Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco Culture in Connecticut At the beginning of the nineteenth century the increasing popularity of cigars and the introduction of the Broadleaf tobacco induced a heavy expansion of acreage, but since no official statistics were kept, the extent of the increase cannot be stated. The first official figures which Show the size of the industry in the state are in the Federal Census of 1840. According to this, there were pounds of tobacco raised in New England in 1839. Assuming a yield of pounds to the acre, which was the average annual yield of the first two decades for which we have acreage records, we may estimate that only about 380 acres were planted to tobacco in Connecticut and Massachusetts in 1839. In 1849 production had increased to pounds. The next decade saw tremendous gain so that there Was more than six times as much tobacco produced in 1859 as in 1849 - about acres. This wave of expansion continued until after the Civil War. Beginning with 1862 there are official records showing the number of acres of tobacco cultivated, as well as the pounds produced each year. These figures are assembled in Table 11. They show a fairly steady pro duction of 6, 000 to acres annually up to the end of the century. Then follows a gradual rise until the outbreak of the World War, and rapid expansion during and shortly after the war period, culminating in the peak of acres in 1921. A violent drop came in 1925 followed by still further drastic reductions in 1932 and 1933. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from White Burley Tobacco: Experiments and Cultural Directions The grades should be evenly classed while tying; all long leaves should be tied separately from the short ones. This will make, from each grade, two or three sub-grades. It is only necessary, however, to keep the grades separate. Farmers often do not understand why their tobacco does not bring the same price as their neighbors' when their tobacco is of equal quality, but this state of affairs is easily answered after examining the tobacco of the different growers as placed on the market. It may be seen that one grower has graded and classed his tobacco more carefully, making his better grades Show off to better advantage and thus obtaining a higher price for them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobacco Leaf, Its Culture and Cure, Marketing and Manufacture: A Practical Handbook on the Most Approved Methods in Growing, Harvesting, Curing, Packing and Selling Tobacco, Also of Tabacco Manufacture The object of the authors of this work is to give a comprehensive account of the tobacco industry in the United States, and its relations to other countries. Great efforts have been put forth to make exact and complete the directions for the culture, curing and marketing of the different kinds of leaf. The aim has been to make every chapter in the first three parts of the work essentially complete though it has not been possible, in our limited space, to undertake a technical description of all the intricate and manifold processes of manufacturing tobacco. The chapter on manures and fertilizers has been prepared with extraordinary care and fullness, owing to prevailing misconceptions upon this subject among both growers and the trade. The senior author has devoted years to the collection of facts and methods pertaining to the Heavy Shipping, Bright, Burley and Perique tobaccos, and has carefully verified disputed points by experimenting on his own plantation.
