Book excerpt: The Clumber Spaniel is a breed of dog, within the spaniel typing, that originates from the United Kingdom. The breed's name is derived from 'Clumber Park' which is located in Nottinghamshire and is where the breed was first developed. The Clumber Spaniel is actually the largest breed of dog within the spaniel typing. The breed was originally developed as a gundog that specializes in hunting in areas of heavy coverage. There are two different theories about the breed heritage. The first theory suggests that the Clumber Spaniel was developed by breeding the now extinct Alpine Spaniel with Basset Hounds and Pyrenean Mountain dogs. The second theory suggests that the Clumber Spaniel was developed by breeding King Charles Spaniels with other gundog breeds - the King Charles Spaniel was originally much larger than it is in modern times. The breed was originally restricted to being bred by nobility, but during World War 1 the Clumber Spaniel's numbers dwindle which lead to kennels taking an interest in preserving the breed. Despite the efforts to increase the breed's numbers, the Clumber Spaniel is still considered a vulnerable breed in the UK - which means that under 300 new Clumber Spaniel are registered each year. The Clumber Spaniel has a large heavy bone structure, a large head, large vine-leaf shaped ears and a freckled muzzle. The breed predominantly has a white, lemon, orange or brown coat colorations and there are normally spots of other common coat colorations around their muzzle and body. The Clumber Spaniel has a dense coat with the top half being short and the bottom half being a lot longer. As a whole the Clumber Spaniel is known to be a gentle, loyal and affectionate breed. They are also known to be a very 'sleepy' breed and spend a lot of time relaxing, eating or sleeping. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Clumber Spaniel's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. This guide will give an in-depth explanation on training your Clumber Spaniel, raising your Clumber Spaniel from a puppy, grooming, health care and everything in between! "The Clumber Spaniel: A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide to: Buying, Owning, Health, Grooming, Training, Obedience, Understanding and Caring for Your Clumber Spaniel," by Michael Stonewood is the perfect purchase or gift for a first time Clumber Spaniel owner. Book excerpt: The name 'Cocker Spaniel' belongs to two breeds of spaniel type dogs: the 'American Cocker Spaniel' and the 'English Cocker Spaniel, ' both of which are commonly simply called the Cocker Spaniel in their respective countries of origin. The Cocker Spaniel was originally developed to be a hunting dog in the United Kingdom and the 'Cocker' portion of their name is in reference to the Eurasian woodcock which was their main prey. The breed was then transported to the United States of America were the breed went through development to enable it to hunt American woodcocks more efficiently. There are now multiple physical differences between the 'American Cocker Spaniel' and the 'English Cocker Spaniel.' Both types of Cocker Spaniel use their sense of smell to allow them to hunt and flush out their prey for their handlers to shoot. Once the bird is downed the Cocker Spaniel will retrieve it in its mouth, which has been developed to be soft for the purpose of not damaging the prey. The breed's coat comes in multiple different potential colorations but it will most commonly come in black, liver, red or solid golden. As a whole the Cocker Spaniel is known to be a very affectionate and sweet natured breed. They are perfectly suited to life as a household pet as they are playful, gentle and enjoy spending time exercising with their family unit. The breed is known to be 'soft' natured which means that they do not come well with harsh treatment. It is therefore imperative to treat your Cocker Spaniel with a gentle and calm tone at all times during its training. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. This book was released on 2019-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog that is a member of the Spaniel typing. During the early 19th century the Field Spaniel was originally developed to be a show breed by competitors who were attempting to create an all-black Spaniel. The breed's original coloration and shape made them incredibly unpopular with sportsmen due to the fact that the Field Spaniel's dark coat made it hard to spot during hunting conditions. The Field Spaniel's elongated shape and small legs also made the breed inadequate at traversing through cover and forests. During the mid-20th century the Field Spaniel was redeveloped as a longer-legged dog that was much more suitable for working purposes - most specifically field work. The newly developed Field Spaniel is considered to be the father of the modern and extremely popular English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel. However, despite being the forefather of two of the most popular breeds worldwide, the Field Spaniel is a rare breed of dog that is actually considered to be a 'vulnerable breed' in the United Kingdom due to their dwindling numbers. The Field Spaniel