I give reasons for thinking that the number of corpuscles in an atom of an element is not greatly in excess of the atomic weight of the element, thus in particular that the number of corpuscles in an atom of hydrogen is not large. Some writers seem to think that this makes the conception of the model atom more difficult. I am unable to follow this view; it seems to me to make the conception easier, since it makes the number of possible atoms much more nearly equal to the number of the chemical elements. It has, however, an important bearing on our conception of the origin of the mass of the atom, as if the number of corpuscles in the atom is of the same order as the atomic weight we cannot regard the mass of an atom as mainly or even appreciably due to the mass of the corpuscles. I am indebted to Mr. G. W. C. Kave for assisting in revising the proof sheets. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitution of Matter The lectures which form the body of this book were delivered at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, in the month of February, 1913, for The Norman W. Harris Lectures of this year. The fact that they were actual lec tures accounts for the form in which the text is given; and the further fact that the audi ence for whom they were prepared was com posed, for a large part, of people unfamiliar with both the facts and the methods of science must be accepted as the justification for the treatment of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter and Energy The behaviour of matter and energy represents one aspect only of human knowl edge, which is generally known by the name of physical science. It seems well to state at the outset that, throughout these pages, when the term science is employed it refers solely to this one branch. Physical science enjoys the distinction of being the most fundamental of the experimental sciences, and its laws are obeyed universally, so far as is known, not merely by inanimate things, but also by living organisms, in their minutest parts, as single individuals, and also as whole communities. It results from this that, however complicated a series Of phenomena may be and however many other sciences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Properties of Matter, Vol. 5 Under the title Properties of Matter the author has endeavoured to treat those branches of Physics which are not usually included in books on Light, Sound, Heat, or Electricity. The book is intended for use in Secondary Schools, Technical Schools, and University Colleges, and includes all that is usually, required for a Pass degree. The treatment is experimental, and the use of advanced mathematics has been avoided; but the calculus has been used in places where the avoidance of it leads to tedious calculations. It is hoped that this volume will fulfil a useful function by providing an elementary course of work on the Properties of Matter, from which the more intricate details and the more advanced theory are omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter and Motion Physical science, which up to the end of the eighteenth century had been fully occupied in forming a conception Of natural phenomena as the result of forces acting between one body and another, has now fairly entered on the next stage of progress - that in which the energy Of a material system is conceived as determined by the configuration and motion of that system, and in which the ideas of configuration, motion, and force are generalised to the utmost extent warranted by their physical definitions. TO become acquainted with these fundamental ideas, to examine them under all their aspects, and habitually to guide the current of thought along the channels of strict dynamical reasoning, must be the foundation of the training Of the student of Physical Science. The following statement of the fundamental doctrines of Matter and Motion is therefore to be regarded as an introduction to the study of Physical Science in general. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter and Some of Its Dimensions Particularly is this true with reference to the electrical theory of matter, which seems to give a moral value to the intellectual perceptions of modern physicists. Though not yet elevated to the dignity of a universally accepted theory, it is no exaggeration to say that its advocates are to be found among the world's greatest thinkers, and that their numbers daily increase. The content of the following pages is to be regarded in the light of an hypothesis only. The facts have been culled from a variety of sources, and only those discussed which are well recognized in the scientific and philosoph 1cal worlds. Much time has been expended in marshaling these facts, but the writer feels that he will be more than repaid if, in the case of a single reader, he has dulled the edge of doubt or caused one sorrow to seem less real. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mystery of Matter: And Other Essays When a gradual landslip occurs on a great scale, the inhabitants of the neighbourhood are naturally anxious to know how far the movement may possibly extend, and what is likely to be the level of ultimate settle ment. So, at the present day, when faith's centre of gravity is slowly but surely moving away from tradi tion and authority to some position of more stable equilibrium, all of us, when not rendered absolutely incoherent by alarm, have a reasonable wish to fore cast the final result, or, at all events, to be assured of some limits beyond which the movement cannot extend. Of course, there can be no finality in Opinion or knowledge. For even ascertained facts are always showing fresh aspects, or unfolding new meanings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Light on the Structure of Matter According to this modern conception, therefore, all atoms have very much in common. But the Maxwellian idea of their physical independence is not the only one which has had to go. Investigations in radioactivity have shown that we must also abandon the idea that the formation of a molecule (or atom) is an event not belonging to the order of nature under which we live. Research in this field has shown that the atomic orbital system sketched above may become unstable and a por tion of an atom be shot off. What is left behind is then no longer the same atom but an atom of a new substance. In other words the dream of the old alchemists of transmuting matter has been realized. It is true, modern transmutation is not on the gross scale nor in the manner the alchemists sought after, but it is equally true that by a process of disintegration, a por tion of one substance may change into another. Occasionally in some of the heavier unstable atoms a catastrophe occurs - a portion is shot off, an atom of a new substance is left behind. In this discovery the name of Prof. Rutherford, of Manchester University, formerly of mcgill University, is outstanding. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dynamical Theory of Gases The first of these hypotheses belongs to the domain of chemistry; indeed it forms the basis of modern chemical science. It is believed not only that all matter is composed of a great number of molecules, but also that all molecules of the same chemical substance are exactly similar as regards size, mass, etc. If this were not so, it would be possible to separate the mole cules of different types by chemical processes of fractionisation, whereas Dalton found that the successively separated fractions of a substance were exactly similar. It is true that very modern research has thrown some doubt on whether the molecules of a substance are all as exactly identical as they were once thought to be, but it is also true that the hypothesis of exact similarity of molecules is now, as a broad truth, unassailable, and forms a suitable and convenient working hypothesis for the Theory of Matter.
