Book excerpt: A method to recover atmospheric temperature profiles using a ground- based Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer was investigated. The method used a difference form of the radiative transfer equation, a Bomem MR series Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer to collect atmospheric radiance values, and the Phillips Laboratory Expert- assisted User Software (PLEXUS) atmospheric radiance model, to recover an atmospheric temperature profile. The method researched uses radiance values from both the spectrometer measurements and the atmospheric model, along with kernel functions calculated by the atmospheric model as input to a difference form of the radiation transfer equation. From this the change in brightness temperatures was determined. The method assumes that the actual brightness temperature profile is a summation of a standard or reference brightness temperature profile plus some change in the brightness temperature. The brightness temperature profile used by the atmospheric model is the reference brightness temperature profile. Planck's Law was employed to transform the calculated brightness temperature function into a temperature function. A temperature profile was retrieved, although significant differences existed between the recovered temperature profile and a radiosonde recovered temperature profile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work accomplished on the retrieval of stratospheric temperature and density profiles from remote earth limb-view infrared radiation measurements. Temperature or density can be retrieved in a routine manner. A model based on two rotational lines of C02 was developed to retrieve simultaneously both temperature and density. This model is running on a CRAY-1 Computer but needs additional verification. An investigation of alternative methods to calculate infrared transmittance has showed that an interpolation scheme does not work for limb-view geometrics with a subsequent potential savings in computer time of one thousand or better. Though the concept has been proved, the ultimate accuracy of this method has still to be evaluated.

Book excerpt: For more than three decades, the US Standard Atmosphere has been used by researchers and professionals in many areas of aeronautics and atmospheric sciences. It is an idealized, all season average temperature profile of the earth's atmosphere. But today's modern day and sophisticated global applications require more extensive representations of the mean temperature profile. This book is a global augmentation of the climatological tropospheric temperature profiles in the Northern Hemisphere for different latitude belts and seasons. There are 72 mean temperature profile tables from the surface up to 10 kilometers in height that represent the four seasons for different latitudinal belts (5° N, 10° N , 15° N, 20° N, 25° N, 30° N, 35° N, 40° N, 45° N, 50° N, 55° N, 60° N, 65° N, 70° N, 75° N, 80° N, 85° N). The model is based on a neural network algorithm that uses archived radiosonde data, retrieved temperature profiles from remote sensors, and the solar insolation at the top of the earth's atmosphere. It is the most comprehensive book of mean seasonal tropospheric temperature profiles to date. It will be an indispensible reference to the aeronautic and meteorological industries worldwide as well as an easy-to-use guide for climatologists, meteorologists, aeronautic engineers, researchers and aviators.

Book excerpt: "We describe a method of simulating measurements of atmospheric radiances and brightness temperatures in wide-bank window channels (at 11 and 3.7 um) of satellite radiometers. As input the simulation takes vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature and water-vapor mixing ratio, as well as the spectral response functions of the window channels. It models the atmospheric transmittances and integrates the equation of radiative transfer. We demonstrate the use of the method with applications to the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer on the TIROS-N satellite."--p.1.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding contains the technical proceedings of the First International Interactive Workshop on Inversion Methods in Atmospheric Remote Sounding, held in Williamsburg, Virginia, on December 15-17, 1976. The papers review the state of the art in inversion methods used in retrieving information about the atmosphere from remotely sensed data. The mathematical theory of inversion methods is described, together with the application of these methods to the remote sounding of atmospheric temperature, relative humidity, and gaseous and aerosol constituents. Comprised of 21 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to methods for solving problems in radiative transfer and multiple scattering, followed by a discussion on the problem of radiative transfer in a scattering plane-parallel atmosphere. The next section is devoted to the mathematical theory of inversion methods and considers some aspects of the inversion problem in remote sensing, along with the relaxation method for the inverse solution of nonlinear and linear transfer equations. The final section explores inversion methods in gaseous, thermal, and aerosol atmospheres, covering topics such as the Backus-Gilbert theory and its application to retrieval of ozone and temperature profiles; inversion of scattered radiance horizon profiles for gaseous concentrations and aerosol parameters; and inversion of passive microwave remote sensing data from satellites. This monograph will be of interest to scientists from universities, government agencies, and research laboratories.

Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is de voted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 13 contains literature published in 1975 and received before August 15, 1975; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy. We want to acknowledge valuable contributions to this vol ume by Zentralstelle ftir Atomkemenergie-Dokumentation, Leopoldshafen, which supported our ab stracting service by sending us retrospective literature searches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather and Climate on Planets discusses the problems of the meteorology of planets. Planetary meteorology is the study of the regularities of the atmospheres and their thermal regime and dynamics, specifically the properties of the planetary surfaces and the specific features of the interactions between the atmospheres and surfaces. This book contains four chapters and begins with an overview of origin and evolution of the solar system and planetary atmospheres. The introductory chapter describes some basic characteristics of planetary atmospheres, laboratory and numerical modeling of the atmospheric circulation, and the application of remote sounding. The remaining three chapters examine the weather, climate, and other meteorological aspects of planet Venus, Mars, and Jupiter. This book will be of value to meteorologists, astronomers, researchers, and students.
