Book excerpt: Heather Renae Acquistapace The Day the Devil Smiled Synopsis There is only one thing on Jesus Christs mind as He and His twelve disciples eat the Passover meal in Jerusalem: the salvation of mankind. The Son of God knows that the only way for humanity to be able to live with Him in eternity will be for Him to die to pay for the punishment of all the sins of time. Jesus longs to save the people, but He does not want to go through the bloody, torturous death that awaits Him. The Son of God is guarded by angels, two of which are Iceil and Ameron. The two angels, as well as many others, continually fight the demons trying to intercept the Mighty Ones plan of salvation. Tyzar, the demonic leader of the dark spirits in Jerusalem, endlessly tries to disrupt Jesuss mission and is helped by Sysen, a demon specialized in controlling human minds. During the Passover meal, Jesus tries to prepare His disciples for the trying hours before them, but the demons in the room cause the men to be confused by the Masters words. Sysen takes control of one mans mind, Judas Iscariot, and deceives him into killing himself later on in the story. The men then travel to the Mount of Olives where Jesus prays and asks God if there is another way to save the people of the world. The Devil meets Jesus in the garden and tries to convince Him that Gods plan will fail. The time of prayer is agonizingly difficult as Jesuss inward conflict builds with each deceptive word from Satan. After hours of prayer, the Lord of Heaven and Earth tells Jesus to continue with the plan of salvation, and He obeys. When Jesus is done praying, He is arrested by temple guards, tied, and taken before the religious leaders. The demons try to make chaos and deceive the people. The angels fight them to keep the disciples safe. Jesus has angered the Jewish leaders in the past and has claimed He is the Son of God, a crime punishable by death. After an illegal trial, Jesus is taken before the Roman governor of Jerusalem, Pontius Pilate, the only authority who can sentence someone to death. The governor does not find Jesus guilty. After questioning Him for a time, he sends the Prisoner to Herod Antipas, the governor of where Jesus war born; a mob follows their every move. Upon seeing Jesus, Herod demands Him to perform a miracle, but when Jesus does not obey, He is sent back to Pilate. The Roman does not want to kill the innocent Man. Therefore, he allows the Jews to pick between two prisoners, Jesus and a murderous revolutionary, to be set free, as he does once every year to be in favor with the people. The Jews choose the revolutionary and demand Jesuss death. Satan whispers in Pilates ear to have Jesus flogged to satisfy the crowd and the Roman, still unwilling to kill Jesus and believing the Devils advice is the solution, orders for the beating to commence. As Jesuss body is brutally slashed open with whips, the angels face the demons wanting to torment Christs spirit alongside the floggers. Christ is then presented to the Jews once more, but the cry for His death is louder still. Pilate, not wanting the people to become a riot, surrenders and orders Jesus to be put to death. The Son of God is followed by a mob to Golgotha and nailed to a cross. Before He dies, all the sins of mankind come onto Jesus, and for the first time, Christ feels separated from God. When Jesus dies, the Devil smiles, but the sins are extinguished because of Jesuss sacrifice. Three days after Jesus is killed, the Holy Spirit brings Him back to life, obtaining victory for the angels and destruction for the demons. Jesus appears before His followers a number of times and forty days after His death ascends into Heaven along with Iceil, Ameron, and a few other angels. Jesus sits down at the right hand of God, humanity is saved, and the demonic forces lose yet again another spic battle.

Leo Rossi is one of those Knights. A young Italian Catholic boy from the blue-collar Los Angeles port town of San Pedro, he tripped into an impossible dream and helped mega stars such as Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, The Beach Boys, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Chaka Khan, Billy Idol, and many more. Book excerpt: NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • The Washington Post • Publishers Weekly New Hyde Hospital’s psychiatric ward has a new resident. It also has a very, very old one. Pepper is a rambunctious big man, minor-league troublemaker, working-class hero (in his own mind), and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He’s not mentally ill, but that doesn’t seem to matter. He is accused of a crime he can’t quite square with his memory. In the darkness of his room on his first night, he’s visited by a terrifying creature with the body of an old man and the head of a bison who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It’s no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper rallies three other inmates in a plot to fight back: Dorry, an octogenarian schizophrenic who’s been on the ward for decades and knows all its secrets; Coffee, an African immigrant with severe OCD, who tries desperately to send alarms to the outside world; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl who acts as the group’s enforcer. Battling the pill-pushing staff, one another, and their own minds, they try to kill the monster that’s stalking them. But can the Devil die? The Devil in Silver brilliantly brings together the compelling themes that spark all of Victor LaValle’s radiant fiction: faith, race, class, madness, and our relationship with the unseen and the uncanny. More than that, it’s a thrillingly suspenseful work of literary horror about friendship, love, and the courage to slay our own demons. Praise for The Devil in Silver “A fearless exploration of America’s heart of darkness . . . a dizzying high-wire act.”—The Washington Post “LaValle never writes the same book and his recent is a stunner. . . . Fantastical, hellish and hilarious.”—Los Angeles Times “It’s simply too bighearted, too gentle, too kind, too culturally observant and too idiosyncratic to squash into the small cupboard of any one genre, or even two.”—The New York Times Book Review “Embeds a sophisticated critique of contemporary America’s inhumane treatment of madness in a fast-paced story that is by turns horrifying, suspenseful, and comic.”—The Boston Globe “LaValle uses the thrills of horror to draw attention to timely matters. And he does so without sucking the joy out of the genre. . . . A striking and original American novelist.”—The New Republic

