Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of European Civilization This inquiry into the social, mental and religious evolution of early Europe owes its origin to an accident. Although the subject has always possessed a certain charm for my mind, this book is directly due to an invitation which I received some years ago to read a paper before a scientific society. Upon that occasion I put together some notes on parallels presented by certain phases of the growth of thought in India, Greece and Italy. The late Professor Max Muller, who presided, had previously taken an interest in the subject proposed, and at the time expressed approval of the way in which it was treated. Professor Heinrich Stein, the well-known Continental scholar, and the late Dr. Cornelis P. Tiele, Professor of the history of religions in the University of Leyden, who saw the essay in print, also endorsed the views advanced, while friends in England whose opinions command consideration suggested that the paper might with advantage be expanded into a book. Since then I have followed up this line of research from time to time, in the face of formidable difficulties, chiefly from want of convenient access to a well-equipped library. Meanwhile circumstances, entirely independent of this pursuit, led me to explore some Slavonic languages and institutions; the results added a zest to my investigation in this department of thought. For, as I proceeded, I found that the ideas and beliefs of the Slavs threw a flood of light upon some points which were otherwise obscure. Life in America is a transplanted European life. Its development here has been largely determined by new world conditions, but its origins were in Europe or even in that older world about the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. As civilization has been handed on from race to race during the ages, each people has added its own peculiar contribution to it. Primitive men who lived before the dawn of history, the earliest civilized nations of the Old East, the Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medieval Civilization: Selected Studies From European Authors This book is offered as a partial solution of the problem which confronts every instructor in medieval history. Pressing library needs usually prevent him from securing an adequate supply of duplicate books for supplementary readings. In the rare cases in which the instructor suc ceeds in securing books, many works of great value still remain inaccessible to the average student because he cannot use the continental languages. This book has been prepared in the belief that it will enable the instruc tor to assign and to quiz all members of the class upon the same supplementary readings, and that it will at the same time permit the students to utilize, in a fuller mea sure, the results oi European scholarship in the medieval field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Civilization an Introduction to Modern History Ask yourself as you begin reading this book what is the first thing in life that-you can remember. Probably the event hap pened not more than ten or twelve years ago. Your The sources father and mother cannot go back, in memory more than of our three or four times as many years as that; and practically knowledge no man or woman alive to - day can recall things that happened a hundred years ago. And yet, at the very beginning of this book, you must imagine that your memory extends ov'er thou sands and thousands of years, for the beginning of man's history belongs to a time as long ago as that. Our knowledge of the story of man's existence on earth has been gathered slowly. Here and there in all parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, a few bones of men and of animals, a few spearheads and arrowheads, a few fragments of clothing and cooking utensils have been found. From these, and from the rude pictures which men scratched on stones thousands of years ago, we have been able to piece together a record which carries back the story of man's life those thousands of years; We have learned something about his. Method of making himself shelter and clothing, something about the way he fought with the wild animals of the forest, something, about the way he gathered his food and fed and reared his children. We know the steps by which, from a condition like that'of a wild animal, he climbed up to the place which he occupies on earth to-day'.
