Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned essentially with the compulsory schools and the work of teachers following 'rebirth' or the regaining of independence in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Although often considered 'en bloc' each country has its own history, its own culture and its own literature. There are important linguistic and religious distinctions to be made as well as distinctive trading liaisons, both currently and historically. For the Baltic States the final decade of the twentieth century has been turbulent in the extreme and the 1990' s have posed major challenges to teachers and to school directors. Not the least of these has been the challenge of regaining independence and nationhood, after years of Soviet occupation. There has also been significant privatisation and a slow but purposeful change from a command to a market economy. Changing the curriculum may be easy, 'changing the mind', by comparison, may well be a more lengthy process. For the future the Baltic States seek membership of the European Union within the first decade of the new millennium. There will be opportunities for schools to develop closer links with the West, to promote exchanges of teachers and pupils and to join in networks promoting the 'European dimension' in different ways.

Book excerpt: This book takes a closer look at the relation between current issues and trends in higher education and scientific research in the Arab World and in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states of Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE). This thoroughly researched text traces the development of higher education in the GCC area as it continues to be positioned in an intersection of international and local factors. The text further articulates the pivotal political and cultural influences that act as real and perceived barriers towards the advancement of key fields. The chapters analyze the current policy trends, structures, and coping alternatives in addressing higher education challenges, whilst also providing comparative first-hand texts with the other Arab states in the region. By drawing focus on the GCC area, the text identifies the crucial factors that hamper learning and research performance. The book serves as an invaluable discussion on the implications for policy makers and HEIs in relation to the eponymous regions and other Arab states in the GCC area. Enhancing understanding of the scope, scale, and complexity of higher education and scientific research in the GCC area, the book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of educational policy, comparative and international education and higher education.

Based upon a solid theoretical framework and up-to-date data, the 19 country-specific chapters in this handbook give a comparative overview of the structuring, steering and supporting elements of disability sport policy and sport participation levels amongst persons with a disability, as well as the extent to which countries adopt policies to promote inclusion in sport in this population. A multitude of authors also identify the various methods and challenges in collecting sport participation data with regard to persons with a disability. This handbook will be a valuable resource for academic study across a range of sport and disability related programs, as well as a point of reference for researchers and policymakers working in this area.

This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication brings together the texts adopted by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. The Congress, a consultative body of the Council of Europe, is made up of two chambers: one representing local authorities, the other the regions. Its aim is to reinforce democratic structures at local and regional level, and in particular to help the newly-emerging democracies in central and eastern Europe. The Congress meets once a year in Strasbourg, and is open to delegations from other European organisations which have consultative status with the Council, as well as to special guests or observers from some countries which are not members of the Organisation. The Congress adopts three different types of texts: recommendations, opinions and resolutions. Recommendations are proposals to the Committee of Ministers, and their application is left up to each member government. Sometimes they are also addressed to other international organisations. Opinions usually refer to questions to the Congress from the Committee of Ministers or the Parliamentary Assembly. The Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly consult the Congress on questions which are likely to affect the competence and the basic interests of the local and regional authorities which the Congress represents. Resolutions reflect the décisions that the Congress is authorised to take, or make recommendations to local and/or regional authorities and their associations.