has the darkest coat of all the breeds within the Spaniel typing. The Field Spaniel also has no undercoat unlike most of the other working type of Spaniels. The Field Spaniel's coat most commonly comes in solid colors but it is not uncommon for there to be occasional markings on the breed's chest. In modern times the Field Spaniel is mainly found as a household family pet. Due to their working and show history, the Field Spaniel can become bored very easily and without some form of purpose it is not uncommon for a Field Spaniel to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom. They make perfect family pets due to their docile, friendly and loving nature. The Field Spaniel is also very good around strangers, small children and other animals, providing that it has been properly socialized during its puppyhood. The Field Spaniel is also known to be highly less excitable than the English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel, which makes it a better choice for families with small children. Book excerpt: The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog that is a member of the Spaniel grouping. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Swamp Poodle, ' the 'LBD' (Little Brown Dog) and simply as the 'Boykin.' The Boykin Spaniel originates from the United States of America. The breed was originally developed for the purpose of hunting turkeys and ducks in the Wateree River Swamp located in South Carolina. However due to their stamina in hot weather and eagerness to hunt, the Boykin Spaniel was quickly used for dove hunts and to hunt pheasants and other larger game. The Boykin Spaniel is actually the state dog of South Carolina. The Boykin Spaniel is slightly larger than the English Cocker Spaniel but has a much heavier body. The breed has no standard coat type or coloration due to the breed recent background. It is not uncommon for the Boykin Spaniel's coat to be curly in a similar style to the American Water Spaniel's coat, fine and straight like a Field Spaniel's coat and shorter and straighter like a Labrador Retriever's coat. As a whole, the Boykin Spaniel is known to be a friendly, sociable and loyal breed that makes it a perfect family pet. It is important to note that the Boykin Spaniel is a highly energetic breed. If it is not exercised properly it is highly likely that a Boykin Spaniel will develop destructive behaviors, due to boredom and having an abundance of excess energy. Book excerpt: The American Water Spaniel (often abbreviated to AWS), is a breed of Spaniel that originates from the United States of America. The breed was developed in the state of Wisconsin during the 19th century by cross breeding the Irish and English Water Spaniels. Despite being the state dog of Wisconsin, they are actually a relatively rare breed of dog - there are thought to only be around 3,000 in existence! The American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized dog that has a double layered coat. The breed coat comes in a wide variety of colorations that are based in browns. The breed is an excellent and versatile hunting dog that performs well on land and in water. The breeds double layered coat is also water resistant, which allows the American Water Spaniel to hunt throughout the year. The breed was traditionally used to hunt small game, such as ducks and other birds. However in modern times, the American Water Spaniel is mainly kept as a companion dog that is perfect for apartment living due to their quiet, loyal, affectionate and obedient temperament. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Book excerpt: The Collie is a breed of dog that originates from Scotland, primarily from the Highland regions. The breed's name has two potential points of origin. Some historians believe that the name 'Collie' is based upon the Anglo-Saxon word 'coll' which means black. Other historians believe that the breeds name is based upon the Scottish black-faced sheep named 'Colley, ' as the Collie was used to guard these sheep on a regular basis. However most historians agree that the Collie is probably descended from breeds of dog introduced to the United Kingdom by Roman conquerors almost two thousand years ago! Traditionally the Collie was predominately black coated and was much closer in size and shape to today's Border Collie. The breed traditionally had no standardized appearance due to it being bred for intelligence, herding and working ability rather than looks. The breed was widely employed as a herding dog and was known to herd, and guard, cattle, pigs, sheep and goats on a regular basis. In the 1860's Queen Victoria of England fell in love with the good natured temperament and appearance of the Collie and introduced them into English culture, where the breed was known as the 'Scottish Sheep-Dog.' The Collie comes in two potential coat variants: rough and smooth. The rough coated variant has a long, abundant and straight outer coat that is rough to the touch and a soft, thick and furry undercoat. The smooth coat variant has a shorter, dense and flat outercoat and a thick undercoat. The breed's coat comes in four colors: tricolor (black with white and tan markings), white, blue