If you are unaware of what can happen to a young person whose life was destroyed by becoming a drug addict, I hope you will read Susan’s life story. This book has great input from the addict, my daughter, on when she started, on how she started, and why she started using drugs. Her letters are insightful as are her confessions, never before told. If I can help even one child avoid the life my daughter has led, it will be worth the agony I have spent in reliving Susan’s life which has been destroyed by the use of drugs.

Book excerpt: My Beautiful Daughter is an inspirational true story about a daughters fight against drug addiction through the eyes of her mother. Louise goes from a happy contented child, to a self destructive drug addict. The impact that it would have on her family especially her parents is key to it all. The story starts where the mother is looking back over the years to when it began, and how she coped with trying to help her daughter, but at the same time having to come to terms with the fact that she may lose her. It covers the constant battle over the lack of help and advice for parents from the professionals. Whilst dealing with her grief on a daily basis, she struggles to understand why this is happening. Then she has to come to terms with the revelation that a terrible event caused her beautiful daughter to take heroin in the first place, leaving the whole family distraught. Finally as her daughter battles to stay clean, a serious life threatening health problem is diagnosed which is one of the consequences of her years of drug abuse. Every time her mother thinks that its nearly over, another challenge emerges and another fight begins. This is a very emotionally charged account of pure desperation from her parents, determined to get back the daughter they feel is lost to them, never giving up hope and at times barely keeping sane, and while their daughter fights her addiction they have to face up to the trauma that led to her drug abuse.

The autobiographical story also chronicles the murder of the author's mother in 1968; the Youth Culture of the 60's, the author's experience as a battered wife and consequent escape, and the devastating effects of that marriage and personal history on her adult daughter, a heroin addict. On the night of August 18, 2009, her beloved 32-year old daughter died of a drug overdose. Despite all the sorrow, this story is neither gloomy nor depressing, but rather an unflinching and compelling account of one woman's life, and her daughter whom she did not abandon to the bitter end. The story is topical and relevant, and needs to be read by every family trying to cope with the problem of addiction. If you also feel at a loss when dealing with your addicted loved ones, then you must read this book for your own sanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir is the harrowing story of one mother's journey through the hell of her daughter's heroin addiction. It is also a topical memoir that traces the social history of drug use from the youth culture of the 1960's to present time, and also examines public policy on drug abuse and its impact on our criminal justice system. The author’s story begins as a young woman whose mother, an antiques dealer, was murdered in her upscale suburban antiques shop in 1968; 3 days after the Chicago Democratic Convention where cops and hippies clashed in a historic confrontation. Subsequently, the author emerged into the youth culture of the 60’s, where rampant drug experimentation was the norm. Out of this chaos, the author then examines her personal history from that personal and social historic moment, leading to her subsequent marriage to an alcoholic, and then to the three children who were the offspring of that marriage. From the time her oldest daughter was a teenager her daughter exhibited addictive personality traits, culminating in a serious heroin addiction and consequent enmeshment in the criminal justice system. On the night of August 18, 2009, at 32 years of age, her daughter lost the battle to her addiction and died of a drug overdose. The suffering this addiction inflicted on her daughter, the family, and society at large is examined in an unflinching portrayal of the nefarious forces at work. Addiction is indeed a thief that steals a promising future from anyone who suffers from these compulsive behaviors, and it steals in an indiscriminate manner from all echelons of society. This moving story makes a brave attempt to understand solutions and treatments for drug addiction. Although the subject matter is gritty, the story is neither gloomy nor depressing, and may offer hope to families of addicts worldwide

Book excerpt: When Gene Lawrence was fifteen and trying to fight a crack addiction, everyone told him that the longer he stayed clean, the easier it would be to say away from crack. They were liars because eight years later at twenty-three years old, Gene finds himself struggling with the frustrating symptoms of a crack craving. It wouldn't be so bad if he could hole up in his apartment and not see anyone, but with the holiday season coming up and his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca, back in town for her wedding, Gene has no choice but to consider what led to his drug addiction and the reasons he's had such a hard time staying off crack since then. Especially for Allison, who he finds himself more attracted to by the day and who is trying to seduce him every time they're alone in the same room. But he'd rather not get involved with Allison at all than fail her in the end. Like he failed Rebecca. Like he failed his mother. Like he failed himself. His relationships with people were always ruined when he let them get entangled with his crack addiction. Because although Gene chose not to go back to crack, it didn't mean he wasn't an addict anymore. Once an addict, always an addict. Part of the Confessions Universe, a series of interconnected stand-alone YA and NA novels featuring protagonists that struggle to overcome the burdens and drawbacks of a specific issue (drugs, eating disorders, trauma, etc.) and how that issue affects their personal, mental, psychological, and romantic lives. Real. Honest. Uncensored.

Book excerpt: If you've just discovered or have reason to believe your child is using nicotine, alcohol or drugs, the first thing to do is sit down and take a deep breath. We know this is scary, but you're in the right place. Take a beat and prepare for the important conversation ahead. The author began to share her story, phone calls and emails began to stream in from other parents asking questions of how to get help, what to do, and what not to do for their heroin addicted adult child. Even though their daughter survived her overdose, the author and her husband continues by leaving you with a parent's worst nightmare. The powerful and tragic ending leads to a family's faith being tested to its very core. The author, a seminary graduate, reveals lessons she has learned along this difficult trail of being a parent of an addict. But rather than turning from her faith or abandoning the God she'd depended upon, she eventually finds a deeper hope and a renewed faith to continue to persevere no matter her child's outcome.

