Book Synopsis The Domestic Politics of International Relations by : Roderic Alley
Download or read book The Domestic Politics of International Relations written by Roderic Alley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. An important comparative study, which considers the domestic/international interface. The book covers climate change in Australia; New Zealand and the abolition of nuclear weapons; the Bougainville conflict and settlement in Papua New Guinea; Decolonization (New Caledonia, East Timor, West Papua); Indigenous Rights (Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji); Governance Reform and Environmental Management challenges in the Pacific Island states. The conclusion evaluates propositions advanced in the introductory chapter regarding the distinctive domestic/international issues raised and argues that, in order to comprehend foreign relations in an increasingly complex world, there is no substitute for a thorough knowledge of distinctive local, social and political dynamics shaping international orientations. The theme of the book is the way that these interactions have operated in the cases examined.

Book Synopsis The ANZUS Crisis, Nuclear Visiting and Deterrence by : Michael Pugh
Download or read book The ANZUS Crisis, Nuclear Visiting and Deterrence written by Michael Pugh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of nuclear weapons has been a critical problem for the NATO alliance. In the Pacific, a region of increasing strategic interest for the United States and Soviet Union, nuclear weapons have been an environmental concern since the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Opposition to nuclear tests has now been taken a step further with the creation of a South pacific Nuclear Free Zone and the decision by a New Zealand Government to ban port visits by vessels believed to be carrying nuclear weapons. New Zealand's proposal to back its policy with legislation had been seen by the Reagan and Thatcher administrations as a threat to the principle of 'neither confirm nor deny' the presence of nuclear weapons on vessels. This 1989 study examines the questions of principle at issue, the evolution of the ANZUS crisis, its implications for the Western alliance structure as a whole, and the degree to which the 'nuclear-free' virus' in the South Pacific might be catching.

Book excerpt: "In six chapters James Rolfe analyses the defence policy system in detail. He describes the organisation of defence, discusses the evolution of the policy-setting parts of the organisation, and then concentrates on the processes used to make policy decisions and the factors which policy makers consider to be important. The book employs examples from a wide range of issues and events of the last 20 years and includes details on alliance relationships and how they are managed, troop deployments and the background to equipment decisions. This is the first study of New Zealand's defence policy system. It is completely up to date and the arugments in it are pertinent to current debates about the necessity for defence and defence capabilties." -- Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the question of whether peacekeeping commanders can be held accountable for a failure to protect the civilian population in the mission area. This requires an assessment of whether peacekeeping commanders have an obligation to act against such serious crimes being committed under domestic and international law. The work uses the cases of the Dutch and Belgian peacekeeping commanders in Srebrenica and Kigali as examples, but it also places the analysis into the context of contemporary peacekeeping operations. It unfolds two main arguments. First, it provides a critical note to the contextual interpretation given to international law in relation to peacekeeping. It is argued that establishing a specific paradigm for peacekeeping operations with clear rules of interpretation and benchmark criteria would benefit peacekeeping and international law by making the contextual interpretation of international law redundant. Second, it is held that alternative options to the existing forms of criminal responsibility for military commanders should be considered, possibly focusing more clearly on failing to fulfil a norm of protection that is specific to peacekeeping and distinct from protective obligations under international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

Book Synopsis Emerging Powers in a Comparative Perspective by : Vidya Nadkarni
Download or read book Emerging Powers in a Comparative Perspective written by Vidya Nadkarni and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the rising influence of emerging powers in global politics, with a special focus on the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China). Chapters contributed by international scholars first look at the changing status of the US in the 21st century and at the EU as both an emerging and innovative power. China's rising power status, India's regional and global influence, Russia's re-emergence, and Brazil's growing regional and international role are then analyzed comparatively to explain how the BRIC states are poised to become vital players not only in politics and economy, but also in key international concerns such as terrorism, globalization, and climate change. The book provides a detailed analysis of political, economic, security, and foreign policy trends in the BRIC countries to address such questions as to whether they will seek to revise the international order or work within it and how they will deal with transnational global problems. Using a unique comparative approach, the text will appeal to undergraduate students in world politics, international relations, and foreign policy.
