Download or read book The Language of Liberty 1660-1832 written by J. C. D. Clark and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book creates a new framework for the political and intellectual relations between the British Isles and America in a momentous period which witnessed the formation of modern states on both sides of the Atlantic and the extinction of an Anglican, aristocratic and monarchical order. Jonathan Clark integrates evidence from law and religion to reveal how the dynamics of early modern societies were essentially denominational. In a study of British and American discourse, he shows how rival conceptions of liberty were expressed in the conflicts created by Protestant dissent's hostility to an Anglican hegemony. The book argues that this model provides a key to collective acts of resistance to the established order throughout the period. The book's final section focuses on the defining episode for British and American history, and shows the way in which the American Revolution can be understood as a war of religion.

Book Synopsis Catalogues of Books by : Jonathan Edwards
Download or read book Catalogues of Books written by Jonathan Edwards and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final volume in The Works of Jonathan Edwards publishes for the first time Edwards’ “Catalogue,” a notebook he kept of books of interest, especially titles he hoped to acquire, and entries from his “Account Book,” a ledger in which he noted books loaned to family, parishioners, and fellow clergy. These two records, along with several shorter documents presented in the volume, illuminate Edwards’ own mental universe while also providing a remarkable window into the wider intellectual and print cultures of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic. An extensive critical introduction places Edwards’ book lists in the contexts that shaped his reading agenda, and the result is the most comprehensive treatment yet of his reading and of the fascinating peculiarities of his time and place.
Book Synopsis Protestant Nonconformist Texts: The eighteenth century by : Alan P. F. Sell
Download or read book Protestant Nonconformist Texts: The eighteenth century written by Alan P. F. Sell and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of four substantial volumes designed to demonstrate the range of interests of the several Protestant Nonconformist traditions from the time of their Separatist harbingers to the end of the twentieth century. In this volume we are concerned with the eighteenth century. It was a period in which Old Dissent - the Congregationalists, Baptists, Presbyterians and Quakers - had to face challenges from Enlightenment thought on the one hand and Evangelical Revival enthusiasm on the other. Largely in their own words, though with introductions contributed by the editors, we enter into the philosophical world of Isaac Watts, Richard Price, and others; we overhear doctrinal disputes over the doctrine of the Trinity; we meet such new arrivals on the religious scene as the Moravians, Sandemanians, Swedenborgians and Methodists (Calvinistic and Arminian). We consider the Nonconformists' views on the Church, the ministry and the sacraments; on Church, state and society; and on Christian nurture, piety and church life. From philosophical tomes to hymns, from sacramental questions to prison reform, from the most strait-laced Presbyterian to the most enthusiastic Jumper: this volume will remind scholars of, and aquaint others with, the intellectual excitements, the practical witness and the worship of the eighteenth-century Nonconformists.

Book Synopsis Testimony and Tradition by : Alan P.F. Sell
Download or read book Testimony and Tradition written by Alan P.F. Sell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally recognised for his scholarship in the philosophy of religion and Christian Doctrine, and for his ecclesiastical connections as former Theological Secretary of the Geneva-based World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Reformed theologian Alan Sell has an established reputation amongst theologians, church and intellectual historians, ecumenists, and ministers of religion. This collection of Alan Sell's work on the Reformed and Dissenting traditions - which includes the Presbyterian, Congregational and United Reformed Church - spans key doctrinal, philosophical, ethical, historical and ecumenical topics. The author illuminates central themes within the history and thought of the Reformed and Dissenting traditions including: the catholicity of the Church and danger of sectarianism, the importance of church meeting, the centrality of the Cross in Christian thought, the need for a viable Christian apologetic. Alan Sell also includes the only modern study of Henry Grove and papers on Andrew Fuller and P. T. Forsyth, in whose work there is currently a revival of interest. With growing interest world wide in the Reformed family, which is the third largest Christian world communion, this book offers an invaluable resource.
