Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every true Christian longs to be closer in their relationship to Jesus Christ, and obtain a more intimate communion with God. This is the point of this puritan devotional. Herle has taken the role of a preacher, and presented the preaching of the Gospel, particularly the passion and death of Christ, in a devotional manner. What is a devotional? A devotional is akin to the meditative aspects of a sermon (direct application to the self) and how the text launches the reader into their own meditations (how it applies to “me” personally) as directly applied to the soul. Devotionals, like this one, do this step by step, one day at a time. Each chapter is a respective day’s meditation. In this work, there are 41 devotionals on the passion and death of Christ, with a concluding meditation on the resurrection; that Christ is a dying and rising Savior. In addition, Herle thought it important to add into each devotional a kind of ending prayer. Each day there are two or three prayers linked to the devotionals that allow you to become more thoughtful about these important biblical points as they relate to what happened to Jesus, what he did for his people, and how they can be prayed back to him for the soul’s edification and benefit. The goal in this devotional is to meditate and consider the passion of the Lord Jesus (from the Garden of Gethsemane to his death at Golgotha), and then consider what happened on the cross as he is nailed there dying for sinners. These devotionals work themselves out daily. Readers would draw the most virtue from this work, and from Jesus Christ, if they deal with one chapter each day for 41 days. But they are only as helpful as they are thoughtful and dedicated about considering them. Devotionals are not about simply flexing one’s theological muscles each day. It is primarily to gain the real blessing of the Spirit, further conformity to the image of Jesus Christ, and a deeper fellowship with the Father as you come to understand the passion of Christ, and his death on the cross in redeeming sinners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Stations of the Cross, as with many forms of devotional within the Catholic Church, has developed over the centuries. The practice of walking the Via Dolorosa began with pilgrims to the Holy Land in Jerusalem during the Crusades and was brought back to the local parish churches by those pilgrims and crusaders. St. Alphonsus Liguouri authored a standard form in the 1700's that continues to be used in parishes today. In this booklet, I have tried to preserve some of those traditional aspects, while also adding verses of scripture and meditations to aid in our reconciliation with our loving Father. This can be used as an individual or guided group devotional and is meant not just for the Lenten season but can be used anytime during the Church year.

Book excerpt: In 1914, Luisa writes in a letter to the now Saint, Annibale M. di Francia: “I am finally sending you this handwritten copy of The Hours of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. May it all be for His greater Glory. I have also enclosed a few pages where I describe the effects and the beautiful promises that Jesus makes to everyone who meditates these Hours of the Passion. I believe that if whoever meditates on them is a sinner, he will convert; if he is imperfect, he will become perfect; if he is holy, he will become holier; if he is tempted, he will find victory; if suffering, he will find strength, medicine, and comfort in these Hours; if weak and poor, he will find a spiritual food and a mirror in which to look at himself continually and so become beautiful and similar to Jesus, our model”.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The type of faith transmitted by Susanna Tamaro, as she contemplates the fourteen stations of the cross, is not one that has risen beyond the lost path of the world. Instead, at the depth of Tamaro's insight and contemplation, is love for Love, and a desire to follow the small path that leads directly to Christ. As she helps to revive the great drama of human history- death on a cross by the God Who is Life- she proposes to readers a lifestyle that removes all obstacles of the world through empowered faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A perfect complement to the movie, The Passion of The Christ, this book presents reflections that will enable the reader to focus deeply on the true meaning of the Passion. In his famous spiritual classic, The Imitation of Christ, Thomas À Kempis reminds the reader that in order to become a follower of Christ one must imitate his life, and to accomplish this he adds: "Let it then be our main concern to meditate on the life of Jesus Christ. It is impossible to imitate Christ without first knowing him, and the best way of getting to know him is by meditating on his life as it is described in the four Gospels." Thus, in this wonderful meditation book, perfect for Lent, or any time of the year, the great spiritual writer and monk gives profound, short reflections on Gospel passages about the passion and death of Christ. Each chapter, focusing on a specific aspect of the Passion of Our Lord, gives a prayer, a meditation and spiritual advice and closes with another short prayer. Very much in the same style as his The Imitation of Christ, this book covers the entire Passion, and makes great spiritual reading for anyone. Illustrated.

Because through the cross of Christ, we can begin to comprehend God’s all-consuming love for us. The short reflections in this book are taken from homilies presented by renounced evangelist Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa on Good Friday in St. Peter’s Basilica. Fr. Cantalamessa, who has been the preacher of the Papal Household since 1980, unfolds for us the mystery and the power of the cross. By willingly embracing the cross for our sake and then rising from the dead, Jesus has brought us salvation, healing, mercy, and the hope of eternal life. As Fr. Cantalamessa contemplates the intensity and reality of Christ’s love for us, he also shows us how to respond wholeheartedly with that same fire in our hearts.

This booklet is a compilation of the words of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich pertaining to the fourteen traditional Stations of the Cross. These words spoken by the Blessed and transcribed for her by Klemens Brentano have been a source of inspiration to many, including Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins, Jacques and Raissa Maritain, and Mel Gibson in his writing of "The Passion of the Christ." The material is arranged in such a way as to facilitate the praying of the Stations of the Cross by the faithful. The second fall of Jesus (traditionally the 7th Station) is combined with the 4th Station in Blessed Anne Catherine's visions; and the third fall of Jesus (traditionally the 9th Station) is combined with the 5th Station. Thus, the Stations of the Cross presented here are twelve in number, though all fourteen traditional Stations are represented within the twelve.

And, oh, what beautiful flames of love has he not enkindled in so many souls, especially by the pains that he chose to suffer in his death, in order to prove to us the immeasurable love which he still bears to us! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No story has more significance than this: the death and resurrection of Jesus. But somehow the oft-repeated tale of Christ’s passion can become too familiar, too formalized, for us to experience its incredible immediacy. The meditations in Reliving the Passion, which received a Gold Medallion Award in 1993, follow the story as given in the gospel of Mark—from the moment when the chief priests plot to kill Jesus to the Resurrection. But these readings are more than a recounting of events; they are an imaginary reenactment, leading the reader to re-experience the Passion or perhaps see it fully for the very first time. As only a great storyteller can, Walter Wangerin enables the reader to see the story from the inside, to discover the strangeness and wonder of the events as they unfold. It’s like being there. In vivid images and richly personal detail, Wangerin helps us recognize our own faces on the streets of Jerusalem; breathe the dark and heavy air of Golgotha; and experience, as Mary and Peter did, the bewilderment, the challenge, and the ultimate revelation of knowing the man called Jesus. “The story gets personal for every reader,” writes Wangerin, “for this is indeed our story, the story whereby we personally have been saved from such a death as Jesus died. “No, there is not another tale in the world more meaningful than this—here is where we all take our stands against sin and death and Satan, upon this historical, historic event. I consider it a holy privilege to participate in it retelling. “Read this book slowly. Read it with a seeing faith. Walk the way with Jesus. We, his followers of later centuries, do follow even now. Read, walk, come, sigh, live. Live! Rise again!”
