At a stated meeting of the New York Historical Society, held at its rooms in the New York University, on Tuesday evening, the 2nd day of April, 1850, the Hon. Luther Bradish, President, presiding. Dr. Alexander H. Stephens announced the death of the Hon. John C. Calhoun, in the following words: Mr. President: --This is a time of gloom. Yesterday, over our public edifices, the national flag, half hoisted, drooped heavily--its stars obscured. A public calamity was indicated. It was the death of Mr. Calhoun. His home, sir, was nearly one thousand miles distant. Who will so far forget the Roman maxim, as to despair of the Republic when there is such sympathy between its remote members? It is an evidence of unity, and every expression of it is a new bond of union. I have risen, Mr. President, to move that the death of John Caldwell Calhoun be entered upon your journal, with the expression of the profound veneration entertained by this Society for his high character, his unsurpassed abilities, and his pre-eminent public services. The name of Calhoun is historical; it ia mete that an historical society should mark its estimate of his character. His was a beacon light to a wide-spread region: lofty, pure, and brilliant. Long the guide of anxious patriotism, it will be seen no more forever. Let it be permitted even to me, sir, to mingle private grief with universal public mourning. While yet a stripling at Yale, I hung upon the first lispings of his young eloquence, and marked with admiration, the intellectual vigor of the new grown Hercules. In after life, College recollections were a cord of friendship between us, no strand of which was ever broken. We are..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring a critical lesson about our nation that is as timely today as ever, Decade of Disunion shows how the country came apart during the enveloping slavery crisis of the 1850s. The Mexican War brought vast new territories to the United States, which precipitated a growing crisis over slavery. The new territories seemed unsuitable for the type of agriculture that depended on slave labor, but they lay south of the line where slavery was permitted by the 1820 Missouri Compromise. The subject of expanding slavery to the new territories became a flash point between North and South. First came the 1850 compromise legislation, which strengthened the fugitive slave law and outraged the North. Then in 1854, Congress repealed the Missouri Compromise altogether, unleashing a violent conflict in “Bleeding Kansas” over whether that territory would become free or slave. The 1857 Dred Scott decision—abrogating any rights of African Americans, enslaved or free—further outraged the North. And John Brown’s ill-planned 1859 attack at the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry stirred anger and fear throughout the South. Through a decade, South Carolina, whose economy depended heavily on slave labor, struggled over whether to secede in a stand-alone act of defiance or to do so only in conjunction with other states. Meanwhile, Massachusetts became the country’s antislavery epicenter but debated whether the Constitution was worth saving in the effort to abolish bondage. Both states widened the divide between North and South until disunion became inevitable. Then, in December 1860, in the wake of the Lincoln election, South Carolina finally seceded, leading the South out of the Union. Beginning with the deaths of the great second-generation figures of American history—Calhoun, Webster, and Clay—Decade of Disunion tells the story of this great American struggle through the aims, fears, and maneuvers of the subsequent prominent figures at the center of the drama, with particular attention to the key players from Massachusetts and South Carolina. This history is a sobering reminder that democracy is not self-sustaining—it must be constantly and carefully tended.

Book excerpt: A new biography of the intellectual father of Southern secession—the man who set the scene for the Civil War, and whose political legacy still shapes America today. John C. Calhoun is among the most notorious and enigmatic figures in American political history. First elected to Congress in 1810, Calhoun went on to serve as secretary of war and vice president. But he is perhaps most known for arguing in favor of slavery as a "positive good" and for his famous doctrine of "state interposition," which laid the groundwork for the South to secede from the Union—and arguably set the nation on course for civil war. Calhoun has catapulted back into the public eye in recent years, as some observers connected the strain of radical politics he developed to the tactics and extremism of the modern Far Right, and as protests over racial injustice have focused on his legacy. In this revelatory biographical study, historian Robert Elder shows that Calhoun is even more broadly significant than these events suggest, and that his story is crucial for understanding the political climate in which we find ourselves today. By excising Calhoun from the mainstream of American history, he argues, we have been left with a distorted understanding of our past and no way to explain our present.
