Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1911, this vintage book contains extracts from the diary of John William Polidori, and chiefly those parts relating to his relationships with Byron, Shelley, and others of the Romantic movement. John William Polidori (7 September 1795 – 24 August 1821) was an English writer and physician famous for his associations with the Romantic movement and for being, as many maintain, the creator of the vampire genre of fantasy fiction. His most notable work was the short story "The Vampyre" (1819). This volume will appeal to those with an interest in the life of Polidori and especially those who he associated with, namely Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Other notable works by this author include: “Cajetan” (1816), “Boadicea” (1816), and “On the Punishment of Death” (1816). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new introduction of the author.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Dr. John William Polidori, 1816: Relating to Byron, Shelley, Etc One of these writings is the text to a volume, published in 1821, entitled Sketches Illustrative of tile Manners and Costumes of France, Switzerland, ana7 Italy, by R. Bridgens. The name of Polidori is not indeed recorded in this book, but I know as a certainty that he was the writer. One of the designs in the volume shows the costume of women at Lerici just about the time when Shelley was staying there, in the closing months of his life, and a noticeable costume it was. Polidori himself - though I am not aware that he ever received any instruction in drawing worth speaking of - had some considerable native gift in sketching faces and figures with lifelike expression; I possess a few examples to prove as much. The Diary shows that he took some serious and intelligent interest in works of art, as well as in literature; and he was clearly a rapid and somewhat caustic judge of character perhaps a correct one. He was a fine, rather romantic looking young man, as evidenced by his portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, accepted from me by that Institution in 1895. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating journey into history and literature, "The Diary of Dr. John William Polidori" is Polidori's account of his travels from London to Switzerland with Lord Byron, an English poet and one of the leading figures of the Romantic Movement in the early 19th century. In the summer of 1816, Lord Byron and his guests, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Godwin (Shelley) and her half-sister Claire Clermont, and Dr. John William Polidori were staying at the Villa Diodati, by Lake Geneva, Switzerland. The group decided to have a friendly competition to see who could write the best horror story. It was the genesis of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and of Polidori's "The Vampyre: A Tale." But the story doesn't end here. Polidori went on to travel through Switzerland and Italy, leaving us with his memoirs-a rich portrait of a time long gone. John William Polidori (1795-1821) was, for a brief period, the personal physician to Lord Byron. His manuscript was published in 1911 by his nephew, William Michael Rossetti ninety years after his uncle's death. "The Diary of Dr. John William Polidori" is one of those rare jewels of literature. At the end of the book, the reader will find a rich index of names and places. This is a new edition of "The Diary of Dr. John William Polidori" originally published in 1911 by Elkin Mathews, of London, England. Part of the project Immortal Literature Series of classic literature, this is a new edition of the classic work published in 1911 - not a facsimile reprint. Obvious typographical errors have been carefully corrected and the entire text has been reset and redesigned by Pen House Editions to enhance readability, while respecting the original edition. About the Author: An English writer and critic, William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919) was the brother of Dante Gabriel and Christina Rossetti, and an original member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He edited, with invaluable explanatory notes, the diaries of his maternal uncle John William Polidori-the fascinating account of the few weeks, in 1816, which were essential to the development of the Romantic Movement, during which Polidori's "The Vampyre: A Tale"-the first vampire novel published in English-and Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" arose from a storytelling competition at the Villa Diodati, in Switzerland.

Book excerpt: 'A most impressive achievement' Michael Holroyd 'Enthralling' Sunday Times 'Masterly' Telegraph _______________________ 'The web of our Life is of mingled Yarn' - John Keats In Young Romantics Daisy Hay shatters the myth of the Romantic poet as a solitary, introspective genius, telling the story of the communal existence of an astonishingly youthful circle. The fiery, generous spirit of Leigh Hunt, radical journalist and editor of The Examiner, took centre stage. He bound together the restless Shelley and his brilliant wife Mary, author of Frankenstein; Mary's feisty step-sister Claire Clairmont, who became Byron's lover and the mother of his child; and Hunt's charismatic sister-in-law Elizabeth Kent. With authority, sparkling prose and constant insight Daisy Hay describes their travels in France, Switzerland and Italy, their artistic triumphs, their headstrong ways, their grievous losses and their devastating tragedies. Young Romantics explores the history of the group, from its inception in Leigh Hunt's prison cell in 1813 to its ultimate disintegration in the years following 1822. It encompasses tales of love, betrayal, sacrifice and friendship, all of which were played out against a background of political turbulence and intense literary creativity. This smouldering turmoil of strained relationships and insular friendships would ferment to inspire the drama of Frankenstein, the heady idealism of Shelley's poetry, and Byron's own self-loathing, self-loving public persona. Above all the characters are rendered on the page with marvellous vitality, and this is a gloriously entrancing and revelatory read, the debut of a young biographer of the highest calibre and enormous promise.

Book excerpt: An authoritative new history of the vampire, two hundred years after it first appeared on the literary scene Published to mark the bicentenary of John Polidori’s publication of The Vampyre, Nick Groom’s detailed new account illuminates the complex history of the iconic creature. The vampire first came to public prominence in the early eighteenth century, when Enlightenment science collided with Eastern European folklore and apparently verified outbreaks of vampirism, capturing the attention of medical researchers, political commentators, social theorists, theologians, and philosophers. Groom accordingly traces the vampire from its role as a monster embodying humankind’s fears, to that of an unlikely hero for the marginalized and excluded in the twenty-first century. Drawing on literary and artistic representations, as well as medical, forensic, empirical, and sociopolitical perspectives, this rich and eerie history presents the vampire as a strikingly complex being that has been used to express the traumas and contradictions of the human condition.
