Download or read book Porch Dogs written by Nell Dickerson and published by Blair. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nell Dickerson fondly recalls childhood nights on the sleeping porch of her grandparents? Mississippi Delta home?the sounds of katydids, cicadas, and tree frogs, the merciful breeze from the overhead fan. But during the heat of the day, the family sought refuge indoors, leaving the dog to his lonely vigil. “I felt like he understood that the porch was the gateway between inside and outside and that it was his duty to keep sentry there in case someone wanted to pass,” she recalls. Years later, Dickerson noticed that few new homes had porches, their residents increasingly dependent on air conditioning. “We Southerners used to be social,” she notes. “Now, we risk losing what makes us Southern: porch sitting. But there is hope. Our dogs maintain the tradition.” Dickerson weaves her passion for historic preservation?first detailed in her 2011 book, Gone: A Photographic Plea for Preservation?into a fun, uplifting photographic collection that perfectly captures a Southern tradition. Dickerson?s incomparable photographs introduce an unforgettable variety of “house dogs,” “yard dogs,” “shop dogs,” “swing dogs,” “bench dogs,” “top dogs,” “under dogs,” and “dock dogs.”" --from the publisher.

Book Synopsis Otto Janarian by : William Singleton
Download or read book Otto Janarian written by William Singleton and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Janarian: Talking While Black is a fictional account of the life experiences of Otto Janarian as told to Earl Martin and you. In chronicling some of Ottos experiences, the author defines todays racial animus as a continuation of the past. Despite the progress that has been made in that area, the author insists that police behavior has been one of the toughest to temper. Many racial issues, although not eliminated, have become subtle . . . less so with police interaction. Just as blacks are expected to condemn their own when guilty, the police must also rid their departments of the bad apples. The author emphasizes that not all people react to turmoil in the same manner. Even the mildest person may find the need to strike back.
Book Synopsis To Understand a Cat by : Sam S. Rakover
Download or read book To Understand a Cat written by Sam S. Rakover and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand a cat: methodology and philosophy rests on the realization that the everyday behavior of a cat (but other animals too) should be understood through a new approach, namely methodological dualism. It appeals to mechanistic explanation models and to mentalistic explanation models. It puts up the methodological idea that these models have to be combined in one theoretical structure according to the scientific game-rules. This approach shows that specific mentalistic explanations are generated from explanation models or schemes, which meet the demands of the scientific games-rules; and it proposes a new theoretical structure called the multi-explanation theory to generate particular theories, which provide us with efficient explanations for behavioral phenomena. The book delves deep into anthropomorphism, and the complex question of whether a cat has consciousness and free will, and examines the intricate relations of the mental, the computational, and the neurophysiological.(Series A)

Book Synopsis Help Mom with the Dishes by : Albert Koch
Download or read book Help Mom with the Dishes written by Albert Koch and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-09 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of Northwest Indiana's Calumet Region sits Whiting, Indiana. Born and raised in this "industrial Mayberry," author Albert R. Koch relives his experiences in this small town and beyond through this refreshing collection of essays. Help Mom with the Dishes is a journey through Koch's life, featuring people, places, and extraordinary moments experienced by a not-so-ordinary guy. These episodes convey the wonder of youth, the potency of humor, the power of learning, and the poignancy of emotions. For Koch, what happens in the past provides direction for the future. One can decide to either live life looking in the rearview mirror or focus on what lies ahead. One can use life experiences to strengthen and grow, or be satisfied with a mediocre life. Early on, Koch's choice is to "Help Mom with the dishes." Viewed through the parade of seasons, these distinctive, exceptional moments during Koch's continual quest for understanding and meaning are recalled with thoughtful, reflective insight-from classroom to factory, factory to campus, campus to classroom. Over that time, he's learned an important lesson: The triumph over sadness is not easy. It requires an unflinching belief in the goodness of people, a positive sense of humor, and perhaps, too, a little faith and reverence for things we cannot see.
