Book excerpt: "The scope of Fischer's Mastery of Surgery, Sixth Edition, is consistent with the broad training of a general surgeon, providing extensive coverage of vascular surgery as well as of common thoracic, breast, esophageal, endocrine, colorectal, gastric, pancreatic, liver, and biliary procedures. Each procedural chapter reviews the essentials of diagnosis, anatomy, and pre-operative planning, but focuses most heavily on step-by-step depictions and descriptions of procedures. Each chapter concludes, as is traditional for this classic text, with an editorial commentary which strives to put the chapter in a broad context and provide helpful critiques of the most recent literature. The sixth edition will include a dozen new chapters, including endovascular treatment of varicose veins, fasciotomy, and thoracic aortic transaction. The vascular section has been completely reorganized and will incorporate both open and endovascular procedures. For the first time, the sixth edition is in full color."--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Practice of Surgery, Vol. 2 of 8: A Complete System of the Science and Art of Surgery, by Representative Surgeons of the United States and Canada Leprosy still exists extensively in Mexico. Scattered cases are found here and there among the Gulf States, and it is seen on the Pacific coast in the persons of Chinese and Hawaiian immigrants. Isolated cases are encountered from time to time in all the seaboard cities. Many Norwegian lepers settled in our North western States, but the disease has never shown a tendency to spread there and is rapidly dying out. Leprosy in Louisiana appears to have been introduced either by Acadian immigration in 1758 or, as in the case of Tracadie, directly from northern France, where the disease has not yet entirely died out. In other cases, the arteries and capillaries of a tract of tissue being thus plugged by embola, the blood in the veins leading l'rom the part will coagulate; and this coagulation, spreading into veins beyond the part primarily affected, will cause thrombosis of some larger veins. Should a piece of the thrombus projecting into a vein become detached, it will be carried on in the circulation until arrested at some point, as in the lungs, or, being arrested in and obstructing a venous trunk, it may give rise to ao-called phlebitis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an engaging, detailed portrait of the people, ideas, and beliefs that made up the world of English medieval medicine between 750 and 1450, a time when medical practice extended far beyond modern definitions. The institutions of court, church, university, and hospital--which would eventually work to separate medical practice from other duties--had barely begun to exert an influence in medieval England, writes Faye Getz. Sufferers could seek healing from men and women of all social ranks, and the healing could encompass spiritual, legal, and philosophical as well as bodily concerns. Here the author presents an account of practitioners (English Christians, Jews, and foreigners), of medical works written by the English, of the emerging legal and institutional world of medicine, and of the medical ideals present among the educated and social elite. How medical learning gained for itself an audience is the central argument of this book, but the journey, as Getz shows, was an intricate one. Along the way, the reader encounters the magistrates of London, who confiscate a bag said by its owner to contain a human head capable of learning to speak, and learned clerical practitioners who advise people on how best to remain healthy or die a good death. Islamic medical ideas as well as the poetry of Chaucer come under scrutiny. Among the remnants of this far distant medical past, anyone may find something to amuse and something to admire.

Book excerpt: Daniel Turner’s prolific writings provide valuable insight into the practice of a commonplace Enlightenment London surgeon. Turner’s career-long crusade against quackery and his voluminous writings on syphilis, a common ‘surgical disorder’, provide a refined view into distinction between orthodox and quack practices in eighteenth-century London.
