Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compound Locomotive, Vol. 12: Supplement to the Science of Railways It is not surprising, inasmuch as the Opinions Of engineers and firemen respecting the opera tion of simple engines differ so widely, that there should be much controversy among them in re gard to the operation of compound locomotives. Experience on the part of those operating the compound locomotive will tend to its better service and consequently greater development. Many prejudices against it are due to lack of. Ao quaintance with its operation. This is true of every new thing. Especially is it true in the case of compounds where a railway has few loco motives of this kind. The feeling is but natural, if we remember, as we should, that in the handling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compound Locomotive, Vol. 12: Supplement to the Science of Railways Note - In regard to the merits of the compound cylinder as compared with the single-expansion, I do not desire nor profess to express any opinion. I merely wish to describe the compound cylinder in what follows, and, if in some places preference seems to be expressed, it is the claim of builders and not mine. Those who use locomotives must themselves be the judges of the respective merits of single-expansion and compound cylinders and of the particular pattern they want. In view of the fact that the Compound Locomotive is of comparatively recent introduction as compared with the single-expansion cylinder, its construction and working are less understood by those connected with the equipment department of railroads. These particulars I have, for that reason, thought it best to embody here in connection with the "Engineers' and Firemen's Manual." More and more attention is being given to the expansive use of steam in connection with the locomotive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: While political and social historians have made great progress in trying to understand the making of modern Greece by studying * politics and power struggles, little attention has been given TO the co-evolution of the Greek state and the technologies that were developed during this period. This volume HELPS fills this gap, exploring the formation of the Greek state and the construction of 'modern' Greece through the lens of the history of technology and industry. The contributors look at the role of engineering institutions, the press and of infrastructure technological networks in promoting specific technocratic ideals and legitimizing social roles for the engineers of the period. The volume as a whole offers new insights into the way that engineering culture, institutional reforms and infrastructures contributed to the making of 'modern' Greece.
