Book excerpt: Selected zooplankton from three oligotrophic lakes in Oregon were studied to determine whether or not their instantaneous birth rates and densities could be used in lake classification. The species of zooplankton studied in their respective lakes were Daphnia, pulex in Crater Lake, Daphnia longispina in Odell Lake, and Daphnia longispina and Diaphanosoma brachyurum in Woahink Lake. Instantaneous birth rates, densities and other population parameters were estimated for these species. The species studied in Odell and Woahink Lakes were also collected to determine the relationship between diel vertical distribution of these species and the temperature and phytoplankton primary production occurring in the lakes, Woahink Lake Daphnia had the highest instantaneous birth rates for Daphnia sp. of the three lakes. However, Woahink Lake Daphnia carried fewer eggs and were less dense than Daphnia in Odell Lake on every sampling date. Crater Lake Daphnia were usually less dense and had lower instantaneous birth rates than was observed for the Woahink Lake Daphnia. Because of changes in the density of zooplankters from one year to the next, as occurred with Daphnia in Crater Lake, and the lack of correlation between phytoplankton primary production and density, as occurred for Daphnia and Diaphanosoma in Woahink Lake, application of these population dynamics to lake systematics were nullified. The finite birth rate also lacked the expected correlation with phytoplankton primary production for all the selected species in the study lakes. The lack of correlation may be due to interactions between the total species of zooplankton present in the lakes. If instantaneous birth rate and density were calculated for all the species in each lake it might be possible to use them for lake classification. However, the time expended in analysis would be prohibitive. The did vertical distribution of Daphnia in Odell. Lake showed a typical migration to the surface at night and a return to deeper water during daylight hours. In Woahink Lake, however, Daphnia and Diaphanosoma were found to migrate only when the lake reached temperatures near 15°C or greater. The phytoplankton primary production occurring during the periods when migration did not take place, was equal to or greater than that occurring during some of the periods when vertical migration did occur. These observations may or may not have significance since the density of these two species did not show correlation with primary production.

Book excerpt: During the summers of 1967 and 1968 the horizontal distribution and did vertical migrations of zooplankton were studied within the unique environment of Crater Lake. Sampling of the horizontal distribution was done by towing plankton nets vertically in different locations. The vertical distribution was sampled by towing at different depths with a standard tow net and Miller samplers. During both summers, the greatest numbers of zooplankton were sampled in late August. Bosmina longispina was the most numerous zooplankter, while Daphnia pulex, insignificant in 1967, increased in abundance during 1968. The horizontal distribution of B. longispina was clumped, being consistently more abundant in some locations than others. D. pulex had a random, or near-uniform, distribution. Vertical migrations were not consistent and seem to occur only during certain times of the year. The depth of the maximum concentration of B. longispina was found to vary between distances of 12.5 and 25 m, and was located at depths of 75 to 50 m during the day and between 50 to 37.5 m at night. A few B. longispina, however, did migrate to the surface at night. On August 28 and 29, 1968, the entire adult population of D. pulex migrated from 62.5 m during the day to the surface at night. This migration appears to have reproductive advantages. Prior to this time, only a nocturnal scattering of a small portion of the total population of D. pulex occurred. Various ideas are given as to why these different migrations occurred, but based on the information that is presently available, any direct relationships between the variations of vertical migrations and environmental factors are difficult to make.

Book excerpt: The species compositions and densities of the littoral and pelagic zooplankton assemblages in Crater Lake were compared. The littoral and pelagic zooplankton assemblages of most lakes are typically different due to different habitat conditions in the two zones. The littoral zone of Crater Lake lacks many of the habitat characteristics, which distinguish a typical littoral zone from the pelagic zone. In fact, none of the water quality variables measured differed significantly between the littoral zone and epilimnion of the pelagic zone in Crater Lake. The littoral and pelagic zones of Crater Lake were sampled with twelve paired sites in August and again in September of 1995. For the purposes of this study, the littoral zone was defined as lakeward from the shoreline to the 10m depth contour. At each paired site the pelagic assemblage was sampled to a depth of 120m at the 200m depth contour. Despite the almost identical water quality between the pelagic and littoral zones of Crater Lake, lack of vascular macrophytes in the littoral zone, and well-mixed epilimnion, the littoral zooplankton assemblage differed from the pelagic assemblage in both species composition and density. Several ubiquitous zooplankton taxa dominated both the littoral and pelagic zooplankton assemblages, although the density of these taxa as well as the relative abundance of these taxa differed between zones. These ubiquitous species reached their maximum densities in the metalimnion of the pelagic zone at a depth range of 10 to 60 meters below the lake surface and were considered primarily pelagic. A shift in wind direction between sampling periods influenced the distribution of pelagic zooplankton taxa in the littoral zone. Twenty-four taxa were recorded in the littoral zone, and aside from infrequent exceptions, none of these taxa were found in the pelagic zooplankton assemblage. Most of the littoral taxa were primarily adapted to the benthic zone.

Book excerpt: Whatever theory may be advanced to explain diurnal migration, the underlying reactions involved must be demonstrated conc- sively in the laboratory before the explanation can be ?nally accepted George L. Clarke 1933 p. 434 In oceans and lakes, zooplankton often make diel vertical migrations (DVM), descending at dawn and coming up again in late afternoon and evening. The small animals cover distances of 10–40 m in lakes or even a few hundred metres in the open oceans. Although not as spectacular as migrations of birds or the massive movements of large mammals over the African savannas, the numbers involved are very large and the biomass exceed the bulk of the African herds. For example, in the Antarctic oceans swarms of “Krill” may cover kilometres across, with thousands of individuals per cubic metre. These Euphausiids are food for whales, the most bulky animals on earth. Zooplankton are key species in the pelagic food web, intermediary between algae and ?sh, and thus essential for the functioning of the pelagic community. Prey for many, they have evolved diverse strategies of survival and DVM is the most imp- tant one. Most ?sh are visually hunting predators and need a high light intensity to detect the often transparent animals. By moving down, the well-lit surface layers are avoided but they have to come up again at night to feed on algae.

The authors have gathered data from more than three hundred sources and organized into a useful laboratory manual. The taxonomic keys are easy to use, suitable for both classroom and laboratory identifications. Detailed line drawings are provided to help confirm the identification of the major species. Zoologists, limnologists, hydrobiologists, fish ecologists, and those who study or monitor water quality will welcome this dependable new identification tool. A concise summary of pertinent information on the ecology of these zooplankton is provided in the main body of the text. A check-list of all species reported from each of the Great Lakes and notes on the distribution and abundance of more than a hundred species were compiled from an extensive search of existing literature. In addition, the authors collected samples from several locations on Lake Superior, in order to provide information on the abundance and life histories of the major crustacean species.
