Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Book excerpt: A stellar history of English literature from the 5th century to the 19th, introducing the chief writers of each era and the works they are famous for, as well as the relationships that formed among them. The author is a master at capturing the essence of each historical era, showing how that affected the writing that emerged. Two thirds of the text is devoted to England's literature with the remaining third for America's literature. The organizing principle for England's literature is the century, with the century of Chaucer, the century of Shakespeare, the century of the novel, and so on. For America's literature the writers are introduced in groups, such as the transcendentalists, anti-slavery writers, and orators. Illustrations for many of the writers along with numerous short excerpts from their work enliven the text. Recommended for use in conjunction with historical studies to provide a fuller picture of the cultural currents. Includes extensive reference list for both English and American literature for those who want to delve deeper. Suitable for ages 12 and up.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature, 1607-1865 While this volume has been prepared in the main along the lines laid down by its predecessors in the series to which it belongs, it differs from most of them in at least one important particular. A somewhat enlarged scale of treatment has been employed. This was necessi tated by the facts that American literature, so far as concerns not merely the outside world, but the American people themselves, is a creation of the nineteenth cen tury, and that it was impossible to deal satisfactorily with living writers; in other words, with the work of one generation out of three. To have treated so callow a literature on the scale adopted by the' writers of the volumes dealing with the mature and extensive litera tures of F rance and England would have meant the wri ting of an essay, not of a book. I believe that Specializing in any one period is more likely to prove fruitful and of benefit to the student if preceded by a general review of the development of thought and expres sion in the English-speaking peoples. The colonial period of our literature extends from the first permanent settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, to the calling of the Stamp Act Congress in 176 5. It is the period of beginnings, the seedtime, as it were, for the later growth into flower and fruitage during the period of our independent national life. The first business of the colonists was to establish themselves, on the new continent - to clear the forests and build homes, open up farms and pasture lands, construct roads and estab lish means of transportation and communication, overcome the hostile Indian tribes, and organize all the forces for a new religious, social, and economic life. This constructive and formative work naturally consumed the interests and energies of the colonists so largely that little time was left for the development of literature. Moreover, there was no unity of government or of purpose in the earlier part of the colonial period. Different European nations had established colonies on the new continent, and a struggle for supremacy inevitably followed. The history of the colonial period gives us the details of this struggle for supremacy, a struggle which, after narrowing down to a fierce conflict between France and England was'finally settled in England's favor by the Treaty of Paris in 176 3. Tendencies toward union. Naturally during the latter part of this struggle the English colonies were drawn into a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature IN this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently ex tended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have con densed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of Whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of main taining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An ap pendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time per mits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, A History of American Lite rature, 1607 - 1865 (1903, Appleton). Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Modern English Literature The great pressure upon space has been relieved by dividing the history of English literature into two por tions. If this series continues to receive the support of the public, it is hoped that a volume on the archaic section may bring the story down from the earliest times to Robert of Brunne and Laurence Minot. In my first three chapters I have further lightened my labour by leaving out of consideration what was written in this country in Latin or French, for, although this may be material in dealing with thought in England, it can have but a small connection with the history of expression in the English language. I make no apology for the prominence given throughout to the art of poetry, for it is in verse that style can most definitely and to greatest advantage be studied, especially in a literature like ours, where prose has mainly been written without any other aim than the naive transference of ideas or statement of facts, like the prose of M. Jourdain, while our national poetry, which is one of our main national glories, has been a consecutive chain of consciously elaborated masterpieces. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the English From an American Point of View What will you have for breakfast, if, alas, you will have any breakfast the first morning out? Something very light perhaps. These islanders, you soon find, have little regard for lightness. A light dish of eggs in some form, a light roll, fresh butter, coffee and hot milk? Yes, of a sort, but none of them light. You soon forswear coffee for tea, and ere long the passive bulwark of resistance wearies you into eggs and bacon, and cold meat, and jams, for your first meal of the day. Little things are typical. What you want is not refused you, but what they have and like is gradually forced upon you. Thus they govern their colonies. No raising of voices, no useless and prolonged discussion, no heat gen crated, no ridicule of your habits, or eulogy of their own, none of these, but just slow-moving, unchanging, confident bulk! Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the American People Miss turpin's Short History of the American People has impressed me as a work of exceptional value. The narrative is clear, impartial, spirited, and altogether read able. The prime merit of the work is, in my opinion, that events are made so to unfold that even a child will grasp the principle of cause and effect as it has worked itself out in the history of our country. This volume is not a series of detached dates and incidents, however picturesque or pleasingly told. The process of growth is brought out in every paragraph in such a way as to make the sequence of events illumining. By such treatment the reader is eu abled to contract the historical habit. As the habit of sound thinking is more than a thousand thoughts, so the historical habit of interpreting cause and effect in human experience is of far more value than any knowledge of events, however comprehensive. The author has preserved the due perspective of Ameri can history by giving a large place to the facts bearing on the industrial and social development of our people, in accordance with the changing sphere of the modern State, which is becoming more and more social both in its spirit and aims. The style is simple and yet energetic, while the appara tus for teaching, such as maps, topics for study, references for reading, and suggestive questions, are admirable.
