Book excerpt: "This book is a comprehensive, fully cross-referenced collection of over 28,000 terms, names and phrases used in entomology, incorporating an estimated 43,000 definitions. It is the only listing which covers insect anatomy, behaviour, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy and systematics. The origin, etymology, part of speech and definition of each term and phrase are all provided, including the language, meaning or root of each term and constituent parts. Where meanings have changed, or terms have been borrowed from other disciplines, the most current usage is indicated. The common names of insects, their scientific binomen and taxonomic classification are provided, with diagnoses of pest species in many cases. All insect order, suborder, superfamily, family and subfamily names are given, together with the diagnostic features of orders and families. Names of deceased entomologists, or scientists from other fields who have contributed to entomology are included, with the citation for their biography or obituary. The list of names is global, including entomologists from Asia, whose research has often been neglected by western scientists. This book is an essential reference source for all professionals and students of entomology and related disciplines."--p. [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: Explanation of Terms Used in Entomology by John Bernhard Smith When, some time since, in consequence of continuing demands, the Brooklyn Entomological Society resolved to publish a new edition of its Explanation of Terms used in Entomology, and entrusted the writer and two associates with the task of preparing the same, it was believed that a little revision of definitions, the dropping of a few obsolete terms and the addition of a few lately proposed, would be all that was necessary. It was to be a light task to fill idle time in summer, report to be made in fall. Two years have passed since that time; the associates have dropped by the way; the manuscript contains five times the number of terms in the original "Explanation." and if it is published now, it is not because I believe it to be complete; but because I do not believe it can be made complete except as the result of criticism and voluntary addition by specialists throughout the country. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Entomology To-day the public has come to appreciate that insect life plays a most-important part in the economy of our civilization. Some of the problems which require the work of the trained entomologist are worthy of the highest scientific training and best executive ability. Insects and disease. The modern methods of sanitation for the control of malarial fever and yellow fever involve the control of mosquitoes, which transmit these diseases. More and more the sanitary measures which are making the tropics habitable for the more northern races of man are being made possible by a knowl edge of the relation of insect life to the transmission of disease. Even the common house-fly, formerly considered a mere nuisance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomology This book gives a comprehensive and concise account of insects. Though planned primarily for the student, it is intended also for the general reader. The book was written in an effort to meet the growing demand for a biological treatment of entomology. The existence of several excellent works on the classification of insects (notably Comstock's Manual, Kellogg's American Insects and Sharp's Insects) has enabled the author to omit the multitudinous details of classification and to introduce much material that hitherto has not appeared in text-books. As a rule, only the commonest kinds of insects are referred to, in the text, in order that the reader may easily use the text as a guide to per sonal observation. All the illustrations have been prepared by the author, and such as have been copied from other works are duly credited. To Dr. S. A. Forbes the author is especially indebted for the use of literature, ispecimens and drawings belonging to the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Entomology If the writer shall succeed in introducing this delightful branch of natural history to even a few of those who are surrounded by the bean ful and interesting objects discussed and if in these pages the victim of insect depredations obtains a few hints concerning the vulnerable stages in the lives of his tiny but collectively potent foes, the work will not have been done in vain. In conclusion, I must acknowledge my great indebtedness to the works of Dr. C.V. Riley, U. S. Entomologist, Dr. A. S.
