Enough that is permanent may be found to engage the at tention of the most intelligent child during the portion of school days allotted to geography; and, with this basis, he is prepared to read and relish books of voyages, travels history, biography, 66c. 65c. The great, natural features of the globe, its continents, islands, peninsulas, mountains, oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, &c., are all' worthy 'of being learned. The boundaries of the nations, too, though often artificial, are sufficiently permanent to be learned, and so is the locationiof cities and towns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colton's Common School Geography Tee constant and pressing demand for improved text-books on the subject of Geography has led to the preparation of this work. It is designed to afford all the information which the limited time allotted to this department of study in the Common Schools enables the pupils to acquire; and it distributes this information so that every part of the science may receive a proportionate degree of atten tion, the intelligence of the pupil be developed in the highest degree, and the best foundation laid for further acquisition. Every topic is, therefore, briefly treated, so as not to burden the mind of the student with unnecessary details. The general principles of Physical Geography are presented as the ground-work of the whole; the great natural features of each grand division are carefully but briefly sketched, and all local descriptions made to illustrate and exemplify these general statements. The descriptive geograph y of the United States, which, as treated in most books, exhausts the time and patience of the student with its almost endless repetitions, has been presented by sections instead of States, only the few salient features of the latter being given. Areas and populations are introduced m the text, but are stated m round numbers, and according to the latest and most reliable local estimates, the object being, not to impart a knowledge of these facts with minute accuracy, but to give a just idea of the compara tive size of count1ies and cities, and thus prevent the formation of the absurd notions often derived from the study of those text-books that give no information of this kind except 1d statistical tables, which are rarely consulted. The maps have been drawn and engraved specially for this work, and present the most authentic geographical information. They are clear, attractive 1n appearance, and not encumbered with minute details, calculated only to embarrass the learner, except the refer ence maps, which are very full and complete. The illustrations may challenge competition with those of any other work of this kind published, being artistic 1d design and execution, and well calculated to give the most expressive and accurate ideas of the geographical features and localities which they are intended to represent. The large vignette engravings inserted at the head of the grand divisions were designed and executed by one of the best 111 tiste of the country especially for this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Geography for Massachusetts Children In regard to manner, it may be said, that this is a practical book, neither intended to be learned by rote, nor to amuse children, except so far as the acquisition of distinct ideas may give them pleasure; the object being not to give a few unconnected notions, but a regular series of lessons, that will serve as a sure foundation for future progress. The book is intended, in fact, to be an introduction to the Common School Geography, and, like that, contains little or nothing that will not be as true as it is now, when the child has left school and gone forth to use what he has acquired. The time will prob ably never come, to the present generation at least, when the newest edition of either book cannot be used in the same class with the oldest edition, a consideration of some importance in the selection of a school book. Large Outline Maps, similar to those in the book, will soon be prepared by the authors, at a low price; and, as the plan is different from that of other geographies, all the necessary for its use are given as fast as they are needed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common School Geography Lest the diminutive size of this Geography, compared with many others, should induce any one to think that it contains less than it ought, it is necessary to say a few words in explanation. In teaching any science, it is important to separate it as far as possible from every other science: but, inattention to this natural rule has so increased the size of our school geographies, that they have almost ceased to be useful. Thus the author of one popular text-book says, Most authors have extended the subject beyond its proper limits;" and he complains of "the introduction of extraneous matter into geographies," and yet he devotes about one third of his book to astronomy, meteorology, mineralogy, geology, and the statistics of religion, commerce, population, &c. &c. Another popular author tells us that his geography was first published in 1819. After two editions it was stereotyped or permanently fixed. Soon it was necessary to rewrite it entirely. After two editions, it was stereotyped or fixed again, and so, he adds, "it may be expected to remain, till a considerable change shall become desirable." Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Geographies Place of General Geography in this Volume - The most difficult part of common school geography is that deal ing with the motions of the earth, lati tude and longitude, winds, rainfall, ocean currents, and temperature. Yet these subjects are almost universally placed at the beginning of the advanced book, so that their treatment follows immediately upon Primary Geography. This arrangement requires children to move abruptly from a meager study of the simplest facts in geography to its broadest abstractions, which is thor oughly bad and unnecessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Typical School Journeys: A Series of Open-Air Geography and Nature Studies Poor Law Commissioners, Professors of Sociology, and Business Men all combine to urge that something more may be done in the day schools to rouse the children's interest and increase their resourcefulness. The school period is a short one in the lives of working people. Five hours a day on five days a week between the ages of five and thirteen exclusive of holidays do not give the teachers much chance. Hence it is, that alongside of this movement to modify the school curriculum, there are many suggestions for the better use of holidays and leisure time. Reformers urge that the school buildings and parks may be more frequently used for recreation, wisely directed by grown up playfellows, that children should be prepared for their country holidays so that their eyes may be opened to enjoy the beauties and wonders of nature; that holidays of weeks may be substituted for holidays of days, and, generally, that playtime may be made a growing time for both the minds and the bodies of the children. While such theories are being discussed, Mr. Lewis is one of the teachers who has been making experiments in what is possible. In the following pages he tells what he has done both during school and holiday time. It is a pleasure to me to commend his book. I am convinced by what I have seen of children on Hampstead Heath, or in Westminster Abbey, how much may be done in such places to impress the children's minds, and how great need there is that those who conduct the children should prepare themselves to teach.
