Book Synopsis The New Regional Economies by : William R. Barnes
Download or read book The New Regional Economies written by William R. Barnes and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-09-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, we take a nationalist view of our economy. Our politics and economics are wedded in the political economy of the nation state and the nationalist economic policies. This "nationalist paradigm" is, however, showing signs of fatigue: The role of the nation state is diminishing as the economy globalizes; our national accounting systems are less effective, technology forces change; trading blocs are emerging; there is less control of exchange rates; regional economies are restructuring; and competitive environments are changing. This book poses that political jurisdictions are not economies but polities, and explores the complex and important economic implications of this thesis. In reality, metropolitan-centered economic regions are the basic economic units and the building blocks of the U.S. economy. The linked, interdependent system of local economic regions form the U.S. Common Market, which in turn thrives within a global context of mutuality and interdependence. William R. Barnes and Larry C. LedeburÆs paradigm shift from the "nation as the economy" to the "national system of local economic regions" changes the framework in which we think about governance and policy and puts this book at the forefront of U.S. economic thought.
Book Synopsis The European Union's Foreign Economic Policies by : Andreas Dür
Download or read book The European Union's Foreign Economic Policies written by Andreas Dür and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is a key actor in international economic governance. Through its foreign economic policies it plays a central role in the negotiation of international trade agreements, the global regulation of the financial services sector, and the provision of aid to developing countries. This book shows how principal-agent theory can be used to shed new light on this complex of policy areas. In particular, the contributions to this volume analyze delegation, control, and agent strategies in a variety of principal-agent relationships shaping the EU’s foreign economic policies: mainly those involving interest groups and governments; governments and the European Commission; and the European Union and international organizations. The chapters, written by leading experts in the field, offer empirically-rich studies of various areas of the EU’s external economic relations including trade, financial regulation, accounting standards and global regulation through the G7/G8. The book is aimed at researchers and advanced students interested in the EU, international economic relations, and principal-agent theory. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

In selecting distinguished readings for this source book--including contributions by Nobel laureates such as Lawrence R. Klein, Arthur Lewis, James Meade, and Theodore W. Schultz--Professor Letiche breaks the mold. The essays concentrate on interrelation between theory and actual policy design, and this collection of classic pieces and recent economic contributions are a valued resource in universities and government offices.

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this study is the way that finns, industries, and nations organize their relationships with one another in order to engage in international business. To the casual observer, the processes of buying and selling, borrowing and lending, investing and receiving investment returns may seem much the same, whether they occur within a single country or between and among businesses in different political jurisdictions. In fact, however, business contacts between firms or individuals in different coun tries are significantly different from their domestic counterparts. Not only do international buyers and sellers, borrowers and lenders, investors and earnings recipients often use different languages and currencies, they also frequently operate under different basic rules governing contracts, accounting practices, and dispute-settlement arrangements; and they are subject to different tax systems. Most important, they may require explicit pennission, or at least facilitating arrangements, from their respective governments in order to engage in any economic contact whatsoever. It may well be that, as Adam Smith believed, there is "a certain propensity in human nature . . . to truck, barter, and exchange one 1, p. 17); but the fact is that most im thing for another" (1776, vol. portant markets and business relationships do not simply appear and evolve as natural phenomena. In fact, they are created by human effort and are highly organized, and international business relationships are the most highly organized of all.
Book Synopsis International Institutions in Trade and Finance by : A. I. MacBean
Download or read book International Institutions in Trade and Finance written by A. I. MacBean and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this book provided an up-to-date and critical review of the recent history and current status of the main economic institutions affecting international trade and relations at the time. The authors emphasise the economic effectiveness or otherwise of such bodies as GATT, IMF, EEC, UNCTAD and the World Bank, but take account of the political factors present in both the initial ‘design’ and in the way that the institutions have developed. In particular, the book analyses the changed degree of dominance which the USA had been able to exert on the international community.
