Download or read book Engel's England written by Matthew Engel and published by Profile Books. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England, says Matthew Engel, is the most complicated place in the world. And, as he travels through each of the historic English counties, he discovers that's just the start of it. Every county is fascinating, the product of a millennium or more of history: still a unique slice of a nation that has not quite lost its ancient diversity. He finds the well-dressers of Derbyshire and the pyromaniacs of Sussex; the Hindus and huntsmen of Leicestershire; the goddess-worshippers of Somerset. He tracks down the real Lancashire, hedonistic Essex, and the most mysterious house in Middlesex. In Durham he goes straight from choral evensong to the dog track. As he seeks out the essence of each county - from Yorkshire's broad acres to the microdot of Rutland - Engel always finds the unexpected . Engel's England is a totally original look at a confused country: a guidebook for people who don't think they need a guidebook. It is always quirky, sometimes poignant and often extremely funny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an ornithological bibliography for the counties of England, Wales, and Scotland and for the Isle of Man. It includes all known books, pamphlets and papers which contain substantial studies of the birds of local areas, from a county down to a back garden or a gravel pit. Each county has an introduction on its boundaries and the history of its ornithology. There has been no comprehensive national publication of this kind since Mullens, Swann and Jourdain's Geographical Bibliography in 1920. The volume also provides a detailed record of the many county and local bird reports and of the ever-increasing number of area surveys produced by statutory and voluntary bodies. The material is arranged by the pre-1974 counties and takes the record up to 1995. There are maps to show the many changes in county boundaries since 1800. The book will be a standard reference work for libraries and collectors, and for anyone interested in the rich and diverse development of local ornithology in its homeland. Lovers of the Middle Ages will also seek out the county's exceptional Anglo-Saxon churches, while many of its great castles - Brancepeth, Raby, Auckland, Lambton - conceal palatial Georgian and Victorian interiors. The landscape varies dramatically, from the wilds of Teesdale and Weardale, in the west, to the pioneering industrial ports of Sunderland and Hartlepool on the coast, including fine gentry houses and stone-built market towns. South Tyneside and northern Cleveland, historically part of County Durham, are also covered.

Book Synopsis Victorian Maps of England by : Thomas Moule
Download or read book Victorian Maps of England written by Thomas Moule and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most beautiful Victorian maps of England's counties and cities – in large format – by one of Britain's great cartographer's Thomas Moule. Thomas Moule was one of the finest Victorian mapmakers and is regarded as the true follower of John Speed in the cartographic history of Britain. Moule’s beautifully observed county and city maps present a minutely detailed record of 19th-century England. They were first published in collectable parts between 1830 and 1837 and then published together in the extensive 2-volume masterwork The English Counties Delineated. Moule celebrated the ‘ancientness’ and history of each county by including pastoral or monument views within the maps, all framed by cartouches, festoons and architectural ornament in a variety of historical styles. But underpinning this ancient vision is the hand of the British Industrial Revolution. Moule’s maps are deeply informed by the early technical work of the Ordnance Survey and record the unstoppable growth of the major cities and the unrelenting spread of the railways. The maps have remained influential and highly collectable as both originals and as reproductions. For the first time in a generation this new large-format volume, comprising 55 county and city maps, presents the main body of Thomas Moule’s work alongside his original detailed text descriptions. The book’s Introduction explains Moule’s career as a writer and antiquary and sets his celebrated maps in the context of the technical cartographic revolution in which they were published. The book examines the wide-ranging artistic and cultural influences exhibited as Moule combines accurate cartography with highly decorative architectural frames and evocative, Romantic, pastoral views of the England he so cherished. In doing so it positions him alongside his fellow celebrated Victorian pioneers, including George Virtue, William Westall, Walter Scott, Charles Dickens, JMW Turner, Augustus Pugin, Edward Stanford and George Bradshaw.
