Book excerpt: THE DOHA Wise Rhyming Couplets from Sufi, Bhakti, Christian Mystic & other Poets AN ANTHOLOGY Translation & Introduction Paul Smith A doha is a poem in the form of one rhyming couplet of two lines. This might seem very simple and easy to understand, but they often have a truly deep meaning. Hindi and Urdu Bhakti poets and Persian Sufi poets and other eastern language and religious poets have been writing dohas for over fourteen centuries. Many poets have used dohas to write entire stories and epics. In Europe they were called alexandrines. Kabir managed to convey his philosophy of life, love, devotion and religion through his magical couplets. He wrote them in Hindi, using everyday examples so that they can be understood by the common man. INTRODUCTION: The Doha... its Poetic Form and History. THE POETS: Saraha, Nizami, Baba Farid, 'Attar, Sadi, Nizam ud-din, Amir Khusrau, Kabir, Tulsidas, Dadu, Rahim, Tahir Ghani, Vrind, Angelus Silesius, Ramdas, Bulleh Shah, Shah Latif, Bhima Bhoi. Biographies & Selected Bibliographies with each poet. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept, often for the first time, and the beauty and meaning of these wise, powerful, mostly spiritual, beautiful, short poems. Large Format Edition, Paperback 7" x 10" Pages 552. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'."It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran."Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Book excerpt: ANGELUS SILESIUS THE CHRISTIAN-MYSTIC SUFI POET A Selection of Rhyming Couplets from the Cherubinic Wanderer Translation and Preface by Paul Smith Angelus Silesius was a mystic of the Counter-Reformation. He was born Johannes Scheffler in 1624 in the province of Silesia, Poland. In 1653, he converted to Catholicism from Lutheranism and spent the rest of his life avidly trying to reconvert the people of Silesia. Today, however, he is known primarily for his mystical poetry, which was written in the form of 1676 'Alexandrines', which are simple rhymed couplets published as The Cherubinic Wanderer. Of course they lose some in translation and many seem quite naive, but the depth of feeling cannot be denied and many more can be seen to approach Haiku and other short, mystical poetry from around the world including the Dohas and Slokas of the Sufi poets of India Baba Farid and Shah Latif. In fact his way of thinking and his belief is almost identical to the Sufis. Here is a cross-section selection of 177 of his mystical poems in the correct form. Preface, appendixes on his life and book. 259 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. Book excerpt: Join renowned spiritual teacher Adyashanti for a practice-based journey out of the thinking mind and into the awakened awareness beyond perceptual reality. For renowned teacher Adyashanti, every single moment contains a doorway into spiritual awakening. But what does it actually mean to “wake up” to the truth of reality? And what does it take to recognize these opportunities? In The Direct Way, Adya (as his students call him) offers a sequence of 30 practices intended to connect with and cultivate ever-greater awareness of the unseen dimensions of your being. From the simple expression of “I am,” to an exploration of the Spiritual Heart, and all the way into the fundamental ground of being, these exercises emphasize that the process of awakening takes “many small glimpses, experienced many times.” Adya concludes with practical pointers on how to integrate transcendent experiences into the everyday fabric of life—including your career, personal goals, and intimate relationships. Here you will discover: How to dis-identify from conceptual, ego-based thinkingPerceiving the ego as a tool to navigate consciousness rather than an obstacleThe “knowing yet empty” quality of foundational awarenessThe surprising route to realizing awareness of the Spiritual HeartFeeling through the Spiritual Heart as a way to experience true interconnectionThe meaning of the Zen teaching phrase, “This very body is the Buddha”Exploring the exhilarating paradox of Being and BecomingHow to establish anchor points to stabilize your journey into the Ground of BeingWhat it means to live each day with “enlightened relativity”How awakening puts control of your experience in your hands—but also the responsibility for it No one experiences awakening quite the same. With The Direct Way, join Adya to discover pathways toward an awareness as wide as the sky and as personal as your innermost heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Text offers a vivid portrait of one community's interaction with its favorite text—the epic Ramcaritmanas—and the way in which performances of the epic function as a flexible and evolving medium for cultural expression. Anthropologists, historians of religion, and readers interested in the culture of North India and the performance arts will find breadth of subject, careful scholarship, and engaging presentation in this unique and beautifully illustrated examination of Hindi culture. The most popular and influential text of Hindi-speaking North India, the epic Ramcaritmanas is a sixteenth century retelling of the Ramayana story by the poet Tulsidas. This masterpiece of pre-modern Hindi literature has always reached its largely illiterate audiences primarily through oral performance including ceremonial recitation, folksinging, oral exegesis, and theatrical representation. Drawing on fieldwork in Banaras, Lutgendorf breaks new ground by capturing the range of performance techniques in vivid detail and tracing the impact of the epic in its contemporary cultural context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nautanki performances of northern India entertain their audiences with often ribald and profane stories. Rooted in the peasant society of pre-modern India, this theater vibrates with lively dancing, pulsating drumbeats, and full-throated singing. In Grounds for Play, Kathryn Hansen draws on field research to describe the different elements of nautanki performance: music, dance, poetry, popular story lines, and written texts. She traces the social history of the form and explores the play of meanings within nautanki narratives, focusing on the ways important social issues such as political authority, community identity, and gender differences are represented in these narratives. Unlike other styles of Indian theater, the nautanki does not draw on the pan-Indian religious epics such as the Ramayana or the Mahabharata for its subjects. Indeed, their storylines tend to center on the vicissitudes of stranded heroines in the throes of melodramatic romance. Whereas nautanki performers were once much in demand, live performances now are rare and nautanki increasingly reaches its audiences through electronic media—records, cassettes, films, television. In spite of this change, the theater form still functions as an effective conduit in the cultural flow that connects urban centers and the hinterland in an ongoing process of exchange.
