Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-This book contains a historical context, where past events or the study and narration of these events are examined. The historical context refers to the circumstances and incidents surrounding an event. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its characteristics. Therefore, when analyzing events that took place tens, hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is essential to know the historical context to understand them. Otherwise, we would be analyzing and judging what happened in a totally different era with a current perspective. The Complete English Tradesman by Daniel Defoe.Daniel Foe, better known by his pseudonym Daniel Defoe (London, between 1659 and 1661, possibly on October 10, 1660-Moorfields, London, April 24, July / May 5, 1731greg.) Defoe is important for being one of the first cultivators of the novel, a literary genre that became popular in England and also received the title of father of all English novelists.Defoe is considered a pioneer of the economic press.

Book Synopsis The Industrial Revolution: A Translation into Modern English by : Arnold Toynbee
Download or read book The Industrial Revolution: A Translation into Modern English written by Arnold Toynbee and published by Industrial Systems Research. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easier-to-read current language version of the 1884 classic – with a new extended editorial foreword. Arnold Toynbee’s 1884 book is the pioneering general study of the Industrial Revolution. The author combines history and economics to examine its key features, causes and effects. Toynbee rejects the notion that economic development is subject to any immutable “iron laws”. For him, there are no fixed limits to cultivatable land, food supplies, population increase or general economic growth and performance. Improvements in real wages, rents, profits and interest rates can continue indefinitely. In addition, no class has a predetermined place in the economy and society. Toynbee speculates about the future of the working classes and possibilities for improving their material conditions. However, he finds the Marxist doctrine of state Socialism inevitably replacing free market enterprise without basis in economic or historical fact. This modernized version translates the book into current English to improve its readability and understandability. Contents: Editorial foreword 1. Introduction 2. England in 1760: population 3. England in 1760: agriculture 4. England in 1760: manufacturing and trade 5. England in 1760: the decline of the yeomanry 6. England in 1760: the condition of the wage earners 7. Book Synopsis The Feminization Debate in Eighteenth-Century England by : E. Clery
Download or read book The Feminization Debate in Eighteenth-Century England written by E. Clery and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-08-20 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Eighteenth-century, critics of capitalism denounced the growth of luxury and effeminacy; supporters applauded the increase of refinement and the improved status of women. This pioneering study explores the way the association of commerce and femininity permeated cultural production. It looks at the first use of a female author as an icon of modernity in the Athenian Mercury , and reappraises works by Elizabeth Singer Rowe, Mandeville, Defoe, Pope and Elizabeth Carter. Samuel Richardson's novels represent the culmination of the English debate, while contemporary essays by David Hume move towards a fully-fledged enlightenment theory of feminization.

Book Synopsis Fashion and Popular Print in Early Modern England by : Clare Backhouse
Download or read book Fashion and Popular Print in Early Modern England written by Clare Backhouse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion featured in black-letter broadside ballads over a hundred years before fashion magazines appeared in England. In the seventeenth century, these single-sheet prints contained rhyming song texts and woodcut pictures, accessible to almost everyone in the country. Dress was a popular subject for ballads, as well as being a commodity with close material and cultural connections to them. This book analyses how the distinctive words and images of these ballads made meaning, both in relation to each other on the ballad sheet and in response to contemporary national events, sumptuary legislation, religious practice, economic theory, the visual arts and literature. In this context, Clare Backhouse argues, seventeenth-century ballads increasingly celebrated the proliferation of print and fashionable dress, envisioning new roles for men and women in terms of fashion consumption and its importance to national prosperity. The book demonstrates how the hitherto overlooked but extensive source material that these ballads offer can enrich the histories of dress, art and culture in early modern England.
