretical and applied approaches to the disciplines of finance and accounting. The essays are divided into two sections. The first covers issues surrounding OBS activities and banking and begins with a brief introduction that places the essays into context. OBS activities and the underinvestment problem, whether loan sales are really OBS, and money demand and OBS liquidity are examined in detail. Section two, which also begins with a brief introduction, focuses on issues of securitized assets and financing. A report on recognition and measurement issues in accounting for securitized assets is followed by three separate discussion essays. Other subjects covered include contract theoretic analysis of OBS financing, the use of OBS financing to circumvent financial covenant restrictions, and debt contracting and financial contracting. The latter two contributions are also followed by discussion essays. This unique collection of papers will prove to be an interesting and valuable tool for accounting and finance professionals as well as for academics involved in these fields. It will also be an important addition to public, college, and university libraries.

Book excerpt: Banks in developing economies often face a mismatch in the currency denomination of their liabilities (foreign currency denominated debt) and assets (domestic currency loans to domestic borrowers). We study the effect of this mismatch on business cycles and monetary policy in a sticky-price, dynamic general equilibrium model of a small open economy. We find from the model analysis that a fixed exchange rate rule that stabilizes the balance sheets of banks offers greater stability than an interest rate rule that targets inflation in the sticky-price sector of the economy.
