Book excerpt: The Odonata are a relatively small, hemimetabolous insect order with a world fauna of about 5,000 species. Research has been conducted on odonates in Kentucky for 165 years, resulting in a state list of 156 species. Forty-seven of these species were known from the upper Rockcastle River drainage, including several species that have a Kentucky State Nature Preserves conservation designation. Prior to this study, a season long survey of the odonates of the upper Rockcastle River drainage had never been conducted. Adult and larval odonates were collected from June 2002 to September 2003. A total of 26 species (15 Anisoptera, 11 Zygoptera) was collected during this study, resulting in 29 new county records for Jackson, Laurel, and Rockcastle counties. The Kentucky flight season for six species was also lengthened. Ecological observations were made for many of the species collected in this study and larval habitat was determined for six species. Adult odonates were observed feeding on a variety of other insects including Diptera, Lepidoptera, Ephemeroptera, and small Zygoptera. Mating and ovipositioning behaviors were observed for several species including the pre-copulatory behaviors of Calopteryx maculata. The larval emergence of one species, Stylogomphus albistylus, was also observed.
