Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of corrosion pitting on the fatigue behavior of 2024-T4 aluminum alloy and to establish a method of measuring pitting corrosion daage wih respect to fatigue. Surface roughness measurements were used to give a useful indication of the fatigue life that may be expected from a corroded structural member of 2024-T4 aluminum. The effect of pre-existing corrosion on the mechanism of fatigue was determined to be largely that of a stress raiser. In the case of pitting corrosion, calculaions could be made, based upon critical pit measurements, to determine the stress concentration effect of the corrosion pit. (Author).

Book excerpt: Ten different alloys based on the 7075 composition were utilized to study the effects of purity level (w/o Fe+Si) and dispersoid type on the notched fatigue behavior in two different environments. These same alloys were used in other AFML investigations to determine how the various precipitates found in commercial 7000 series aluminum alloys control the mechanical properties. Purity significantly affects the notched (Kt=3) fatigue life only in an inert test environment at the lowest load tested. Purity did not significantly affect the notched fatigue life when tests were conducted in an aggressive test environment. While the dispersoid type did change the macroscopic fracture appearance of the test specimen, this produced a small change in the notched fatigue life which was not significant at the one percent alpha level. By far, the test environment was more important than the metallurgical variables considered. This is somewhat surprising since the duraction of the tests were at most two days, allowing little time for corrosion. It appears that specifying stricter alloy purity levels or different dispersoid types will not improve the notched fatigue life of wrought 7000 series aluminum alloys. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth properties of friction stir welded joints of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy were studied via constant amplitude load (increasing ?K) testing under open air and accelerated salt fog exposure conditions. For low ?K values, longitudinal crack growth in the weld line center was slower under corrosion fatigue than by air because of the prevalence of corrosion-induced crack closure. On the other hand, growth rates of transverse crack crossing the weld nugget were not affected by the environment aggressiveness because of a balance between hydrogen embrittlement and corrosion inducing crack closure along with welding compressive residual stresses. For intermediate ?K values, propagation rates 5 times faster were observed for both longitudinal and transverse cracks under salt fog ambient as a result of hydrogen-induced embrittlement, which is favored by larger crack tip openings allowing local corrosive medium access. As the final catastrophic fracture approaches, longitudinal and transversal crack propagation rates under corrosion fatigue approximated the values observed in air testing, as time, under the 30-Hz loading frequency applied, was scarce for an effective interaction between crack tip fresh material and the hostile environment. For longitudinal cracks, precracking in air resulted in fatigue-corrosion limit factor ?Kth slightly lower than that obtained in salt fog precracked specimens, as the corrosive role played by the salt fog environment along the precrack introduction contributed to crack-closure effect, so increasing the apparent value of ?Kth. On the other hand, the environment in which a transverse precrack was created had a negligible effect on ?Kth because of the establishment of an equilibrium condition between corrosion-induced precrack closure and hydrogen embrittlement.
