Download or read book Communism and Zionism in Palestine written by Jacob Hen-Tov and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1974-01-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the Communist International's involvement in Palestine during the 1920s, this unusual study encompasses the rise of the Zionist settlement in the region, the gradual emergence of Arab nationalism, and the increasing difficulties facing the British mandatory government in reconciling the growing Arab-Jewish strife. The Communist International, searching for revolutionary situations in the underdeveloped world, attempted to use the unrest in Palestine to undermine the British mandatory government. In the process the Communist International and the Palestine Communist Party were confronted by an expanding popular movementâ Zionismâwhich they tried to suppress. The situation was unique. The Palestine Communist Party's leadership and membership were predominantly Jewish, and perceived the Communist International's anti-Zionist policies as a threat to the existence of the entire Jewish community. Hen-Tov made five investigative trips to Russia. He not only reconstructs the situation in the 1920s, but also explains the roots of the strong anti-Israel position taken by the Soviet Union today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Zionism and Technocracy is important reading for anyone seriously interested in the development of the Yishuv during the last decades of Ottoman rule."--Choice "... stimulating and well written... " --Shofar "A pioneering work on the most important aspect of early Zionist history, well researched, well written, highly to be recommended." --Walter Laqueur "Taut and well-written with a fresh approach, Penslar's painstakingly researched study fills an important gap in the literature on the early Yishuv." --The Jerusalem Post Magazine "Penslar has written one of the first 'social histories' of an important aspect of Zionism." --David Sorkin "... Penslar presents an alternative perspective of those early days of Jewish settlement. Instead of a tale of individuals and their efforts, it is history of the organizational efforts to develop the institutions needed to reestablish the Jewish presence on the land." --Midstream The creation of a Jewish homeland in modern Palestine represented a monumental technical achievement. This achievement, and the story of the Jewish technocrats from Central Europe who engineered it, is documented here for the first time--bringing together social, intellectual, and institutional history in a pathbreaking study.
Book Synopsis Early Jewish Settlement Patterns in Palestine, 1882-1914 by : Yossi Ben-Artzi
Download or read book Early Jewish Settlement Patterns in Palestine, 1882-1914 written by Yossi Ben-Artzi and published by Magnes Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish settlement patterns in Palestine are of interest because of their co-operative forms, the Kibbutz and the Moshav. However, the Jews preferred a different type of pioneer settlement: the Moshavah. For over 30 years the early settlers chose the Moshavah as the type of settlement most suited to lead them to their basic goal: creating a Jewish village, and structuring a 'new' Jew -- a farmer who would live on his land and so lay the cornerstone of a renewed 'national home'. The cultural landscape of the Moshavah, its planning its design and development, constitute the subject of this book, which studies the ideological aspirations of Jewish pioneers in Palestine and illustrates the link between ideology and landscape in their settlement patterns.

Book Synopsis The "business" of Settlement by : Yosef Kats
Download or read book The "business" of Settlement written by Yosef Kats and published by Hebrew University Magnes Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work reveals the role, contribution and modus operandi of Zionist private enterprise in the Jewish rural and urban settlement of Palestine between the start of the century and the outbreak of the First World War. The book demonstrates that the role of private enterprise was extensive both in terms of land purchases and in terms of settlement activities. The author recapitulates these efforts, categorizes these activities as unique and identifies the underlying rationale of "national capitalism". The private investors and companies employed economic-commercial means to secure national-Zionist objectives. They were willing to be content with limited profits and received in compensation the emotional gains accruing from their contribution to building the Land of Israel.
Book Synopsis The Claim of Dispossession by : Aryeh L. Avneri
Download or read book The Claim of Dispossession written by Aryeh L. Avneri and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1984 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study sheds new light on the historic background of the contemporary Palestinian problem. Avneri traces the spread of Jewish settlements over the seventy-year period before the establishment of the State of Israel, in order to see how it affected the existing Arab community's economy and social and cultural institutions. He demonstrates that there is no historical evidence for the eviction of the Palestinians from Israel previous to the founding of the state. Most of those who left afterwards did so on their own volition.
