The eight sections that constitute this volume are composed largely of messages that were given during the summer training held in Los Angeles and Altadena, California, from July 13 through August 22. The training covered four main areas: life, truth, the church, and service. The messages on life and on truth were given in the evening of each Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday, and the messages on the church and on service were given in the evening of each Thursday. The messages given in the evening focused on these four main areas, and the messages given in the morning were devoted to fellowship concerning personal problems, spiritual problems, the church, the local churches, the Lord's Day gathering, practical service, prayer, and Christian practices. The contents of this volume are as follows: 1. Eighteen messages concerning life given on July 13 through August 20 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles of the Experience of Life. One message, chapter 9, is included also in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1965, volume 3, as chapter 8 of Our Human Spirit. 2. The five messages on truth given on July 13 through 22 as part of the summer training. Four of these messages have been published previously under the title The Building of God. However, in researching for The Collected Works, a fifth message was discovered. 3. Six messages on service given on July 18 through August 22 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles for the Service in theChurch Life. Chapters 1 through 3 are included also in The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1969, volume 1, as chapters 6 through 8 of To Serve in the Human Spirit. 4. Six messages on the church given on July 18 through August 22 as part of the summer training. These messages have been published under the title Basic Principles for the Practice of the Church Life. 5. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brother Witness Lee traveled to Manila, Philippines, at the beginning of 1954. On January 24 he began a seven-day perfecting conference with five special fellowships concerning the subject of pursuing the Lord. After this, he initiated a service training that lasted for six months, with four meetings per week. On Wednesday mornings he gave a Bible study of the Old Testament, and on Wednesday evenings he gave a training on character, including matters such as being the proper person, handling affairs properly, and doing the proper work. On Friday mornings he gave a training on being a minister of God's word, and on Friday evenings he ministered on the proper way to meet. The number who attended these meetings varied between fifty-six and one hundred sixty. The study of the Old Testament and the training on character are included in volume 1 of the 1954 set, along with other messages given in the same time period. Brother Lee left Manila in July and traveled to Hong Kong, where he conducted ten meetings on life and twelve meetings on service, plus four gospel meetings, four young people's meetings, six fellowships on service, and six meetings for the full-time serving ones. These meetings were centered on the indwelling Christ and on the knowledge of spiritual service. They are included in volumes 1 and 2 of this set. Brother Lee left Hong Kong to return to Taiwan in the middle of August. At the end of August and the beginning of September, Brother Lee conducted a special conference in Taipei, Taiwan, that consisted of ten meetings on the subject of spiritual reality, with between one thousand six hundred and two thousand six hundred in attendance. These messages are included in the section entitled Spiritual Reality in volume 2 of this set. In the fall of 1954 Brother Lee began another extended training for serving ones like the one that he carried out in the fall of 1953. During this training he conducted a detailed study on Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus through Ezra. The messages given in this detailed study are included in volume 4 of this set. He also spoke further on the knowledge of life and the experience of life. These speakings and the speakings in the previous training in 1953 on the same subjects were combined to form the books The Knowledge of Life and The Experience of Life (see The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1953, vol. 3). During this training he also released messages published in Gospel Outlines, which are included in volume 3 of this set. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1954, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee on January 1 through August 12, 1954. Historical information concerning Brother Lee's travels and the content of his ministry in 1954 can be found in the general preface that appears at the beginning of this volume. The first period is the three months from January through March, during which Brother Lee was in Manila, Philippines, in January and returned to Taipei, Taiwan, via Hong Kong in February. He then conducted three conferences and a few co-workers' meetings in March. The second period consists of the next six months, from the beginning of April through mid October. During this period Brother Lee traveled around the world, passing through Tokyo, Osaka, and Shenyu in Japan (April 8 through 22); Honolulu, San Francisco, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Toronto in the United States and Canada (April 23 through August 