Book excerpt: This is one of three short stories about three Chinese brothers, Ping, Pong, and Pa Dul, who lived with their father, a widower, and a somewhat absent-minded professor. Living near the drum tower, they often played there and Pa Dul was the youngest and rather an imp. He found where the Drum and Bell had been moved and saw that they were deteriorating badly. Not knowing what to do, he finally showed the Drum and the Bell to an out of town friend of his fathers while the three brothers were taking him on a tour to the Drum Tower. The friend was upset to see these historical items being destroyed and wrote a letter to the city officials who repaired and relocated the Drum and Bell. This really happened to me and an American visitor but I wrote the story in a Chinese setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You can't judge a book by its cover. To look at her, one would never think suburbanite homemaker Jane Jeffry would be interested in murder and mayhem. But after all the corpses she's come across - and killers she's unmasked - she's practically an expert on the subject. Which is why, with best buddy Shelley Nowack in tow, Jane's booking down to a nearby mystery writers' convention to mingle with the brightest lights of literary crime ... and maybe drum up some interest in her own recently completed manuscript." "They're all there: editors, agents, publishing bigwigs, and famous authors like Jane and Shelley's personal fave, Felicity Roane. Even Jane's longtime honey, Detective Mel VanDyne, is a scheduled guest speaker. Of course there are bound to be some bad apples in the bunch: macho-malicious literary critic-cum-snake Zac Zebra, for example, and loudmouth Vernetta Strausmann, who self-published her despicable whodunit and successfully hawked it on the Internet." "However, what would a mystery convention be without a mystery? So one is graciously supplied when a famous ego-squashing editor keels over at the speaker's podium, undone by an anonymous poisoner. And when a much-hated book-bashing journalist is himself bashed quite nastily in the parking lot, it seems fairly certain that at least one real-life murder is stalking the proceedings. But who is he/she/them? The dirt-dishing, pseudonymous Internet gossip monger "Ms. Mystery," who's lurking around there somewhere? The local bookseller who dearly loves "Modern Golden Age" women writers? The avid reader who seems to know a bit too much about the personal lives of the famous attendees?" "Jane and Shelley are on the case, ready to snoop, eavesdrop, and gossip their way to a solution. But the killer they seek is no open book ... and may turn out to be harder - and deadlier - to read than they initially imagined."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: It was a time of change, a time of uncertainty, a time for men and women of vision and commitment, a time of high adventure for those with the courage to step into the unknown, or for those who had nothing to lose. It was Christie's time. From Swiss estates, to the African wilderness, join Christie in her epic journey, through the changing landscapes of Europe and Africa at the turning of the twentieth century and into a wild and uncertain future. Christie's story is an account of a long life remembered, and the panoramic lives of those who touched her, retold, by a granddaughter, who was paying more attention than Christie realised. Listen, as her granddaughter sings the song of Christie's history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1960s, Steve Reich radically renewed the musical landscape with a back-to-basics sound that came to be called Minimalism. These early works, characterized by a relentless pulse and static harmony, focused single-mindedly on the process of gradual rhythmic change. Throughout his career, Reich has continued to reinvigorate the music world, drawing from a wide array of classical, popular, sacred, and non-western idioms. His works reflect the steady evolution of an original musical mind. Writings on Music documents the creative journey of this thoughtful, groundbreaking composer. These 64 short pieces include Reich's 1968 essay "Music as a Gradual Process," widely considered one of the most influential pieces of music theory in the second half of the 20th century. Subsequent essays, articles, and interviews treat Reich's early work with tape and phase shifting, showing its development into more recent work with speech melody and instrumental music. Other essays recount his exposure to non-western music -- African drumming, Balinese gamelan, Hebrew cantillation -- and the influence of these musics as structures and not as sounds. The writings include Reich's reactions to and appreciations of the works of his contemporaries (John Cage, Luciano Berio, Morton Feldman, Gyorgy Ligeti) and older influences (Kurt Weill, Schoenberg). Each major work of the composer's career is also explored through notes written for performances and recordings. Paul Hillier, himself a respected figure in the early music and new music worlds, has revisited these texts, working with the author to clarify their central narrative: the aesthetic and intellectual development of an influential composer. For long-time listeners and young musicians recently introduced to his work, this book provides an opportunity to get to know Reich's music in greater depth and perspective.

Book excerpt: Hiding in a lake under lily pads after fleeing U.S. soldiers, a Dakota woman was given a vision over the course of four days instructing her to build a large drum and teaching her the songs that would bring peace and end the killing of her people. From the Dakota, the "big drum" spread throughout the Algonquian-speaking tribes to the Ojibwe, becoming the centerpiece of their religious ceremonies. This edition of "The Ojibwe Dance Drum, "originally created through the collaboration of Ojibwe drum maker and singer William Bineshii Baker Sr. and folklorist Thomas Vennum, has a new introduction by history professor Rick St. Germaine that discusses the research behind this book and updates readers on the recent history of the Ojibwe Drum Dance.

Krause loves its design, colours, compact workmanship in its interior and most of all, its unusual way of dialling. Almost all telephones of the 1950s are equipped with rotary dials, but Siemens broke new grounds with the Drum Dial. In this second volume, Krause presents the chronology of newly discovered patents, which, since 1931 and with interruptions due to World War II, were developed over two decades, resulting in an innovative total work of art, a "telephone" that is one of a kind.