At twenty-nine, the tough-skinned Staten Island native's only excitement comes from . . . well, not much. A fresh pack of American Spirits, maybe, or a discreet dash of coke before work. If something doesn't change soon, she'll end up a "lifer" at the Narrows, the faux-swank bar where she works one long night after another. But just like the island, the Narrows has its seamy side. After work one night, Maureen walks in on a tryst between her co-worker Dennis and Frank Sebastian, a silver-haired politico. When Sebastian demands her silence, Maureen is more than happy to forget what she's seen—until Dennis turns up dead on the train tracks the next morning. The murder sends Maureen careening out of her stultifying routine and into fast-deepening trouble. Soon she's on the run through the seedy underbelly of the borough, desperate to stop Sebastian before Dennis's fate becomes her own. With The Devil She Knows, Bill Loehfelm has written a pitch-black thriller in a fresh, compulsively readable voice, with pages that turn themselves. This is the real deal: a breakout novel by a writer whom Publishers Weekly has praised for his "superb prose and psychological insights."

Book excerpt: Author Dhrittiman Neogi's mythology-based books and his latest book, Sin, on homophobia and attacking decriminalization of section 377 have met with agitations from the LGBTQ community. But the fire is too close to home as his son, Neil, has brought with him his old college friend, childless Rik, who is disgruntled with his married life. As per a social media post, they are planning same-sex surrogacy in a neighbouring country where the laws are a bit lax. Soon, led by another social media post, Rik's wife, Shreya, follows them to the writer's cottage, Whispering Pines, in the picturesque hills of Bagora. After a few days, she goes missing, and the suspicion falls on Neil and Rik. In an investigation in which a few decomposed bones are the only evidence, as Ryan Ray and Inspector Norbu Sherpa try to penetrate the web of deceit to reach the truth, will it lead to an entirely new undiscovered crime, or will they fail to know who the devil has used as his surrogate to perpetuate evil?"

Book excerpt: In The Devil's Guide to Hollywood, bestselling author and legendary bad-boy screenwriter Joe Eszterhas tells everything he knows about the industry, its players and screenwriting itself—from the first blank sheet of paper in the Olivetti to the size of the credit on the one-sheet. "There's just one hunk of funny anecdote after another, quotes from everyone who ever mattered in the movie biz, and the thing is jam-packed with screenwriterly advice. Plus it's hilariously funny, ribald, sexy and brilliant."—Liz Smith Often practical and always entertaining, The Devil's Guide to Hollywood distills everything one of Hollywood's most accomplished screenwriters knows about the business, from writing advice to negotiation tricks, from the wisdom of past players to the feuds of current ones. Eszterhas has selected his personal pantheon of the most loved and loathed players in the business and treats the reader to a treasure trove of stories, quotes and wisdom from those luminaries, who include William Goldman (loathes) and Zsa Zsa Gabor (loves). The Devil's Guide to Hollywood could only have been written by someone who loves the business as much as Eszterhas does—but who also has its number. "Eszterhas delivers a dishy, catty mix of reminiscences and Hollywood trivia...his forte is skewering sycophants and phonies in this opinionated showcase of the underside of Hollywood life."—Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize “A must-read, cannot-put-down history.” — Thomas Friedman, New York Times Arguably the most important American lawyer of the twentieth century, Thurgood Marshall was on the verge of bringing the landmark suit Brown v. Board of Education before the U.S. Supreme Court when he became embroiled in a case that threatened to change the course of the civil rights movement and cost him his life. In 1949, Florida's orange industry was booming, and citrus barons got rich on the backs of cheap Jim Crow labor with the help of Sheriff Willis V. McCall, who ruled Lake County with murderous resolve. When a white seventeen-year-old girl cried rape, McCall pursued four young black men who dared envision a future for themselves beyond the groves. The Ku Klux Klan joined the hunt, hell-bent on lynching the men who came to be known as "the Groveland Boys." Associates thought it was suicidal for Marshall to wade into the "Florida Terror," but the young lawyer would not shrink from the fight despite continuous death threats against him. Drawing on a wealth of never-before-published material, including the FBI's unredacted Groveland case files, as well as unprecedented access to the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund files, Gilbert King shines new light on this remarkable civil rights crusader.