1); London, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Zurich, Geneva, Rome, and Athens in Europe (August 2 through September 21); Beirut, Jerusalem, and Tehran in the Middle East (September 22 through 28); Karachi, Rangoon (now Yangon), and Bangkok in South and Southeast Asia (September 29 through October 3); and Hong Kong (October 4 through 15) before returning to Taiwan on October 16. The third period consists of the last three months in Taiwan, during which time he conducted various conferences. For the first period we have records of Brother Lee's meeting with district responsible ones in Hong Kong on February 12. The three conferences that Brother Lee conducted in Taiwan in March were on the subject of enjoying God. This is the first time that Brother Lee released the light concerning this subject. In addition to the three conferences, Brother Lee conducted a number of meetings with serving ones on March 4 through 8. He also gave a series of messages on reading the Bible and another series of messages on the vision of the tree of life. The messages given during this period are included in volume 1 of this set. For the second period we have records of Brother Lee's speaking in Tokyo in April in a conference on enjoying God and records of a few private talks. There are two records of his speaking in New York and four records of his speaking in Denmark. In addition, he wrote long letters that reveal some of the meetings that took place during his trip. These letters are published in Church News in volume 1 of this set. After his visits to the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, he returned to Hong Kong in October. There he held two weeks of conferences on God's building. In the third period, upon returning to Taiwan in October, Brother Lee conducted a conference on God's building, with meetings in both the morning and the evening. In addition, he conducted various meetings with serving ones. After the conference, on Mondays and Wednesdays he gave additional messages on the subject of God's building. Almost all the messages given in the second and third periods of 1958 are included in volume 2 of this set. Some of his speaking in October and November is included in volume 1 in the section entitled The Perfecting of the Saints and the Building Up of the House of God. Twelve messages given in Hong Kong on July 17 through 28. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Center of God's Salvation and the Living Out of God. 3. Twelve messages given in Hong Kong on July 19 through 31. These messages are included in this volume under the title Working with God in the Body of Christ. 4. Five messages given in Hong Kong on July 29 through August 9. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Proper Knowledge and Learning of the Lord's Serving Ones. 5. Three messages given in Hong Kong on August 2 through 5. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Calling, Consecration, and Growth of the Young People. 6. Three messages given in Hong Kong on August 2 through 4. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Vanity of Human Life and the Way of Salvation. 7. Four messages given in Hong Kong in July and August. These messages are included in this volume under the title Records of a Few Talks in Hong Kong. 8. Eighteen messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, in August and September. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Spiritual Reality. They are included in this volume under the same title.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1963, volume 1, contains the messages and fellowship given by Brother Witness Lee from January 2 through March 31, 1963. Two additional messages included in this volume were given on December 4 and 13, 1962. Most of Brother Lee's time during the months of January and February was spent in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. During this time he gave conferences in the Los Angeles area. His first trip outside the Los Angeles area in 1963 was to Sacramento, California, on February 25. After ministering there for several days, Brother Lee returned to Los Angeles for about a week. Beginning on March 8 he spoke in a conference in New York City on four consecutive weekends until the end of the month. The contents of this volume are divided into eleven sections, as follows: 1. Seven messages given in Whittier, California, on January 2 through 8. These messages have been published under the title The Believer's Experience of Transformation. 2. Thirteen messages given in Los Angeles and previously published under the title Spiritual Applications of the Tabernacle. Messages 1 and 2 were given on December 4 and 13, 1962, and the remainder of the messages were given over the period from January 12 through February 7, 1963. Messages 12 and 13 were combined to form the final chapter. 3. Two messages given in Los Angeles on January 15 and 17. These messages are included in this volume under the title Prayer on the Ground of Christ's Ascension. 4. Two messages given in Los Angeles on January 19. These messages have been combined and published under the title The Divine Stream. 5. A series of three messages given in Los Angeles on February 3 and 10. These messages are included in this volume under the title The Key to Our Experience of Transformation--Knowing the InwardParts of Man. 6. Four messages given in Los Angeles on February 5 through 10. These messages are included in this volume under the title Highlights from the Gospel of John. The first two chapters were constructed from personal notes taken by brothers who were present in the meetings. 