Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew's Gospel reveals little about the three wealthy visitors said to have presented gifts to the infant Jesus. Yet hundreds of generations of Christians have embellished that image of the Three Kings or Magi for a myriad of social and political as well as spiritual purposes. Here Richard Trexler closely examines how this story has been interpreted and used throughout the centuries. Biblically, the Journey of the Magi presents a positive image of worldly power, depicting the faithful in progress toward their God and conveying the importance of the gift-giving laity as legitimators of their deity. With this in mind, Trexler explains in particular how Western societies have molded the story to describe and augment their own power--before the infant God and among themselves. The author demonstrates how the magi as a group functioned in Christian society. For example, magi plays, processions, and images taught people how to pray and behave in reverential contexts; they featured monarchs and heads of republics who enacted the roles of the magi to legitimate their rule; and they constrained native Americans to fall in line behind the magi to instill in them loyalty toward the European world order. However, Trexler also shows these philosopher-kings as competitive among each other, as were groups of different ages, races, and genders in society at large. Originally modeled on representations of the Roman triumphs, the magi have reached the present day as street children wearing crowns of cardboard, proving again the universality of the image for constructing, reinforcing, and even challenging a social hierarchy. Originally published in 1997. Book excerpt: Telekinesis, the non-physical movement of objects, is at first glance somewhat more unusual than telepathy. However, it is definitely a part of everyday life, even if it is not immediately recognized as such everywhere it occurs. When someone in karate smashes a brick with his hand or someone in distress can suddenly lift a car - what is that? There are also people who fill a room as soon as they enter - how do these people do it so that you can almost physically feel it? Fortunately, there is a simple experiment with which one can directly prove telekinesis in the sense of "moving without touching", as well as a multitude of playful experiments with which one can then further explore and practice telekinesis. With this book, you will: · Learn the basics of telekinesis, including its origin and history · Discover just how telekinesis works · Learn all about telekinesis in Hinduism and how it is viewed in the scientific world · Master the fundamentals of telekinesis · Discover the importance of believing in yourself when planning to learn and master telekinesis · Learn all about meditation, its benefits, and its role in practicing telekinesis · Master different breathing techniques and discover their significance in the practice of telekinesis · Discover what pranayama is and why it is important Telepathy is a unique and special gift. It is more than just a method to help you communicate your thoughts; it can also be used to help others and protect yourself from negativity. This book will guide you on your first steps to unlock your telepathic abilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of the Magi explores the popular Catholic musical ensembles of southeastern Brazil known as folias de reis (companies of kings). Composed predominantly of low-income workers, the folias reenact the journey of the Wise Men to Bethlehem and back to the Orient, as they roam from house to house, singing to bless the families they visit in exchange for food and money. These gifts, in turn, are used to prepare a festival on Kings' Day, January 6, to which all who contributed are invited. Focusing on urban folias, Suzel Ana Reily shows how participants use the ritual journeys and musical performances of the folias to create sacred spheres distinct from, yet intimately related to, their everyday world. Reily calls this practice "enchantment" and argues that it allows the folia communities to temporarily make the social ideals of mutual reciprocity and equality embodied in their religious beliefs a reality. The contrast between their ritual experiences and the daily lives of these impoverished workers, in turn, reinforces the religious convictions of these devotees of the music of the Magi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides compelling evidence that creation myths from the dawn of civilization correspond to cutting edge astronomical discoveries • Exposes the contradictions in current cosmological theory and offers a scientific basis for the ancient myths and esoteric lore that encode a theory of continuous creation • By the scientist who was the first to disprove the Big Bang theory on the basis of observational data Recent developments in theoretical physics, including systems theory and chaos theory, are challenging long-held mechanistic views of the universe. Many thinkers have speculated that the remnants of an ancient science survive today in mythology and esoteric lore, but until now the scientific basis for this belief has remained cloaked in mystery. Paul LaViolette reveals the remarkable parallels between the cutting edge of scientific thought and creation myths from the dawn of civilization. With a scientific sophistication rare among mythologists, LaViolette deciphers the forgotten cosmology of ancient lore in a groundbreaking scientific tour de force. In direct, nontechnical language, he shows how these myths encode a theory of cosmology in which matter is continually growing from seeds of order that emerge spontaneously from the surrounding subquantum chaos. Exposing the contradictions that bedevil the big bang theory, LaViolette offers both the specialist and the general reader a controversial and highly stimulating critique of prevailing misconceptions about the seldom-questioned superiority of modern science over ancient cosmology. By restoring and reanimating this ancient scientific worldview, Genesis of the Cosmos leads us beyond the restrictive metaphors of modern science and into a new science for the 21st century.
