When they are assigned to work together on one last history project, they hardly expect the monotony of high school life to change. Instead, as they decode a series of unexplained clues hidden within their history project itself, Logan and Emma manage to unfold an ancient mystery that has baffled scientists and archeologists, one with powerful implications for the present day. As they embrace the adventure they've stumbled upon, and a growing romantic attraction to each other, Logan and Emma find themselves caught up in a dangerous, high-stakes race across the globe to decipher mankind's past in order to save humanity's future, not to mention their very own lives, with a mystery that just might reach towards the stars...

This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the coordinate-free, or geometric, approach to the theory of linear models; more precisely, Model I ANOVA and linear regression models with non-random predictors in a finite-dimensional setting. This approach is more insightful, more elegant, more direct, and simpler than the more common matrix approach to linear regression, analysis of variance, and analysis of covariance models in statistics. The book discusses the intuition behind and optimal properties of various methods of estimating and testing hypotheses about unknown parameters in the models. Topics covered range from linear algebra, such as inner product spaces, orthogonal projections, book orthogonal spaces, Tjur experimental designs, basic distribution theory, the geometric version of the Gauss-Markov theorem, optimal and non-optimal properties of Gauss-Markov, Bayes, and shrinkage estimators under assumption of normality, the optimal properties of F-test, and the analysis of covariance and missing observations.

Book excerpt: This study argues that the domain traditionally covered by 'coordination' and 'subordination' in English can be subdivided into four distinct construction types. The constructions are defined on the basis of differences in their 'interpersonal' structure, i.e. the grammatical encoding of speaker-attitude and speaker-interlocutor interaction. It is shown that the four types constitute syntactically, semantically and pragmatically coherent categories, with differences in interpersonal structure defining and motivating distinct syntactic behaviour, distinct pragmatic functions and distinct semantic classes of clause linkage. The validity of the analysis is demonstrated in three ways. First, it is shown that the analysis can make sense of the wide range of apparently conflicting criteria found in the literature on complex sentences, which can now be explained as reflections of four different construction types rather than as alternative perspectives on one single contrast between coordination and subordination. Second, it is shown how the analysis can deal with two specific problems in the more general area of clause combining, viz. the syntactic basis of the distinction between 'content', 'epistemic' and 'speech act' levels of clause linkage, and the distinct discursive functions associated with initial and final position of adverbial clauses. Finally, it is also shown that the proposed analysis is useful beyond the analysis of English, with parallels in a number of cross-linguistically recurrent phenomena of clause linkage. The book is mainly of interest to linguistics researchers in the areas of syntax, semantics and pragmatics as well as to graduate students with a focus on these fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised and expanded new edition of the definitive English work on map projections. The revisions take into account the huge advances in geometrical geodesy which have occurred since the early years of satellite geodesy. The detailed configuration of the geoid resulting from the GEOS and SEASAT altimetry measurements are now taken into consideration. Additionally, the chapter on computation of map projections is updated bearing in mind the availability of pocket calculators and microcomputers. Analytical derivation of some map projections including examples of pseudocylindrical and polyconic projections is also covered. Work undertaken in the USA and USSR on the creation of suitable map projections obtained through numerical analysis has been included. The book concludes with a chapter on the abuse and misrepresentation of map projections. An invaluable reference source for professional cartographers and all those interested in the fundamental problems of mapping the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph develops a method of creating convenient coordinate systems for game theory that will allow readers to more easily understand, analyze, and create games at various levels of complexity. By identifying the unique characterization of games that separates the individual’s strategic interests from the group’s collective behavior, the authors construct a single analytical methodology that readers will be able to apply to a wide variety of games. With its emphasis on practicality and approachability, readers will find this book an invaluable tool, and a viable alternative to the ad hoc analytical approach that has become customary for researchers utilizing game theory. The introductory chapters serve two important purposes: they review several games of fundamental importance, and also introduce a dynamic that is inherent in games, but has gone unexplored until now. After this has been established, readers will advance from simple 2 x 2 games to games with more player strategies and dynamics. For interested readers, a rigorous treatment of the underlying mathematics is conveniently gathered at the end of the book. Additional topics of interest, such as extensive form and coalitional games, are presented to help readers visualize more complex settings that will be vital in aiding the understanding of advanced topics, such as coalition-free Nash points, multi-player repeated games, and more. Coordinate Systems for Games is ideal for a wide variety of researchers interested in game theory, including social scientists, economists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and more. The authors' approachable style also makes this accessible to an audience at any scale of experience, from beginning non-specialists to more practiced researchers.

Book excerpt: The report presents certain new mathematical techniques useful in the analysis of upper atmospheric chemical processes. Non-relativistic systems of particles always have among their dynamical variables the operators Xi(i = 1, 2, 3) which characterize the position of the center of mass, the operators Pi which characterize the total momentum of the system, and the angular momentum operators Ji. In the present paper all te operators were found which satisfy the quantum mechanical commutation relations. Various bases are discussed and representations of these operators are given in these bases. Applications to scattering theory are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one book that can genuinely be said to be straight from the horse’s mouth. Written by the originator of the technique, it examines parallel coordinates as the leading methodology for multidimensional visualization. Starting from geometric foundations, this is the first systematic and rigorous exposition of the methodology's mathematical and algorithmic components. It covers, among many others, the visualization of multidimensional lines, minimum distances, planes, hyperplanes, and clusters of "near" planes. The last chapter explains in a non-technical way the methodology's application to visual and automatic data mining. The principles of the latter, along with guidelines, strategies and algorithms are illustrated in detail on real high-dimensional datasets.
