Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cubs were at the end of the best five-season run of any team in history. The team featured Three Finger Brown, the famed double play combination of Tinker to Evers to Chance, and the other players who together won 530 games in the 1906-1910 seasons. They won four National League pennants and were the first team to win consecutive World Series, in 1907 and 1908. After winning 104 games in 1909 and finishing second in the League, the Cubs came back in 1910 to win the pennant again--they seemed unstoppable. Going into the World Series, the Cubs--favored to win--were at the end of a great run and the Philadelphia A's were at the start of one. This book tells the story of the changing of the guard in baseball in 1910, and how these two great teams assembled. The narrative takes in the history of early 20th century baseball, featuring men like Ben Shibe, Connie Mack, Eddie Collins, Frank Baker, Chief Bender, and many others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cubs dynasty founded on fastballs and fisticuffs. Unlike today's Chicago Cubs, the Cubs of 1906-1910 were not at all lovable, and certainly did not always display traits customarily linked with a winning team. Their manager would brawl with his own players, and the players brawled with each other. Their second baseman and shortstop hated each other and didn't speak for years. Their best pitcher pitched with a mutilated hand. Their star catcher got into a spat with management and left the team for a year to play professional billiards. Their manager over time grew to despise the team owner. Yet, this group of brawlers, bickerers, and battlers dominated the National League and established a baseball dynasty, winning four National League pennants and two world championships in 5 years. Author Gary D. Santella follows the story of a team whose toughness and tenacity was a fitting reflection of early twentieth-century Chicago.

Book excerpt: "Erma Bombeck meets Ernest Hemingway." That’s how a friend described his impressions of Bob Rich’s stories. You may find yourself agreeing as you read these entertaining tales about the adventures of an avid sportsman and entrepreneur told with the light touch of a humorist. Bob Rich has always been a gamer, from his first hockey games as a kid on the ice rinks of Buffalo through his adult life on the high seas in pursuit of record sport fish. Games have defined him in business, sports, and life. In this collection of colorful vignettes spanning four decades, Rich recounts some of the major highlights of his sporting life and his career. Western New Yorkers will be especially interested in his discussion of his activities in the local community: pioneering the art of purchasing the naming rights for a professional football stadium—Rich Stadium—where the Buffalo Bills play; buying and selling a National Hockey League franchise—the Buffalo Sabres—twice; and pursuing the dream of Major League Baseball in his hometown, including behind-the-scene glimpses of Robert Redford’s The Natural, which was filmed in Buffalo. Beyond Western New York, Bob describes fishing trips around the world in pursuit of trout with the president of the United States and in search of a thousand-pound blue marlin known as a grander, as well as swimming around Key West, and much more. The combination of vivid characters, intriguing storylines, and Bob Rich’s easy, flowing conversational style of writing make this an appealing and enjoyable read. From the Hardcover edition.

Book Synopsis Kumba Africa by : Sampson Ejike Odum
Download or read book Kumba Africa written by Sampson Ejike Odum and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘KUMBA AFRICA’, is a compilation of African Short Stories written as fiction by Sampson Ejike Odum, nostalgically taking our memory back several thousands of years ago in Africa, reminding us about our past heritage. It digs deep into the traditional life style of the Africans of old, their beliefs, their leadership, their courage, their culture, their wars, their defeat and their victories long before the emergence of the white man on the soil of Africa. As a talented writer of rich resource and superior creativity, armed with in-depth knowledge of different cultures and traditions in Africa, the Author throws light on the rich cultural heritage of the people of Africa when civilization was yet unknown to the people. The book reminds the readers that the Africans of old kept their pride and still enjoyed their own lives. They celebrated victories when wars were won, enjoyed their New yam festivals and villages engaged themselves in seasonal wrestling contest etc; Early morning during harmattan season, they gathered firewood and made fire inside their small huts to hit up their bodies from the chilling cold of the harmattan. That was the Africa of old we will always remember. In Africa today, the story have changed. The people now enjoy civilized cultures made possible by the influence of the white man through his scientific and technological process. Yet there are some uncivilized places in Africa whose people haven’t tested or felt the impact of civilization. These people still maintain their ancient traditions and culture. In everything, we believe that days when people paraded barefooted in Africa to the swarmp to tap palm wine and fetch firewood from there farms are almost fading away. The huts are now gradually been replaced with houses built of blocks and beautiful roofs. Thanks to modern civilization. Donkeys and camels are no longer used for carrying heavy loads for merchants. They are now been replaced by heavy trucks and lorries. African traditional methods of healing are now been substituted by hospitals. In all these, I will always love and remember Africa, the home of my birth and must respect her cultures and traditions as an AFRICAN AUTHOR.

Download or read book Journey Into the Land of Trials written by Manley F. Cobia and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time he set out for Texas, Davy Crockett was already a national celebrity. The United States congressman encouraged his reputation as a wild man for political purposes, but by 1834 he had written an autobiography to counteract some of the more unpleasant popular notions of his personality. Since Crockett's death in 1836, history has continued to foster these two divergent personas while obscuring the man behind the legend. In Journey into the Land of Trials, Manley F. Cobia Jr. offers a portrait of the authentic Davy Crockett. Cobia's detailed account of Crockett's trip from Tennessee that ultimately led to his death at the Alamo reveals how modern historians along with images in the popular media have revised the historical record on this important individual. Stunning portraits of the key players in Crockett's real-life drama illustrate this thoroughly researched volume. For students of history and casual readers, Cobia's work is an enlightening glimpse into the man who continues to inspire patriotic myths even today -- and the ever-changing lens through which we understand our past.
