Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winner Larry McMurtry writes novels set in the American heartland, but his real territory is the heart itself. His gift for writing about women—their love for reckless, hopeless men; their ability to see the good in losers; and their peculiar combination of emotional strength and sudden weakness—makes The Desert Rose the bittersweet, funny, and touching book that it is. Harmony is a Las Vegas showgirl with the best legs in town. At night she's a lead dancer in a gambling casino; during the day she raises peacocks. She throws her love away on second-rate men, but wakes up in the morning full of hope. She's one of a dying breed of dancers, faced with fewer and fewer jobs and an even bleaker future. Yet, she maintains a calm cheerfulness in that arid neon landscape of supermarkets, drive-in wedding chapels, and all-night casinos. While Harmony's star is fading, her beautiful, cynical daughter Pepper's is on the rise. But Harmony remains wistful and optimistic through it all. She is the unexpected blossom in the wasteland, the tough and tender desert rose. Hers is a loving portrait that only Larry McMurtry could render.

Book excerpt: This poignant book about a young woman's experiences during China's Cultural Revolution is in a same genre as the popular local book Tears of the Moon as well as international bestsellers like Wild Swans and Falling Leaves. Weijun Collins was born in China into a prominent and well-educated family. When she was just ten years old her father, once a high-ranking official, was condemned as an enemy of the Communist Party and banished to a labour camp. Weijun struggled to continue her education but her father's 'crime' eventually rebounded on her and she was sent to the Gobi desert for ten years of terrible hardship and misery. laboured in sub-zero temperatures - a virtual slave. Against this background of terrible hardship Weijun managed to teach herself English and eventually escaped from the desert to become a teacher. Her story is layered with a number of romantic episodes: she has a brief unsuccessful marriage to a childhood sweetheart; and a scandalous and ultimately damaging love affair with a much younger man. Weijun was eventually assisted to New Zealand and has begun a new, much happier life. This book gives the reader real insight into the daily lives of ordinary people during this terrible period in China's history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers reflections on a daunting and controversial ethical question: How should we treat the strangers who enter this country illegally? To understand the experience of those directly confronted by this problem, Ananda Rose traveled to the Sonoran desert at the border between the U.S. and Mexico. There she gathered opinions from Minutemen, Border Patrol agents, Catholic nuns, humanitarian air workers, left-wing protestors, ranchers, and other ordinary citizens in southern Arizona. She depicts the results of these interviews as two starkly opposed ideological perspectives: that of religious activists who embrace a biblically-inspired model of hospitality that stresses love of strangers and a "borderless" compassion; and that of law enforcement, which is concerned with safety, security, and strict respect for international borders.

When Rose Macklin is asked to help Alec Thurston, the one man she's ever truly loved, by coming to Palm Desert, California, she doesn't hesitate. He's dying of cancer and needs her help overseeing the sale of his hotel, the Desert Sage Inn, to another hotel group. With her marketing skill and as the owner of a very successful blog, she's his perfect choice to make the sale a smooth transition while ensuring the new owners will maintain the reputation and image of the upscale property after the sale. She arrives to find Alec has summoned two other women to help with the project. Lily Weaver was once Alec's assistant, and Willow Sanchez was like a daughter to him. They join forces to help him, lovingly accepting his nickname for them-the Desert Flowers, similar to the well-known Charlie's Angels of TV fame. When Rose is assigned to work alongside Hank Bowers, an independent consultant to the hotel company's team, she shudders at his reputation as an outgoing guy who always uses sports analogies and is certain they won't get along. But Alec counsels her to give Hank a chance and, later, as they work together as a team, Rose is left to wonder if falling for one another is part of Alec's secret plan even if one of Hank's grown daughters fights the idea. A series for those who love strong women coming together to help each other and someone they love. Be sure to read all the books in the series-The Desert Flowers-Rose, The Desert Flowers-Lily, The Desert Flowers-Willow, and Mistletoe & Holly. Another of Judith Keim's series books celebrating love and families, strong women meeting challenges, and clean women's fiction with a touch of romance-beach reads for all ages with a touch of humor, satisfying twists, and happy endings. Be sure to check out her other delightful books and series that readers adore.

Clare meets James Cameron, an American who has fled to the Middle East to escape his domineering parents. Their love is immediate and passionate, but not without its obstacles. Meanwhile, Sheikh Fariz bin Hani offers her infinite kindness, sensitivity and understanding, but their happiness is marred by the fact that they can never truly be together. The mysterious exoticism of the East, unimagined power and the vast riches of the hot desert sands, change Clare's and Melinda's lives forever in ways that they would never have dreamed possible.

Book excerpt: I was born in a wonderful country Azerbaijan which means The Land of Fires. It’s amazing country which is a mix of different cultures. This multiculturalism is forging the poets and musicians! The most impression I got in my childhood was rock music. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, Grand Funk and many, many others became my musical idols. Long hair and jeans became the symbol of protest against the existing Soviet ideology among youth movement and I was part of it. Beginning from 1998 till 2002 I travelled to many European countries and twice been to USA. My long staying in Montana and in D.C. gave me possibility to describe these brilliant regions and their cordial people in my novel the Desert Rose. I was impressed by meeting with bishop Jim (peace be upon him) and who became one of the main characters in my novel! Being historian I was deeply studying world religions. No religion calling for violence! And it’s not necessarily to be religious for being spiritual! My main characters have many common features with me. They are open – hearted, they love the life and human beings. Despite of their belonging to different nations and religions they are the citizens of the world, and it’s refl ecting my own essence! Each person is a different Universe and I’m quite confi dent that the treasure inside each of us should be revealed early or late!