7. Six messages given during a conference in Reseda and Los Angeles, California, on February 12 through 17. These messages have been published under the title The Practical Way to Live in the Mingling of God with Man. No record exists for the third message. 8. Four messages given at a conference in Sacramento on February 25 through 28. These messages have been published under the title The Enjoyment of Christ for His Increase. 9. Ten messages constructed from personal notes of talks that Brother Lee gave to the leading ones during the period from January 18 through March 3 in the greater Los Angeles area. These messages are included in this volume under the title Various Times of Fellowship with the Leading Ones in Los Angeles. 10. Twelve messages given during a conference in New York City on March 8 through 31. These messages have been published under the title Experiencing the Mingling of God with Man for the Oneness of the Body of Christ. 11. One message given in New York City in March; the exact date is uncertain. This message was spoken in Chinese and translated simultaneously into English. The English translation is the basis for the English edition, included in this volume under the title The Two Spirits in the Gospel of John.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1988, volume 1, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from January 3 through December 18, 1988. In 1988 Brother Lee spoke fifty-six messages that were published in the Life-study of Leviticus. These Life-study messages are not included in The Collected Works of Witness Lee. Brother Lee remained in Irving, Texas, during the first part of January 1988. He returned to Anaheim, California, in the middle of January and again traveled to Irving in February, where he remained until the first part of March. From then until the third week in March he visited Seattle, Washington; Vancouver, Canada; and Berkeley and San Jose, California. In the last week of March Brother Lee visited Spokane, Washington, and San Francisco, California, before he returned to Anaheim. In the first few days of April he visited San Jose for two days, and in the second week of April he flew to Taipei, Taiwan, and remained there until early June. He returned to Anaheim and remained there through the third week of July. In the remaining days of July he visited a number of cities in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Berkeley, Hayward, San Jose, Los Altos, and San Francisco, California. In early August he visited Spokane, and at the end of August he visited Seattle. In the last few days of August he visited Alhambra, California, and in September he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, and Atlanta, Georgia. In early October Brother Lee visited Taipei for one month before traveling to Seoul, South Korea, and then back to Taipei, where he remained until the middle of November. He then returned to Anaheim and remained there until the middle of December. During his time in Anaheim he also ministered in Pasadena, San Gabriel, and Monterey Park, California. In mid-December he traveled to Irving and remained there through the early days of January 1989. The contents of this volume are divided into fourteen sections, as follows: 1. A message given in Irving, Texas, on January 3, 1988. This message is included in this volume under the title The New Way for the Lord's Recovery. 2. Six messages given in Chinese in Anaheim, California, on January 15 through 31. These messages were previously published in Chinese and English in a book entitled The Proper Way for Believers to Meet and to Serve and are included in this volume under the same title. 3. Four messages given in Anaheim, California, on January 21 through July 19. These messages are included in this volume under the title Fellowship with the Full-time Serving Ones concerning the Lord's Present Move. 4. Two messages given in Anaheim, California, on January 30 and October 1. They are included in this volume under the title Serving the Lord in His New Way to Raise Up Local Churches. 5. Twelve messages given in Irving, Texas, on February 22 through March 5. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Speaking Christ for the Building Up of the Body of Christ and are included in this volume under the same title. 6. Thirteen messages given in Irving, Texas, on February 22 through March 5. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Living in and with the Divine Trinity and are included in this volume under the same title. 7. Three messages given in Irving, Texas, on March 7 and December 16 and 18. These messages are included in this volume under the title Fellowship with the Full-time Trainees in Irving, Texas. 8. Three messages given in Seattle, Washington, on March 11 through 13. They are included in this volume under the title Practicing the Scriptural Way of Meeting in Mutuality for the Growth and Building Up of the Body of Christ and Holding to the Teaching of the Apostles as the Leadership in the New Testament. 9. Eight messages given in Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, Canada, on March 11 through 16. These messages are included in this volume under the title Being Perfected for the Building Up of the Body of Christ through the Practice of the New Way. 10. Seven messages given in Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, Canada, on March 13 through 16.
