Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Primary care physicians do not know much about dentistry. The mouth is largely neglected in medical training. Training primary care physicians to better understand the basics of dentistry would enable them to be more comfortable identifying their patients' dental problems and collaborating with dentists in their patients' care. This collaboration would lead to better medical care for people. The purpose of this study was to develop a brief curriculum in dentistry and test its effectiveness, which could improve primary care physicians' knowledge and comfort with dentistry and change their behavior in performing oral exams. Subjects were resident physicians in the departments of Internal Medicine and Family Practice. Curriculum was carefully developed with the involvement of the faculty from several departments of the Ohio State University College of Dentistry and University Medical Center. A questionnaire was created with nine questions to test the comfort levels, behavior and knowledge of dentistry among the residents. The curriculum was presented to the Internal Medicine Residents in a noon conference and to Family Practice Residents in Grand rounds. A total of 33 residents attended these presentations. The residents were asked to fill out the questionnaires before and after the presentations. One-month posttests were collected after a month for which 22 residents responded. The final data was analyzed using ANOVA procedure. Resident's comfort or confidence levels increased significantly in two of the areas and the levels persisted. Dental knowledge increased immediately after the presentation but the residents could not retain it after a month. There is no significant change in their behavior towards their patient's oral health. This kind of one time educational intervention did have a positive effect on the subjects. So an ongoing effort to motivate and educate the physicians in this direction should be implemented to have more successful results.

Poor and minority children are less likely to have access to oral health care than are their nonpoor and nonminority peers. Older adults, people who live in rural areas, and disabled individuals, uniformly confront access barriers, regardless of their financial resources. The consequences of these disparities in access to oral health care can lead to a number of conditions including malnutrition, childhood speech problems, infections, diabetes, heart disease, and premature births. Improving Access to Oral Health Care for Vulnerable and Underserved Populations examines the scope and consequences of inadequate access to oral health services in the United States and recommends ways to combat the economic, structural, geographic, and cultural factors that prevent access to regular, quality care. The report suggests changing funding and reimbursement for dental care; expanding the oral health work force by training doctors, nurses, and other nondental professionals to recognize risk for oral diseases; and revamping regulatory, educational, and administrative practices. It also recommends changes to incorporate oral health care into overall health care.
