Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Discourses and Sayings of Confucius: New Special Translation, Illustrated With Quotations From Goethe and Other Writers The attempt is therefore here made. To render this little book, which, of all books written in the Chinese language, we believe, is the book which gives to the Chinaman his intellectual and moral outfit, accessible to the general English reader. With this object in view, we have tried to make Confucius and his disciples speak in the same way as an educated Englishman would speak had he to express the same thoughts which the Chinese worthies had to express. In order further to take away as much as possible the sense of strange ness and peculiarity for the English readers, we have. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an innovative methodology for investigating how China has been conceptualised historically by tracing the development of four key cultural terms (filial piety, face, fengshui, and guanxi) between English and Chinese. It addresses how specific ideas about what constitutes the uniqueness of Chinese culture influence the ways users of these concepts think about China and themselves. Adopting a combination of archival research and mining of electronic databases, it documents how the translation process has been bound up in the production of new meaning. In uncovering how both sides of the translation process stand to be transformed by it, the study demonstrates the dialogic nature of translation and its potential contribution to cross-cultural understanding. It also aims to develop a foundation on which other area studies might build broader scholarship about global knowledge production and exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding China and the Chinese is of paramount importance in today's world. With China's rapid economic growth and increasing political influence, there has been significant interest in learning the Chinese language around the world. While we constantly hear about China in political and economic terms, we rarely come across a book that explains what Chinese culture or a Chinese person is like today. This book offers a critical overview of Chinese culture intended for college students as well as for general readers interested in the topic. While 'Chinese culture' is often deployed in terms of kung fu, Confucius or calligraphy, this book refers to the traditional and modern experiences out of which contemporary Chinese people have grown. Internationally renowned scholar in China Studies, Professor Qian Suoqiao invites readers to join him on an exciting intellectual journey to critically explore important issues including history, language, governmentality, self-cultivation, aesthetics of life, nationalism, cosmopolitanism, communism, the rise of China and her soft power which contribute to the formation of what we call 'Chinese'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting on the “clash of civilizations” as its point of departure, this book is based on a series of sixteen of the author’s interconnected, thematically focused lectures and calls for new perspectives to resist imperialistic homogeneity. Situated within a neo-humanist context, the book applies interactive cognition from an Asian perspective within which China can be perceived as an essential “other,” making it highly relevant in the quest for global solutions to the many grave issues facing humankind today. The author critiques American, European, and Chinese points of view, highlighting the significance of difference and the necessity of dialogue, before, ultimately, rethinking the nature of world literature and putting forward interactive cognition as a means of “reconciliation” between cultures. Chinese culture, as a frame of reference endowed with traditions of “harmony without homogeneity”, may help to alleviate global cultural confrontation and even reconstruct the understanding of human civilization. The book will be essential reading for scholars and students of Comparative Literature, Chinese Studies, and all those who are interested in cross-cultural communication and Chinese culture in general.

This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James St. André applies the perspective of cross-identity performance to the translation of a wide variety of Chinese texts into English and French from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Drawing on scholarship in cultural studies, queer studies, and anthropology, the author argues that many cross-identity performance techniques, including blackface, passing, drag, mimicry, and masquerade, provide insights into the history of translation practice. He makes a strong case for situating translation in its historical, social, and cultural milieu, reading translated texts alongside a wide variety of other materials that helped shape the image of “John Chinaman.” A reading of the life and works of George Psalmanazar, whose cross-identity performance as a native of Formosa enlivened early eighteenth-century salons, opens the volume and provides a bridge between the book’s theoretical framework and its examination of Chinese-European interactions. The core of the book consists of a chronological series of cases, each of which illustrates the use of a different type of cross-identity performance to better understand translation practice. St. André provides close readings of early pseudotranslations, including Marana’s Turkish Spy (1691) and Goldsmith’s Citizen of the World (1762), as well as adaptations of Hatchett’s The Chinese Orphan (1741) and Voltaire’s Orphelin de la Chine (1756). Later chapters explore Davis’s translation of Sorrows of Han (1829) and genuine translations of nonfictional material mainly by employees of the East India Company. The focus then shifts to oral/aural aspects of early translation practice in the nineteenth century using the concept of mimicry to examine interactions between Pidgin English and translation in the popular press. Finally, the work of two early modern Chinese translators, Gu Hongming and Lin Yutang, is examined as masquerade. Offering an original and innovative study of genres of writing that are traditionally examined in isolation, St. André’s work provides a fascinating examination of the way three cultures interacted through the shifting encounters of fiction, translation, and nonfiction and in the process helped establish and shape the way Chinese were represented. The book represents a major contribution to translation studies, Chinese cultural studies, postcolonial studies, and gender criticism.
