Book excerpt: A highly visual exploration of diagrams and data that helps you understand how "maps" are part of everyday thinking, how they tell stories, and how they can reframe your point of view, from Stanford University's world-renowned d.school. “This book is the ultimate legend to mapping all kinds of data.”—Jessica Hagy, Webby Award-winning blogger of Indexed and author of How to Be Interesting (In Ten Simple Steps) Maps aren’t just geographic, they are also infographic and include all types of frameworks and diagrams. Any figure that sorts data visually and presents it spatially is a map. Maps are ways of organizing information and figuring out what’s important. Even stories can be mapped! The Secret Language of Maps provides a simple framework to deconstruct existing maps and then shows you how to create your own. An embedded mystery story about a woman who investigates the disappearance of an old high school friend illustrates how to use different maps to make sense of all types of information. Colorful illustrations bring the story to life and demonstrate how the fictional character’s collection of data, properly organized and “mapped,” leads her to solve the mystery of her friend’s disappearance. You’ll learn how to gather data, organize it, and present it to an audience. You’ll also learn how to view the many maps that swirl around our daily lives with a critical eye, aware of the forces that are in play for every creator.

Book Synopsis New York Design at Home by : Anthony Iannacci
Download or read book New York Design at Home written by Anthony Iannacci and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic tour through designers’ own spaces, from a Greenwich Village town home to a Park Slope brownstone and beyond. Designers’ homes often serve as laboratories where they are free to experiment. These spaces are filled with the designer’s most personal and cherished objects, furnishings, and artwork that are concentrated expressions of their style and interests. New York Design at Home profiles 27 homes and looks at how these creative professionals—among them David Gresham, Ellen Hanson, Benjamin Pardo, Ariel Ashe, and many more—approach design in their personal space. Like most New York City residents, they are decorating with much smaller budgets than they have on their work projects, but they find creative ways to deal with tiny bathrooms, awkward and unusable kitchens, and shared living spaces. Photographed by Noe DeWitt, New York Design at Home highlights the carefully considered details within each interior—the Pablo Picasso painting reproduced as wallpaper, the kitchen utensils on display, textiles that provide pops of color in an otherwise monochromatic space—and captures the creative essence of these homes with new, never-before-published images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DECORATING To the growing list of how-to books on curtains and blinds (e.g., Yvonne Rees's Quick and Easy Curtains and Blinds, LJ 1/96, and Carol Parks's Complete Book of Window Treatments and Curtains, Lark, 1994), Luke brings her expertise as head of a soft furnishings school. She begins each book with clear, well-illustrated instructions on basics such as sewing techniques, measuring, equipment, and set-up. She then proceeds with directions for the simplest treatments unlined curtains and roller blinds continues with more complicated designs such as interlined drapes and Austrian blinds and concludes with embellishments and decorations. A glossary and care instructions are also included. Missing are illustrations of the various hardware used for curtain and shade hangings that is included in Parks's book, which prevents these books from being truly comprehensive. Still, these are solid additions where more window treatment instruction books are needed.-
