Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eastern screech owl, widespread over the eastern half of North America and noticeably tolerant of human activity, is one of America's most familiar birds. Residing naturally in wooded environs with tree cavities, this owl lives well in suburbia and can be found nesting in mailboxes, porch columns, and purple martin houses. Based on a twenty-five-year study, biologist Frederick R. Gehlbach tells the life story of the eastern screech owl, focusing on case studies of suburban and rural study plots in Central Texas. This is the first thorough study of major life-history, behavioral, and ecological features of the species. Indeed, it is the first concurrent, comparative study of an urban and a rural population of any New World animal. Told in a personal voice, the story of these birds will interest all who have not lost touch with their ancestral world. However, Gehlbach has also included quantitative data and analysis of interest to ecologists, wildlife biologists, and ornithologists. Photographs (including color shots of the gray and rufous phases), figures, and tables provide further detail. Gehlbach's investigations have been those of not only an academic ecologist, but a suburbanite curious about his natural surroundings. The result is a model of research on species population dynamics and adaptation, yielding an emerging picture of what the eastern screech owl needs for successful coexistence with human neighbors.

This relaxed summer event honours Lord Stanley himself - the man who donated the Stanley Cup to hockey - and gives young players a chance to see the wonders of Canada's capital city, travel into the wilds of Algonquin Park, and even go river rafting. Mr. Dillinger is also taking them to visit some of the region's famous ghosts: the ghost of a dead prime minister; the ghost of a man hanged for murder; the ghost of the famous painter Tom Thomson. At first the Owls think this is Mr. Dillinger's best idea ever, until Travis and his friends begin to suspect that one of these ghosts could be for real. Who is this phantom? Why has he come to haunt the Screech Owls? And what is his connection to the mysterious young stranger who offers to coach the team?

Breast cancer is a modern day plague affecting 1.6 million women this year. It is steadily increasing in numbers affected and in severity of disease aggression. Young women by far outnumber young men in numbers getting cancer and it is now the situation that young women get twice as much cancer as men. This is due to their vulnerability to breast cancer. Research, funding and medical focus have not abated this epidemic. Could it be that they are aiding and abetting it's spread? Are some key players running with the hare and hunting with the hounds? Have they closed the stable door and allowed the horse to bolt and get new pastures in underdeveloped countries and amongst the young? Breast cancer is a demographic social and medical issue. It needs to tackled on all three fronts. It is an enigma that a simple answer to its predominant cause has not yet been discovered and eradicated.
