Book excerpt: A moving middle-grade mystery about a boy dealing with long-repressed memories of his father as he learns about his Mexican and Haitian heritage while spying on a mysterious stranger during the first weeks of COVID lockdown. Lalo Lesperance lives with his older brother and Mexican American mother in a low-income apartment building in Fort Myers. They moved there from a subdivision after the family lost Lalo’s Haitian American father. At school, Lalo is known as the boy who can’t remember anything and needs special help in all his classes. But when the first COVID lockdown hits, he finds himself in a friendship of convenience with Vivi, a Mexican American kid his age who gets perfect grades and who never gave him a second thought when they were in school. Vivi’s abuela watches the kids while their mothers work long shifts as nurses at a clinic slammed by COVID. As Lalo navigates his much smaller pandemic world, he discovers his apartment building has its own mysteries, like a sinister stranger in an old RV and a storage closet full of junk, including an old radio that just might hold the key to remembering why Lalo’s family moved to the apartment and what happened to his father.

One night with professional bull rider Trent Campbell had been everything that Kelly Sullivan had fantasized about. Unfortunately, it cost her everything. When she became pregnant, her father threw her out because she wouldn’t tell him the baby's father was his rodeo hero—the hero who ghosted her when she tried so many times to tell him about their daughter. Trent Campbell never forgot the best night of his life. It was what kept him going when a 2,000-lbs bull ended his career and almost his life. Throughout his long recovery, thinking of Kelly and wishing he still had his stolen phone so he could contact her, were what got him through the tough days—that, and his bull-headed stubbornness that he’d not only walk again, he’d ride. When Kelly returns to Last Stand, Texas, in a last-ditch effort to keep her family from selling the Three Sisters Ranch, she has a plan to make her father proud of her again by turning part of the land into a destination wedding location. Her father, however, has already temporary leased Trent some land for a rodeo school. Kelly and Trent still have the same explosive chemistry, but now the stakes are higher. If she lets Trent into her life, it won’t only be her heart he breaks this time if he leaves, it will be their daughter’s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These letters/essays were written by Mitzi Broome McKinney, and posthumously compiled (and very minimally edited) by her daughter, Rebekah McKinney-Reese. They are stories about Mitzis childhood in West Texas on the ranch near Broome, Texas, with memories about her family and friends. The stories are insightful, poignant, and a window into the mind and spirit of a woman nearing the end of her liferemembering good times, bad times, lessons learned, and all the Life in between. Mitzi began writing these Letters to Horrie as shared remembrances with her cousin, Horace Kelton, when she was first exploring the wonderful new world of e-mail. She wrote other essays/stories as well, which are also included. Writing provided a creative outlet when Mitzis physical limitations prohibited her from working with her beloved metal, and a vehicle for writing down memories that would have been lost had she not committed them to the written word. Her family is very grateful that she did. Rebekah compiled these letters/essays after Mitzi died in November 2006. It was a way to help her cope with her immense grief, and she felt closer to her mother as she read and re-read the material. Rebekah and Mitzi always talked about compiling these letters into a book, but never quite got around to it. Mitzi was none too happy with her daughters coaxing her into the computer age, but we now know from these writings that she was glad she did. Reading these memories now made Rebekah wish she could ask her mother a million more questions, and she hopes that publishing these stories will keep her mothers memory and a way of life gone by alive for future generations. This little book was compiled primarily as a legacy for Mitzis family and friends. If other readers find this material, and are encouraged to write down their familys stories and history, so much the better.

Book excerpt: It would take a Christmas miracle to get these two together Veterinarian Janice Sullivan has been horse-crazy all her life and only wanted to work on her family’s cattle farm, the Three Sisters Ranch, but her father’s constant criticisms drove her away, forcing her to choose a new career in dressage and leaving her secret crush behind. With the ranch facing possible bankruptcy, Janice has an idea to save it – a woman’s retreat. With Christmas around the corner, Janice is not only hoping for a chance under the mistletoe with the one man she’s been unable to forget, but also to give a few cowgirl wannabes a chance in the saddle. Bah humbug! The last thing ranch foreman Nate Pierson needs is a bunch of weepy or giggly eggnog-swilling city chicks getting in his way and distracting his men while they’re busting their tails wrangling long horns. His short temper and lack of patience often push people away except the one woman he needs to leave alone. As tempting as she is, Janice, the boss’ daughter, can never be anything more than a fantasy. The only Christmas spirit he wants is 100 proof, especially when he has to matchmake Janice with the ranch's vet. Nate knows from experience that Christmas miracles are for suckers, but it doesn't stop his heart from wishing Janice could wind up under his tree instead of with the man her Daddy wants her to marry.