Book excerpt: Jennifer Needle in Her Arm explores the emotional turmoil that parents go through when they have either lost a child to drugs or have to deal with a child currently addicted to drugs. Bonnie Kaye, who lost her daughter Jennifer in 2002 at the age of 22, suffered the guilt and shame almost all good parents go through in the aftermath of losing a child to drugs. In this book, Kaye talks about the journey she and her daughter went through together, and how in the end, nothing she did changed the outcome. She shares some articles she wrote in the years following her loss to help people understand what parents go through with a drug-addicted child. Kaye has also included a number of heart-wrenching writings that Jennifer gave to her to share with others in hopes that they would read about her pain and not have her daily struggles of survival. One passage includes these words of despair and hope: Dear Addiction, What have I ever done to you to deserve all this pain and agony? You have taken everything from me. My family's trust, my family's sleep, my sleep, my apartment, car, jewelry, etc. But worst of all you've taken my sanity, my life, and me. I think of you every day. I even dream about you at night. I'm sure your only thoughts about me are to totally destroy me. I love you yet hate you so much. No matter how hard I fight, you are stronger. I'm 19 but feel 69 because of you. You have robbed me of my childhood. Because of you I have killed, robbed, sold drugs, sold myself, and hurt everyone close to me. You're a liar!!!! You swore you would make things easier for me. You swore I wouldn't have to worry about anything. You promised fun and heaven. But all you have given me is hurt and agony and a living hell. This is my life and I'm taking it back. I'm going to win this battle. I PROMISE. The book is comforting to parents who continue to suffer from shame, guilt, and feelings of helplessness. They will realize they are not alone--and they are not responsible. About the Author Bonnie Kaye is an internationally recognized relationship counselor/author. She is also an educator working with adult high school dropouts to obtain their high school equivalency diploma. She is the director of the Northeast GED Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Kaye also has a book co-op for independent authors at www.BooksofExcellence.com and an Internet radio show on Sunday evenings for those authors. In 2002, Kaye lost her daughter, Jennifer, at the age of 22 to a three-and-a-half-year heroin addiction. Afterwards, she started a local weekly support group for other parents who were suffering with this catastrophe to help them in the healing process. She stopped the group after nearly a year, unable to do her own healing. Instead, she has done personal one-on-one counseling with parents who requested her help over the past decade. Kaye's other books include: The Gay Husband Checklist for Women Who Wonder; Straight Wives: Shattered Lives (Volumes 1 and 2); ManReaders: A Woman's Guide to Dysfunctional Men; Bonnie Kaye's Straight Talk; How I Made My Husband Gay: Myths About Straight Wives; Doomed Grooms: Gay and Bisexual Husbands in Straight Marriages; Gay Husbands Say the Darndest Things and Over the Cliff: Gay Husbands in Straight Marriages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over the world, adolescents are at one time or another confronted with the strong temptation to try narcotics. This terrifying book is a compendium of "arguments against " presented in a form anyone can understand. It is written on a level unknown to most Americans and especially children. The book presents real confessions of real drug addicts, aged 17 to 42, horrifying stories, accompanied by comments of the author, medical specialists, teachers and representatives of the police. This book is full of common sense. It is not the usual and useless book of anti-drug propaganda full of threats of "irreversible brain damage," which to adolescents is a pure abstraction. This work introduces them to the nightmarish experiences of drug addicts told in their own words. Its brutally honest narratives will dispel any aura of glamour that may have surrounded narcotics in the minds of some adolescents and scare them so badly that they will never give in to the impulse to try them-at least that's what many experts and media reviewers say. The main reason so many of our children do succumb to the initial temptation to use drugs is that they don't know the real truth, the real consequences of doing so. After reading this book they will know it. Here is what one Russian blogger with a specific name Angry Vampire writes about this book: - Such first person accounts always get you where you live. They ought to print "Magic dreams" at government expense and give it to middle school classes to read, so that when these kids hear the words "meth," "heroin," or " shoot up" it would trigger an involuntary gag reflex. That would throw cold water on them once and for all. And another blogger writes: - Not long ago I happened to get a hold of this book by Sergey Baimukhametov. I began reading it just before going to bed. And...I just couldn't do it. I rushed to my mom and woke her up with my wild screaming: "Mom! I'm scared!" All of you, my peers, read it! Let all of us be too scared even to think about drugs, to say nothing of touching them. It is no wonder that "Magic dreams" proved to be a bestseller in Russia, and, as of this writing, has been published in 18 editions.

Book excerpt: Maureen Cavanagh’s gripping memoir If You Love Me is the story of a mother who suddenly finds herself on the frontlines of the opioid epidemic as her daughter battles—and ultimately reckons with—substance use disorder. Fast-paced and heartwarming, devastating and redemptive, Maureen’s incredible odyssey into the opioid crisis—first as a parent, then as an advocate—is ultimately a deeply moving mother-daughter story. When Maureen and her ex-husband Mike see their daughter Katie’s needle track marks for the first time, it is a complete shock. But, slowly, the drug use explains everything—Katie’s constant exhaustion, erratic moods, and all those spoons that have gone missing from the house. Once Mike and Maureen get Katie into detox, Maureen goes to sleep that night hoping that in 48 hours she’ll have her daughter back. It’s not that simple. Like the millions of parents and relatives all over the country—some of whom she has helped through her nonprofit organization—Maureen learns that recovery is neither straightforward nor brief. She fights to save Katie’s life, breaking down doors on the seedy side of town with Mike, kidnapping Katie outside a convenience store, and battling the taboo around substance use disorder in her picturesque New England town. Maureen is launched into the shadowy world of overcrowded, for-profit rehabilitation centers that often prey on worried parents. As Katie runs away from one program after another, never outrunning her pain, Maureen realizes that even while she becomes an expert on getting countless men and women into detox and treatment centers, she remains powerless to save her own daughter. Maureen's unforgettable story brings the opioid crisis out of the shadows and into the house next door.
