Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million copies sold! Essential reading for Catholics of all walks of life. Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In The Five Commandments of Jesus: A New Approach to Christianity, Patrick Amer presents to the ordinary Christian and the theologian alike his new, refreshing, and clear approach to the mission and meaning of Jesus of Nazareth. Amer identifies the five commandments of Jesus as central within the recorded ethical teachings of Jesus. These five commandments show the continued relevance and importance of Jesus in expressing God's will and plan for humankind. The book is clearly written and readily accessible to all readers. Discussion groups across denominations will find that this book meets each reader at the exact point at which we all find ourselves today." Roger Haight, S. J., Union Theological Seminary In this book, Patrick Amer describes his discovery of the five commandments of Jesus. He shows that the commandments are not a random selection of commands. They are an integrated and focused attack on humanity's most deeply embedded anti-social behaviors, those placed there by natural selection. He shows that these behaviors were in ancient times absorbed into humanity's public institutions, and they are still there. The kingdom of God is the community of men and women who live by the five commandments of Jesus, applying them in their personal lives and to public institutions as well. This book examines each commandment to show how it is to be practiced in one's personal life and how it is to be applied to public institutions. By practicing the five commandments of Jesus, the followers of Jesus participate in his redeeming mission and with him save the world.

Book excerpt: In his latest addition to the Pillars of Faith series, Msgr. Peter Vaghi guides readers in an exploration of the choices they make in their daily lives. With simplicity and clarity, he unpacks each of the Ten Commandments using a three-pronged approach: discover how the commandment was understood in the Old Testament, understand how Christ fulfilled the commandment in his life and teaching, and examine the personal and practical implications of each commandment for life today. James Martin, S.J., author of "The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything," hails Vaghis books as firmly grounded in scripture and tradition, well written, clear, orthodox, to the pointand, best of all, wonderfully concise. In "The Commandments We Keep," Vaghi draws from scripture, the "Catechism of the Catholic Church," and the writings of Benedict XVI to help readers understand that Christs purpose was not to replace the commandments, but rather to empower his followers to live them in a new way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God has given us ten simple rules to follow that we may have life and have it more abundantly. From the time He unveiled the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai until now, God's people have been identified by the fact that they follow His commandments. The Ten Commandments are the Christian's code of conduct that separates us from the rest of the world and serves as a barometer of our allegiance to the Creator of the universe. Ten Commandments: The Christian Code of Conduct examines the commandments of God and how they apply to the Christian life. The book also addresses one of the most misunderstood commandments--the fourth commandment and the call to observe the biblical Sabbath. Many Christians differ on their interpretation of this commandment, but through a clear study of the Bible, this book points to the truth of the Sabbath and the importance for Christians to follow all ten commandments. As the end of the world draws near, those who will be ready for Christ's return are "those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Rev. 14:12). May God's followers be found keeping all ten of His commandments!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Handbook to the Catechism, Vol. 2: A Practical Explanation of Catholic Doctrine for School and Pulpit; With Special Regard and Minute Directions for the Catechizing of Children; The Commandments, With Nearly 2, 000 Questions and Answers A person in authority, or superior, is required for a command ment, because a subject can not command. The superior must make his will known. He must reveal it, otherwise the subjects can not know or fulfil it, nor could they be punished for acting against it. God, being the Supreme Lord of heaven and earth, the Lord of lords, His commandments are necessarily the most important. The Catechism puts the question: Is it sufficient for obtaining eternal salvation that we believe all that God has revealed? The answer is: No; we must also keep His commandments. Holy Scripture says: If thou wilt enter into life, keep the command ments (matt. Xix. I7). This question is asked at the very be ginning of this part, because Martin Luther and other heretics have taught that faith alone be sufficient for salvation. The Catholic Church meets this false doctrine with a denial, and says: It is not enough to believe only; our faith must be a living faith; we must live according to our belief, and must prove our faith by worker. He who does not live according to his faith resembles a man who, wishing to travel to a distant place, studies the route, the language, the customs and habits of the countries he must pass through, and yet does not undertake the journey, but remains at home. He can not therefore reach the end intended. That faith alone is not sufficient for salvation we know from the life of our Lord. When the rich young man asked: Lord, what must I do to obtain eternal life? The answer was: If thou wouldst enter into life, keep the commandments. Christ did not say: If thou wouldst enter into life, believe - but He said, Keep the commandments. The Catechism asks further: Are we able to keep the command ments of God?
