Book excerpt: If you are reading this book, you're most likely considering ACL surgery for yourself or someone you love. This book aims to guide you through the process and help you understand what will happen and how to prepare so that you can make the process as quick and as painless as possible. First, let me start by introducing myself. My name is Jeff, and my first knee surgery was in 1983, back when I was in college. During my 5 years as a colligate wrestler, I had a total of 4 knee surgeries - 3 to repair to the meniscus and one to replace my ACL. Then, at the age of 46, I had one more ACL replacement, for a total 5 surgeries on my knees. Although I am not a doctor, I learned from these experiences, and I therefore feel qualified to help guide you through the process. My objective is to pass on to you the methods that led me though a quicker recovery than what is the norm today. With the ambition of a competitive athlete, I figured that a little extra hard work would make it possible to overcome anything. And it was this mindset that got me through 4 surgeries; however, my quickest recovery was that of my last operation. I was 46 years old, a little overweight, and yet I somehow managed to cut my recovery time by more than half. I feel grateful for this opportunity to help you do the same. The purpose of this book is not only to share my findings with you but also to inform you on how to prepare for surgery so that there is no huge feeling of uncertainty hanging over you. I will outline for you what is going to happen, how it will feel, and exactly how active and inactive you should be after surgery. This guidance will enable you to go through the process with confidence and focus your energies on what is most important to a quick and painless recovery - okay, 'painless' may be an exaggeration, but we can be sure to keep the pain to an absolute minimum.
