Book Synopsis Why Is American Healthcare So Expensive by : Harvey Singh
Download or read book Why Is American Healthcare So Expensive written by Harvey Singh and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be of interest to anyone who is frustrated with the ever-rising costs of American medicine and wants to take a behind-the-scenes look at what is causing this trend. Written for the layperson and the expert alike, it explains why our healthcare market in which the providers depend heavily upon insurance companies for payments is not a free market. Add to that the practice of paying doctors on a fee-for-service basis, and we have created a market with perverse incentives for nearly all the market players. This has resulted in a system of care in which medical mistakes are ubiquitous, malpractice lawsuits are common, and 'end of life' medical costs are astronomical. In fact, medicine has become more dangerous than the disease and a single look at the price tag for some of the treatments can be enough to shock the wealthiest of Americans. But these seemingly diverse and apparently unrelated problems have common origins. The book identifies the common elements at the root of these problems. Then it goes on to show how most problems can be solved by fundamentally changing the way we deliver medicine to our citizens.
Book Synopsis Payer, Provider, Consumer: Industry Confronts Health Care Costs by : D.C. Walsh
Download or read book Payer, Provider, Consumer: Industry Confronts Health Care Costs written by D.C. Walsh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this first monograph, Springer-Verlag launches an unusual publishing venture. The purpose of the Springer Series on Industry and Health Care is to explore in depth the current and potential future role of industry both management and labor in all private sector enterprises-as a financer of health care benefits, as a provider of health care services, and as an extremely influential "consumer" of health care. The assumption behind the series is that private industry has the capabil ity, as an alternative to increased government intervention, to effect major change in the health care delivery system and is beginning to show evidence of exercising that influence. The subject matter covered by the series crosses boundaries between disciplines and specialities-occupational medicine, medical care, public health, economics, business administration, law, public policy, medical sociology-and arises in disparate arenas-labor-manage ment relations, corporate negotiations with insurance carriers, physician patient interactions, public policy, and politics. The Springer Series will draw much of its material from interdisciplinary working conferences, will analyze and synthesize the discussions, add timely background material, and be published within no more than six months of the conferences on which they build. The series will consist of four monographs a year and two volumes of background papers.

Book Synopsis Politics and Health Care Organization by : Lawrence Brown
Download or read book Politics and Health Care Organization written by Lawrence Brown and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among various health cost containment strategies proposed during the 1970s, none has held more sustained fascination than the health maintenance organization (HMO). For many years, policy analysts in search of market- and incentive-based alternatives to “command and control” regulation have argued that medical groups combining prepayment and group practice, and offering comprehensive medical services within a fixed budget, would hold down costs both by their own efficient operations and by the competitive pressures they would apply to the conventional systems. During the 1970s, three presidents and five Congresses worked to formulate and implement legislation to increase the HMO presence nationwide, with very modest results. Some observers concluded that but for the well-intended but counterproductive efforts of the federal government, HMOs might thrive. Indeed, the Reagan administration has called for an end to direct federal financial involvement in building HMOs—though it has also promised legislation to promote HMOs and a newly competitive health care system based on revamped financial incentives and reinvigorated markets. In this book, Lawrence D. Brown, a senior fellow in the Brookings Governmental Studies program, examines the interplay between politics and policy in the federal HMO development effort between 1970 and 1980. He argues that the basic explanation for the disappointments of the policy analysts and federal supporters of HMOs lies not in a political miscarriage but in the overambitious promises of the policy strategy itself. Tracing the poor fit between policy and politics revealed by federal efforts to translate the attractive HMO idea into a workable strategy, Brown concludes that the episode augurs poorly for the competitive reforms frequently offered as a nonregulatory solution to rising health care costs in the 1980s.
