Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cultivation and Manufacture of Tea Three years' further experience, and visiting two Tea dis tricts I had not seen before, have enabled me to amend what ever was faulty in the First Edition. The whole has been revised, and much new matter is added throughout. A new Chapter at the end on the Past, the Present, and the Future of Indian Tea will, it is hoped, be found interesting. An Index (a great want to the First Edition) is added, so that all infor mation on any point can be at once found. The manufac ture of Green Tea, of which I was ignorant when I last wrote, is given, and the advisability of that manufacture is discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Report on Tea-Raising in South Carolina, 1893 The present experimentation owes its undertaking to the belief that the previous trials to produce American tea were arrested before reach ing definite conclusions; that more careful cultivation and preparation, which might be the result of a lengthier local observation, and the sub sequent production of a higher class of teas, might reverse the generally entertained opinion that, as an industry, the cultivation of tea in this country must always prove a failure; and that, if successful, this new field for agricultural enterprise would furnish a wide and comparatively easy outdoor employment for many who are unequal to those rougher operations whose accomplishment under a summer's sun can be borne by but few in this climate. Download or read book A Text Book on the Chemistry and Agriculture of Tea written by M. Kelway Bamber and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book on the Chemistry and Agriculture of Tea: Including the Growth and Manufacture In this work on the Chemistry and Agriculture of Tea, an endeavour has been made, without entering into the minute details of cultivation, &c., to lay before the Planter the main chemical and physical facts affecting all the processes included in the cultivation and manufacture, and to point out, where necessary, the means that may be adopted to increase or modify the natural influences at work. A brief account is given of the original introduction of the plant from China as collated from Ball's "Cultivation and Manufacture of Tea," and Fortune's "Wanderings in China," and the discovery of the Indigenous Variety in Assam; also of the soils on which it is grown in the former country, in order to contrast them with those which have been selected for its growth in India. The functions of the various parts of plants and their importance in the vegetable economy arc fully dealt with to point out the effects of plucking, pruning and root cutting, and to show the necessity of performing these operations on scientific principles as well as in a practical manner. As this book is chiefly the outcome of the investigations on tea soils and manures in 1891 and manufacture in 1892, it will, probably be expected that certain manures will be recommended for application to particular soils, and as far as possible this has been done; but the experiments, which have been made, have not been sufficiently satisfactory, or conducted over a period long enough.to warrant any more definite statements on this subject. The composition and relative value of different kinds of manure (chiefly those procurable in India) have been given to assist the planter in selecting those, which, if employed, would yield the most satisfactory results, and to prevent the useless expenditure of money on unsuitable material. In dealing with the manufacture, I have necessarily been somewhat brief, as the experience that can be gained in only one season, and in a single district, is not sufficiently large to enable me to speak confidently on every phase of this subject in regard to all the districts where tea is grown, especially as climatic influences so largely affect the various processes employed; the chemical changes however induced in the manufacture have been explained, which should enable the planter to modify the latter according to his surroundings, and as his own experience may suggest.
