Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century, the area that would become the state of Maine was still part of Massachusetts - a colony of a colony within the sprawling British empire. This first comprehensive account of the Revolution "downeast" is the story of a people initially too preoccupied with day-to-day survival to pay much attention to the rising temper of imperial controversy. When war did erupt, many Maine colonists hoped that their geographical isolation and the presence of Native tribes - many of whom were longstanding British foes - would protect them from royal forces in nearby Nova Scotia. But this was not to be. Soon enemy privateers plundered the region's coastal settlements and shipping, and in 1779 the British established a base at the mouth of the Penobscot River. Heartened by the British presence, local loyalists sprang into action and transformed a revolution into a bitter civil war. For Maine, as for many other areas of the rebelling colonies, the struggle with England proved to be a divisive ordeal that heightened prewar social, economic, and political differences and created new ones. James S. Leamon notes that Maine's revolutionary experience can best be understood in the context of other conflicted regions - Georgia, Long Island, Maryland's Delmarva Peninsula, and the Carolina backcountry - where disrupted economies, British incursions, guerrilla warfare, and shifting loyalties defined the Revolution.

Book excerpt: "After the Revolutionary War ended, the new American nation grappled with a question about its identity: Were the states sovereign entities or subordinates to a powerful federal government? The War of 1812 brought this vexing issue into sharp relief, as a national government intent on waging an unpopular war confronted a populace in Massachusetts that was vigorously opposed to it. Maine, which at the time was part of Massachusetts, served as the battleground in this political struggle. Joshua M. Smith recounts an innovative history of the war, focusing on how it specifically affected what was then called the District of Maine. Drawing on archival materials from the United States, Britain, and Canada, Smith exposes the bitter experience of Maine's citizens during that conflict as they endured multiple hardships, including starvation, burdensome taxation, smuggling, treason, and enemy occupation. War's inherent miseries, along with a changing relationship between regional and national identities, gave rise to a statehood movement that rejected a Boston-centric worldview in favor of a broadly American identity"--

Book excerpt: An account of a uniquely located county's involvement in the Civil War - unique because of its connections to Canada and access to the ocean. The "Home Front" chapter outlines the politics, attitudes toward the war, recruitment successes and failures, effects on home life, and relations with Canada. Army regiments containing 50 or more county soldiers are briefly followed through the war.Soldiers' wartime experiences, from mundane to tragic to glorious, are recounted.Navy life and operations are outlined, and effects of the war on coastal seafaring.Whenever possible, county participants' names are connected to the battles and other experiences of the war.An appendix lists some 4,700 names of soldiers and sailors - more than 10% of the county's population - and their assignments and fates. In light of the information offered herein, the reader is invited to consider (as does the author) the eternal questions of the meaning of this great conflict and what lessons it may carry for our present and future. The book includes 45 photographs over four chapters, 6 tables, and an extensive appendix of soldiers listed by town of origin and including their age, regiment, rank and fate.
