Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Clippers IN this book I have attempted to give some account of the beautiful sailing ships which played so great a part in the development of the great British Dominions under the Southern Cross. It is written specially for the officers and seamen of our Mercantile Marine, and I have endeavoured to avoid such a criticism as the following Heaps about other ships, but my old barkey was one of the fastest and best known of them all and he dismisses her with a line or two. I have made rather a point of giving passage records, as they are an everlasting theme of interest when sea men get together and yarn about old ships. The memory is notoriously unreliable where sailing records are concerned, so I have been most careful to check these from logbooks and Captains' reports. Even Lloyd's I have found to be out by a day or two on occasions. A great deal of my material has. Been gathered bit by bit through the past 25 or 30 years. Alas! Many of the old timers, who so kindly lent me abstract logs and wrote me interesting letters, have now passed away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frigate and Clipper, Vol. 1 The American people of today, weighed in the balances of the greatest armed conflict of all time and found not wanting, can afford to survey, in a spirit of candid scrutiny and without reviving an ancient grudge, that turbulent episode in the welding of their nation which is called the War of 1812. In spite of defeats and disappointments this war was, in the large, enduring sense, a victory. It was in this renewed defiance of England that the dream of the founders of the Republic and the ideals of the embattled farmers of Bunker Hill and Saratoga achieved their goal. Henceforth the world was to respect these States, not as so many colonies bitterly wrangling among themselves, but as a sovereign and independent nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Children Reading aloud with taste and expression is only part of the school training. Children must learn to read both to and for themselves; to get the sense by the appeal of the printed page to the eye, as well as of the spoken words to the ear. That children do not acquire this power generally in the primary and grammar schools is known to secondary school teach ers; repeatedly. In my high school classes I have found that reading twenty pages of a comparatively easy history or even of a novel, was a time-taking task without definite results in the way of securing the ideas. Since this power cannot be acquired without years of training, a beginning should be made in the elementary schools. There is no doubt that many of these stories would be most profitable and engrossing seat work, a means of relaxation, which would not involve mischief making. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Colonial Children But after all, what did it matter> There were the loving mother arms, which are better than cradles, if a baby can't have both; and there were the proud and happy papas, each one, of course, thinking his baby whole worlds sweeter than any other baby ever born. And then the aunts and the uncles those two babies had! Every man and woman on board the vessel declared themselves aunt and uncle to these two wonderful new babies; and so anxious were they all to help take care of the little fellows and hold them on their laps, that even had they had the cradles and soft blankets, the babies would have had little time to use them.