merle (silvery blue and black) and sable (which is commonly known as the 'Lassie' coat coloration). As a whole the breed is known to be incredibly good natured, affectionate and gentle. The Collie thrives in a household environment and enjoys spending time with its family unit. The Collie is also incredibly good around children as they are both protective and playful. The Collie is highly intelligent and is known to be willing to risk its own wellbeing to protect members of its family. The breed's personality and elegant appearance have kept the Cocker Spaniel in the top ten breeds in the United States for decades, and today new owners are discovering the many charms of this apartment-size dog. Author and sporting breed expert Richard G. Beauchamp describes his much-loved breed of which is he is a former breeder and handler: "Under the obvious wealth of furnishings, a well-bred Cocker Spaniel remains a most versatile companion. He is small enough to make a pleasant house dog, yet of more than sufficient size and stamina to spend the day trudging alongside his master over hill and dale." This Comprehensive Owners' Guide retells the breed's origins and characteristics as well as discusses the breed standard and offers new owners advice about selection, care, training, showing, and more.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. It is one of the four regional breeds of Sennenhunde-type dogs that originate from the Swiss Alps. The name 'Sennenhunde' comes from the Swiss word 'Senn' which refers to the herders from the Appenzell region in Switzerland. The breed was originally developed to be both a cattle herding dog and a flock guardian. The breed is extremely loyal and has been to known to give their own lives to protect their herd! In modern times they are mainly employed as an all-purpose farm dog or simply kept as a very loving and loyal companion dog. The breed has a heavy and athletic build and a distinctive tri-colored coat. They have small triangular ears which are set high on the face. The breed has a thick, shiny topcoat and a long and thick undercoat. The breed is easy to groom but sheds profusely. It is important to note that while Appenzeller Sennenhunde are very affectionate towards humans, they have been known to nip at small children to 'herd' them. The breed is thought to be a mixture of the Barbet and the Beauceron. The Briard was only standardized after a dog show, in Paris, in the late 1800s. Traditionally the Briard was bred and developed to both guard and herd flocks of sheep without the presence of the farmer. Most sheepdogs either herd or guard flocks. Breeds that herd normally have small, compact and agile builds to allow them to efficiently, and quickly, herd sheep. Guard dogs normally have larger, heavier and more athletic builds to allow them to adequately defend the flocks of sheep. The Briard is a mixture of both a herding and guarding dog: it has a compact and athletic body while not being small. The Briard is also known to be highly intelligent and was more than capable of minding a flock of sheep alone. The French military employed the Briard was a sentry, messenger and a search and rescue dog during World War 1. The Briard was actually used to such an extent that the breed nearly went extinct! In modern times the Briard is still used as a military dog, a police dog, a search and rescue dog and as a domesticated companion dog. The Briard has a characteristic coarse, long and shaggy overcoat and fine and dense undercoat that sits tightly to the dog's stomach. As a whole, the breed is known to be extremely intelligent, empathetic, loyal and loving. They have been a popular choice for family pets and therapy dogs due to their kind natures. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. Book excerpt: The Chinook is a rare breed of sled dog that originates from the United States of America. The breed was developed in the state of New Hampshire in the early 20th century and is not the official state dog. The breed was developed by a single man named Arthur Treadwell Walden in 1917 and the entire breed's lineage can be traced to a single male dog named 'Chinook' - hence the breed's name. The breed's father, 'Chinook, ' was a mix of a husky and a tawny Mastiff-like male which lead him to have a large broad Mastiff-like head with dropped ears and the athletic build of a husky. 'Chinook' was bred with Belgian Shepherd dogs, Canadian Eskimo dogs and German Shepherds to create the Chinook breed. The breeding pool for Chinooks dwindled during the second World War and was as small as 11 by the mid-1980s but due to groups of enthusiasts the breed managed to survive. The breed was traditionally used as a working sled dog but is now more commonly found as a house hold family pet. As a whole the breed is incredibly affectionate and playful especially towards children. It is also an intelligent breed that is eager to learn and please its owners. Despite the breed not being known to show aggression it is still important to make sure that you Chinook is properly socialized with children, strangers and other animals during its puppyhood. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet.
