Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Life and the New Birth: With a Supplement on the Incarnation Two pamphlet editions of a material portion of this work, under the same title, were published in 1850. The same portion was afterwards incorporated into the volume entitled "Search of Truth." The original work, and some other of the more practical parts of the volume just named, form the basis of the present publication. To these materials large additions have been made upon kindred branches of Christian knowledge, with the hope that the whole will prove to be a Manual adapted to the needs of our time. For the reception of my first efforts by the Church at large, and by many of her most gifted sons, I have been profoundly grateful. Much of the opposition which these publications encountered proceeded from local disturbances which have long since passed away, and the rest, I think, from misapprehensions growing out of the excited temper of the times. Contention and party spirit may hardly ever be expected to cease from the Church, yet the perils of the present day have produced a very general conviction that Christians must come closer together to strive successfully for the faith once delivered. It is hoped, therefore, that all will welcome the feeblest effort to add to the unity and strength of the Christian host, and to furnish a guide to inquiring souls. Some two thousand years later, people are still confused about the term "born again," though more people than ever claim to have had the experience. In this booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul cuts through the confusion and carefully explains what it means to be born again. Dr. Sproul affirms that the new birth is essential for salvation and goes on to show that this regeneration is a sovereign work of God in our hearts. The Crucial Questions booklet series by Dr. R.C. Sproul offers succinct answers to important questions often asked by Christians and thoughtful inquirers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redemption for all of humanity has been made available to all through one Man—Jesus Christ. Salvation is a free and unmerited gift to man from the throne of grace. Nonetheless, the price of the cross was, indeed, costly. A true relationship with God— through—Jesus Christ involves more than following a "free-style" doctrine. Jesus said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God" (Jn. 3:3). The immediate goal of being born-again is to see the Kingdom of God. Yet, there is an issue of blindness among believers that must be resolved. It is not enough be saved, join a church, or even to become a missionary, although these are noble things. Undeniably, there is a distinct journey for each individual in Christ, but one thing that applies to all Christians is the need for obedient adherence to the principles in the Scriptures. While some may practice a permissive theology, the true sons and daughters of God ought not to "cherry-pick" through the Scriptures to find what they are willing to apply in their own lives. Reject one part of the Word of God and you must reject it all—or else—embrace it all and live it! The institutional church, with its numerous denominations, has no soul to be transformed, but each believer does. Jesus died to save individual believers not denominational entities. God adopts common individuals and they become His unique sons and daughters. The Mystery and Miracle of New Birth is for believers who desire to know and practice sound biblical doctrine—because doctrine matters.

Book excerpt: In this compelling study of the birth and infancy of Jesus, Robert Miller separates fact from fiction in the gospel narratives and relates them to stories about the miraculous births of Israelite heroes and of Greek and Roman sons of God. Born Divine analyzes the Christian claim that the birth and childhood of Jesus fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. The historical and theological dimensions of the virgin birth tradition are discussed with honesty and insight. This wide-ranging book also presents additional infancy gospels from the second century through the Middle Ages.

Nicodemus was confused as to how such a thing could happen, but the Lord revealed that it is not a physical matter. To be born again is to be born of the Spirit in our spirit, and this new birth is our entry into the kingdom of God. In this booklet compiled from Life-study of John, Witness Lee opens up this passage in John, giving us the meaning of regeneration and the definition and significance of the kingdom of God.

Book excerpt: Following fourteen years as a parish minister in the Church of Scotland, Dr Andrew McGowan became the first Director of the Highland Theological Institute which opened in Elgin in N.E. Scotland in 1994. He writes with special concern for the young Christian: ?This is a guidebook intended for those who have embarked on the journey of faith.' His principal aim is that they reach a better understanding of what has happened, and will happen, to them as a consequence of the new birth which marks the very beginning of the Christian's new life and leads to the faith which is the gift of God's grace. After helpful chapters on the need for, and the nature of regeneration, there are three chapters dealing with justification, and six on sanctification. In this way, Dr McGowan shows how the new birth leads to a new relationship with God and to holiness of life. John Blanchard remarks in his Foreword, ?All the important doctrines involved in the experience of becoming a Christian are carefully linked together in a way which makes one marvel all the more at the grace of God in salvation.' The treatment of these doctrines is naturally brief as this book is intended as a ?starter'. Should we look forward to a ?finisher'? The reader is presented with an abundance of Bible references as he goes along, rather than at the ends of chapters, and he is advised to ?look up the passages from the Bible as they are mentioned'. In Chapter 13, the author points to how regeneration fits into the doctrines already examined, showing from Romans 8: 28 - 30 how Paul is speaking about the place of born-again people in God's plan, and the certainty of salvation of those upon whom God has set his love in advance. In Chapter 14, Dr McGowan deals with ?effectual calling', to show how the salvation provided for God's people in Jesus Christ takes place. The final chapter addresses the non-Christian reader with searching questions. This book should be available on the church bookstall.

Book excerpt: "You must be born again." - John 3:7 What did the Lord mean when He spoke the words above? To be born again with the life of Christ is the greatest blessing any human being can ever receive, but it is also a great mystery. Born Again makes an excellent Bible study tool for exploring the topic of our new birth, because it simply goes through the scriptures to cover, point-by-point, a number of the crucial and wonderful things that happen to us the moment we believe in Jesus Christ. From Chapter 1, "What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?" We must ask ourselves, do we have a subjective Christ? Yes, we know so many facts about Him, but is He real to us? We can talk about Him and appreciate Him, but do we experience Him in our daily lives? No doubt, to be born again is to have a genuine, subjective experience of Christ, but that should only be the beginning of our experience of Him. We need to substantiate our experience of being born again day after day and year after year, throughout all the rest of our life. We should enjoy the riches we received from our salvation throughout our entire life. The Lord saved us so that He could become so real to us in our experience. For this to happen, what we received the moment we first opened our heart and believed in the Lord Jesus needs to become our continuous enjoyment. This is the Lord's marvelous desire for us, and this is why we were born again. - pages 16-17. Table of Contents: Preface 1. What Does It Mean to Be Born Again? 2. We Have Received the Divine Life (1) 3. We Have Received the Divine Life (2) 4. Our Position Before We Were Born Again 5. Our Wonderful New Position 6. What We Have Become in Christ 7. The New Testament defines new birth and new life completely differently.
