Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of the Chronicles and Ancient Histories of Great Britain, Now Called England After the death of king Charles the Well-beloved the news of it was carried to the duke of Touraine, the Dauphin, his only son, who was then near Le Puy in Auvergne, in a small fort named Espailly, which belongs to the bishop of Le Puy. The Dauphin then, hearing the news of the death of the king his father, was very sad at heart and wept very copiously, and immediately, by the decree of his council, he was clothed in black for the first day, but on the morrow he went to his mass in a scarlet robe; and there were many heralds clothed in coats fashioned with the arms and blasons of their lords and masters. Then there was raised a banner of France within the chapel, and those officers of arms began to cry many times loudly and clearly, "Long live the king." After the cry had ceased, Divine Service began in the church, and no other solemnity was then performed, and from that day forward those adhering to his party began to call him king of France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into' one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, due to the imperative need of compres sion and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young People's History of England The attempt is made, in this volume, to present clearly and concisely the main facts in the history of England, from the Roman Conquest to the present time. The author has especially had it in mind to show the growth of the political liberties and institutions of the English people; and to indicate, in some degree, in the chapters entitled Progress of the People, the changes in the social condition, and the advance in literature and the arts, of the English between one period and another. It has also been his earnest purpose and endeavor to relate events, and to describe persons, without bias or partiality; to avoid obtruding judgments Of his own on these events and persons; and to leave it to the reader to make up his judgment on the many disputed points in English history, from facts which have been accepted as true on all sides. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated History of England I have not hesitated to make Dr. Lingard my principal guide In about a third of the present volume; as in the history anterior to the House of Tudor I did not deem it always necessary to write immediately from the original authorities, though I have frequently consulted them. From the commencement Of the period alluded to, the inquirer after truth must draw from the original sources; for all the modern streams are turbid with re ligious and political prejudices. In it I have tried to tell a clear and simple story, avoid ing technical expressions, and yet passing over no important features of the history that are necessary for the proper under standing of the subject. The narrative is made as continuous as possible, that the reader may follow in unbroken sequence the thread of the story. It is accompanied with a large num ber of newly selected illustrations, and an ample supply of maps and chronological tables. The elaborate bibliographies contained in the larger work have been omitted, and only a brief but selective list of the best books of moderate length has been retained. The' history has been brought down to date ln matters of schcla-fsh'rp as well as chronology, and con tains many opinions and statements not to be found in the larger work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory History of England My own view is that English History should be an inheritance of childhood; that its legends and its romance should grow into our thoughts from very early years, and should expand themselves with the expansion of our minds; that we should feel History and dream of it rather than learn it as a lesson. Happy is that boy who, having so grown up with the story of his country, can people the fields and lanes of his home with the figures of the past; can hear the clatter of Rupert's horsemen down his village street, and can picture the good monks catching baskets-full of trout in the stream (there were more trout in it before the Reformation) wherein he is failing to get a rise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Everyday Things in England, 1066-1799 Now as to why it has been done. In the first place, anything which helps to give us a picture of bygone times must make the history of the period more interesting, and we cannot have a picture without a background to it. It is only fair to our characters in history that we set our stage for them as well as we can; provide them with the proper costumes and setting; give them adequate back ground, against which they can strut and play their part, and make their bow to us before they go.
