S: Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge; Fullerian Professor of Physiology at the Royal Institution; Professor of Comparative Anatomy in King's College, London; Professor of the Zoological Society of London In consequence of a very generally expressed wish amongst the personal friends of the late Professor A. H. Garrod, to possess some permanent memorial of him, it was decided, at a meeting of the Zoological Club held on May 4th, 1880, to appoint a Committee to consider the best means of carrying this idea into execution. As ultimately constituted, this Committee consisted of Professors Flower, Schafer, Bell; Messrs. Sclater, Salvin, Balfour, Dobson, the late Mr. Alston, Dr. Gunther, and myself, I agreeing to act as secretary to it. After carefully considering the various forms that the proposed memorial might take, it was decided that the most appropriate and desirable one would be the publication, in a collected form, of all the papers published by Garrod in various scientific journals and periodicals, with a portrait and memoir of the author. The list of subscribers to the present volume, including, as it does, the names of nearly all the leading English biologists as well as those of numerous private friends, shows that this decision of the Committee has been amply justified by the result. The work of arranging and editing the papers in the present volume has in the main fallen on myself, though Professor E. A. Schafer was kind enough to read through the proofs of the physiological part. As far as possible, the papers in each part have been kept in the order in which they were published: in a few cases, however, when several papers treating of the same or closely-allied subjects appeared at different periods, they have, where it seemed desirable, been placed together. The last paper in the volume, as explained in the biographical memoir, has not been published before anywhere. Misprints and other clerical errors of the original have been corrected in this reprint, and in a few cases, where it seemed advisable, foot-notes have been added by myself.
